Lyrics for The Great Gig In The Sky as interpreted by AgathaKavka

The Great Gig In The Sky Lyrics
"And I am not frightened of dying, any time will do, I
don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime."

"I never said I was frightened of dying."

"I never said I was frightened of dying."

(Instrumental)

I think it's just about death! it comes in the "dark side of oz" as dorothy is sybolically dying or getting knocked unconcious during the tornado as the house is detting thrown around the sky. hence the name great gig in the sky.

If you don't know what "dark side of oz" is, look it up on yahoo

In my opinion, there is SO much emotion in this instrumental song. Even though the lady never actually "sings" any lyrics, her emotions are very apparent. Excitment, anger, sadness, then anger again...and so on... I get so deep into this song when I hear it that I practically experience the same emotions with her.

I heard the lyrics came from interviewing the door man at abby road and then just sampling it on the song

I always wanted to know what clair herself said as she took a breather I thought it was something about hearing her whispering

One of my all time favorite songs. It's just amazing, it captures so much emotion and really shows that bands don't need lyrics as much as most people think they do... this song captures just as much emotion and despair in it with just its music as it would with lyrics.

I think the main theme of this song is death, because of the references to dying in the spoken section and the title "The great gig in the sky", which is possibly a reference to a heaven or afterlife.

In my opinion this song is one of the greatest songs ever made.

By the way, Clare says "I never said I was afraid of dying" at 3:35.

to me its putting a different mood on death besides FEAR like most people. because you CANNOT ESCAPE IT! but thats why he feels that way. because... you cannot escape it. and how different people react to certian circumstances, and there are just so many emotions in the singing. it really does make you feel like you are flying when u listen to it. like you are in the sky... dying. i love it. its so pretty.!

I freakin love this album, it AWSOME, RADICAL, TUBULAR even. to me this song seems to be about religion. at the end of breathe reprise he says:
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells
right after this great gig in the sky starts, the tittle even seems to be a reference, and the sound of clairs voice almost sounds gospelesque - is that a word?. well thats my take on it, it could even be seen as a critical view of religion if you think about it, so much noise and nothing really to say :?

well if she was then obviously she wouldn't agree to do a song that had a critical view of religon. i like your idea though about how it does have to do with religon, and all the while clair is singing it makes u think. your own thoughts... which is really kind of like religon. no one can really force one on you, and even if u are born into a church family u can have your own take on what a verse means while your dad has another, or completely rebel against it all together. its very emotional and probably says a lot more than a lot of songs out there with words.

Gospel singer, yes. She was basically just told to let loose and go for it. But after the recording, she walked out the room to the guys and said "I'm so sorry I fucked that up"!

The really wonderful thing is that they used Claire's first take. It's so spontaneous, it encompasses so many emotional colours, and forms the centre of this complex view of human dispair and doubt. Many people see DSoTM as just a massive technical achievement, without regard to the enormous personal input. This track is my favourite piece from the album.
