Out on the street, I'm stalking the night,
I can hear my heavy breathing.
Paid for the kill but it doesn't seem right;
something there I can believe in .

Voices are calling from inside my head.
I can hear them, I can hear them,
vanishing memories of things that were said,
they can't try to hurt me now.

But a shot in the dark, one step away from you.
A shot in the dark, always creeping up on you

Taught by the powers that preach over me
I can hear their empty reason
I wouldn't listen I learnt how to fight
I opened up my mind to treason

But just like the wounded and when it's too late
They'll remember they'll surrender
Never a care for the people who hate
Underestimate me now

But a shot in the dark one step away from you
A shot in the dark not a thing that you can do
A shot in the dark always creeping up on you

But just like the wounded and when it's too late
They'll remember they'll surrender
Never a care for the people who hate
Underestimate me now

But a shot in the dark one step away from you
A shot in the dark not a thing that you can do
A shot in the dark always creeping up on you

General Comment:The song is about having an epiphany regarding the nature of religious doctrine and dogma. The majority of Ozzy's songs are about about rebelling against the institutions and social mechanisms of control. He specifically rails against the religious establishments. "Paid for the kill but it doesn't seem right" refers to the crucifixion of Christ". "Something there I can't believe in". Expresses the doubt that we all sometimes feel in regards to "our debt to God". The "Shot in the Dark" phrase is a reference to the sudden realization that he has been lied to all these years or the "epiphany". It's like when the truth suddenly hits you like a shot in the dark. Listen to the song again from this perspective and see the pieces fall into place. It all makes perfect sense when placed in context with the major themes of other Ozzy songs. You will find that the core message is a common theme in much of his work.

General Comment:I'm pretty sure this song is about a hitman yes, but not resenting his job. I think it's about him being hired to kill someone he is friends with.

General Comment:This is my favorite Ozzy song. I have no idea why. I'm a sucker for the glam rock hooks of it i guess. It's not going to win any words for earth-shattering originality, but damn if i can't listen to it like 10 times in a row and want to sing it at a karaoke bar to a bunch of bewildered patrons. The point made above about Phil Soussan writing it was very interesting...did not know that. The video is absolute hilarity btw if you can catch it sometime.

General Comment:This song was written by Phil Soussan and "The Ultimate Sin" was discontinued so the Osbourne's did not have to keep paying royalties to him.

General Comment:Hmm.. I think this is actually a song about the assassination of John Lennon. It's sung from Mark Chapman's point of view. Just my opinion...

General Comment:I take back part of my last comment. It's about an assassin who has to take out someone he's in love with, so ignore the whole "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" crap.

General Comment:I remember reading/seeing an interview with Ozzy when this record came out when I was in high school and the explanation he gave was that it was about two assassins in love with each other and they found out their next assignment was each other. Very "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" but 20 years prior.
