Night
Falls and I'am alone
Skin
Yeah chilled me to the bone
You
Turned and you ran
Oh yea
Oh slipped
Right from my hand
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
As a dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Doesn't bring you back
Blue on black

Blind
Oh now I see
Truth
Lies and in between
Wrong
Can't be undone
Slipped
From the tip of your tongue

Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
As a dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Doesn't bring you back
Blue on black

General Comment:I think this song starts out telling about a guy telling about the pain he goes through every day dealing with the pain and emptyness that he goes through in times when he is alone and has nothing to keep his mind off the pain. And nothing he does can mask or take away the pain. It is all irrelevant " Blue on Black, tears on a river, push on a shove, etc. And then the second part is him reliving the last thing or things that she said to him for the last time. Hes had enough and he comes to terms "blind now i see" with the fact that she is gone and never coming back. And there is nothing he can do about it once again because whatever he does is irrelevant because she will never change. Im going through a divorce right now so maybe I am seeing it through different eyes. But this song is helping me out alot. I always thought it was just a bad ass upbeat song and never listened to the words really until recently. Now its an even more badass song that not only has bad ass music but heart, soul, and realness. I know the guy who wrote this experienced alot of pain and put it into lyrics. Awesome, thats what real music is about. Its the difference between just a catchy pop song that is only written to sell records and true music. Pretty much all of Kenny Wayne Shepherd songs are that way. Dying breed.....

Song Meaning:Following the revelation that my partner had been cheating on me the entire relationship as I would leave to go on duty, as he was doing on the night I was hospitalized following being intentionally hit by a car during a traffic stop. This song happened to cycle through on my stereo as I was in a very very dark place. The verse "blind, oh, now I see
truth, lies, and in between wrong, cant be undone oh slipped, from the tip of your tounge" stood out as after doing what cops do and find truth through lies and misdirection the sudden forthcomng of truth after 6 years on a hellacious roller coster ride of a relationship stood out that all of the fighting to keep the relationship together, my intense desire, almost need to have what I thought was supposed to be with him, a place to feel safe where I didnt need to be on guard or closed off and genuinely wanted.
To me this song is about a man so completely in love, he did everything he thought she wanted or needed because he knew she had already been stepping out or moving on, just not out the door yet. He confronted her and expressed all of this and wanted to keep her, though her words confirmed what he knew, that nothing he did or could ever do would be good enough to keep her, she had trailed him along until she was ready to leave him for the man she had already been going to. Despite knowing this, in his misery he still loves her.

General Comment:The man who wrote this song is named Mark Selby and he is a legend. He also wrote "there's your trouble" for the Dixie Chicks but more than that, he has 4 albums out: Dirt, more storms comin', 9 pound hammer and the horse he rode in on - all 4 are beyond words. If you like this song (I assume you do), give Mark Selby a try.

PS. He does his own version of both, “there's your trouble” and “blue on black” on the album the horse he rode in on. It’s an acoustic album, just Mark and his guitar but it’s still fantastic.

PPS. 9 Pound Hammer is his best album – best songs are… Buck fifty and a flat head ford, Leveller reveller, Dangerous Game and Guitar in the rain although the whole album is worthy of serious praise.

General Comment:Consider the lyrics from a standpoint of police brutality toward blacks in some urban American northern cities, circa 1970's.
It all comes together in that vein.
Some great guitar work, there, but makes me wish some of the lead phrases cranked a bit more.
    Nonetheless, a great song.

My Interpretation:The heart of the song gives away the meaning:

    wrong, cant be undone
oh slipped, from the tip of
    your tounge

The song is a response to his girl has said, some kind of apology or explanation for some wrong she has done, and it moot in his eyes. He won't accept her words, saying they are insignificant. The chorus is a list of things he views that are comparisons to her words and her actions, like trying to color blue over black which will only net you black again.

General Comment:i dont even care what this song means. i love listening to it and singing it. i could get lost in it. but when you do listen to or look at the lyrics. its kinda liek everythnig cancels the other out. you cant see blue on black. you cant see tears on a river......

General Comment:His woman left him. No matter what he says, theres nothing he can do to bring her back, its pointless... blue on black.
