There's this girl that's been on my mind
All the time, Sussudio oh oh
Now she don't even know my name
But I think she likes me just the same
Sussudio oh oh

Oh if she called me I'd be there
I'd come running anywhere
She's all I need, all my life
I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio, just say the word
Oh Sussudio

Now I know that I'm too young
My love has just begun
Sussudio oh oh
Ooh give me a chance, give me a sign
I'll show her anytime
Sussudio oh oh

Ah, I've just got to have her, have her now
I've got to get closer but I don't know how
She makes me nervous and makes me scared
But I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio just say the word
Oh Sussudio, oh

Ah, she's all I need all of my life
I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio I just say the word
Oh Sussudio I just say the word
Oh Sussudio I'll say the word
Sussudio oh oh oh
Just say the word

Song Meaning:Sussudio is a word Phil Collins made up to describe every girl he's ever had a crush on.

General Comment:It's funny the different things people hear....dictionary.com - Appearing on VH1 Storytellers, Collins said that "Sussudio" was intended as a mockery of a Japanese fan who was unable to pronounce "studio".

General Comment:Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

General Comment:According to the TV show storytellers, where artists reveal the meaning behind a song, sussudio is about young love - shy young teenagers who don't dare to tell someone they like her/him and fumble out sss..sssu..sususudio. Phil thought he'd find a more suiting word for the song, but went back to it after a while and kept it.

General Comment:Invisibe Touch is right. Collins, like a lot of artists, would work on a tune first and write words to fit as he went along. He just never came up with anything better to replace "Sussudio" with.
I refer to any song with bizarre lyrics now as suffering from "Sussudio Syndrome". (You know the type. Sometimes when you understand why they wrote the song it makes sense, and other times the symbolism in the songs only makes sense to the one who wrote it.)
