Lyrics for Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me as interpreted by xpankfrisst

Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me Lyrics
You don't know how you took it
You just know what you got
Oh Lordy you've been stealing from the thieves
And you got caught in the headlights of a stretch car
You're a star

Dressing like your sister
Living like a tart
They don't know what you're doing
Babe, it must be art!
You're a headache in a suitcase
You're a star

Oh no, don't be shy
You don't have to go blind
Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me

You don't know how you got here
You just know you want out
Believing in yourself almost as much as you doubt
You're a big smash
You wear it like a rash...star

Oh no, don't be shy
It takes a crowd to cry
Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me

They want you to be Jesus
They'll go down on one knee
But they'll want their money back if you're alive at 33
And you're turning tricks with your crucifix
You're a star (Oh child)

Of course you're not shy
You don't have to deny love
Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me
(orgasms to fade)

this song rules! originally bono was going to play The Riddler in the film 'batman forever' (did not sound a bad idea at the time to anyone else?) but eventually jim carrey was cast so bono wrote this for the soundtrack. u2s best song by far. anyways, that's what i think...

Good song. I can't believe no one added this song before now...... I had the soundtrack and it was my favorite song on the tape. Heh, the tape. That sounds so funny to say. I guess that's how the older generation feels about with the 8-Track.

Lyrically, it's pretty good. Musically, it's even better. I enjoy this song, without having to enjoy everything U2 does.

I have heard that this song talks about boybands and I think this opinion is right. Some boybands are too farfetched

its literal i think. its just about being in showbuisness and having to keep up appearances. "they'll want their money back if your alive at 33"
anyway if you think this is their best song then you are not a true U2 fan. if you like this song then buy "achtung baby" their 1991 album and my favourite.

Joeytheboy, i just want to point out, "they'll want their money back if your alive at 33". This verse is saying that other people think u are jesus and jesus died at 33. if you are still alive at 33, it means your not jesus and they want your money back... understand?

doesn't matter if ya dont... i dont really myself...HA!

I think Joeyboy is right, its about showbusiness, mostly the music industry, its kind of talking about the David Bowie and Marilyn Manson syndrome (don't bother to point out that manson came after this song, im just using him because he is a good example) where when you are doing something different and pushing the envelope you are regarded as an artist and a genius even if you are pure shite, simply because no one has a clue what you are about. The jesus reference is not actually about Jesus but about someone being over hyped, and how people always flock around the next big thing like they are the new messiah, but then unless you go out with a bang (literally, in the case of Kurt Cobain) everyone will get bored of you and move on.

This is probably a little too far-fetched,but could this song be about a priest? That's the meaning my brain unlocked, for some reason. 'You don't have to go blind',a reference to masturbation, 'Believing in yourself almost as much as you doubt ,You're a big smash','turning tricks with your crucifix'...
Not to mention 'dressing like your sister'.

I really love this song! Although it was recorded a few years after Achtung Baby it has the same sort of vibe as some of the songs on that album (which in my view is the best one), and I seem to remember thinking it was a welcome to that style after the less impressive Zooropa.
On the video there is a refference of Bono reading "The Screwtape Letters" by CS Lewis, Bono took from there his character of Mr MacPhisto, may be the song also deals with the band's (or Bono's) struggle of being superstars and all the weight it carries on. The line "they'll want their money back if you're alive at 33 " is as someone said above a reference to how fans will shun you if you fail to please or live up to there expectations. If they find out that you're not what they thought you were they'll leave you.
The cry "Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me, Kill me" could be a reference to the fans cries to the band, demanding them to entertain and provoke feelings of warmth (hold me), excitement (thrill me), love (kiss me) and and pain (kill me) through the songs. It could also be a reference to the changing attitudes of the band towards fame, in that sometimes they want the love, adoration and buzz of the fans (the holding, thrilling and kissing bit) and sometimes they just want it to stop (the killing bit).
All in all a really good song. Its not as good as "The Fly" though.
Oh and i really like how it says "orgasms to fade" at the bottom of the lyrics. Classy!

i think its about how people idolize stars so much (like jesus), and stars can get away with anything weird or inappropriate because it "must be art!" and "turning tricks with your crucifix" refers to somethink akin to prostitution--turning tricks is an old sexual term--while seeming innocient and godly. but actually it's a confusing life in showbiz, you've always got to be what people want to see. "you're a big smash" once you get "old" (at 33 bono supposes) people don't want to see you anymore cause you're out of style.

I agree with the 'showbiz' theory to the song. Basically the 'you' in this song is a celebrity in the prime of their career. Imagine a britney spears (barf) or maybe a Jim Carrey. Just think of when those two were really hot and always in the limelight.
"you're a star" you made it and you don't know exactly how or why, but 'you' are questioning the entire idea of fame. 'you' don't like it anymore.
So Bono is like this, guardian angel/devil on you're shoulder talking to 'you' trying to make you keep buying into this celebrity life.

At least, well, i see it this way.

I agree with DiscoFrank, it is about Batman. But its a god song, and the opening guitar just gets in the mood for a song thats "something else". A brilliant movie soundtrack.
