The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."

taking my own experiences into consideration i think this song is about a really shitty ex-bf. "you look like shit, whats yer problem bitch? yer legs feel like sandpaper, you can't do anything right." maybe those words weren't exactly spoken to her, but i think that whomever treated her like this might as well have said this hurtful stuff. and in the end when she says, "i hope one day you call up your father and have the guts to tell him how he hurt you and how he made you, hurt another. cos it makes me sad." i think that she blames the father of the asshole, cos yea, we all know history repeats itself. and i believe strongly in nurture.. as opposed to nature. i've seen this stuff.
This song just hurts. The rythem cuts into your soul and the lyrics twist the knife violently right before the combination of the two kills you.
A day in the life of Poe ... ? A lot of deeper meaning in these lyrics, I'm sure ... but it just sounds like the way someone who was dissatisfied with their life would look at things around them.
Or ... it sounds like a sex crime, or a guy treating a girl badly, or something like that, that just really changed her.
I think it's a guy backing out on a dream. The day when a dream died.

Most of the lyrics are rite, But not all are there. Other than that, Poe is a great artist, and this is a great song.
It seems like half of this song is from herself to herself. I don't know much about her childhood, etc, but "I hope one day you have the guts to call up your father and tell him how much he hurt you," sounds like something she wants herself to do. I've seen this stuff two...too many times. It's like when you are sitting there in an abusive relationship, while the abuser is FINALLY sleeping, you sit and try to remind yourself of how this person first made you feel...used to make you feel...and you try to scavange the present for events that might be interpreted as the equivalent of the things that first allured you or attempts at equivalent of the things that snagged you in the first place...like, you wonder if maybe you, yourself, are being too much of an unappreciative bitch to see it now....then you feel sorry for them once you learn their "story"...so you feel bad rejecting them because of what has happened to them in their past....but then you realize that we ALL make our OWN messes and it's time to clean them up.
