Lives opened and trashed
Look, ma, watch me crash
No time to question
Why'd nothing last
Grasp and hold on
Hold tight and fast
Soon be over
And I will relent

Let the ocean swell, dissolve 'way my past
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't even know I've left

Under your tongue
I'm like a tab
I will give you what
You're not s'posed to have
Under my breath
I swear by sin
For better or for worse
A best we begin

Let the sun climb, oh, burn 'way my mask
Three days, and maybe longer
Shed my skin at last
Shed, shed

Let the sun shine, burn 'way my mask
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't ever find me here

Let the ocean dissolve 'way my past
Four days, and not much longer

Let my spirit pass
This is, this is
This is, this is
This is, this is
My
Last exit

General Comment:For me this song is about suicide,
"let my spirit pass, this is, this is, MY LAST EXIT"
Someone can´t handle the pain of life anymore and just wants do die, at least in my opinion!

General Comment:I would agree it's about suicide. But I think the key to appreciating the song is understanding the motivation behind taking one's life in this particular piece.

    Read the following lines:

Lives opened and trashed, look MA watch me crash
    Why'd nothing last
Soon be over and I will relent
    Won't even know I've left
    For better or for worse
    Won't ever find me here

In this case it's about thoughts of suicide driven by divorce IMHO

General Comment:It sounds like suicide. I don't know about the kurt cobain thing, though it was at that time so maybe it was used as inspiration?

General Comment:One of my favorite cuts off Vitalogy, while death clearly could be one way to look at it, i prefer to think this is another song about ed's affinity with the ocean and surfing, relating it to taking a drug, and going so long that the sun completly dissolves his sunscreen, peeling his face, but its still not long enough

General Comment:This song is indeed about death and not Kurt's. Death is not th eend it's a rebirth. You go to the light and are then reborn. Welcome to immortalitly! Last Exit means he doesn't want to be reborn again, he's tired of living.

There are many similar references to this in PJ songs as well as bands like Led Zeppelin.

General Comment:the only reason this song isnt about kurts suicide is because he was murdered, so it couldnt be about his suicide because it never happened
