We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searchin' our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

You're beggin' me to go then makin' me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you've had
Believe me, believe me, I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love and I'm chained to your side

We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searchin' our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We're losing control
Will you turn me away or touch me deep inside
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same
There's no way this will die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you'll need me to hold

We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searchin' our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searchin' our hearts for so long

My Interpretation:LOVE THIS SONG....there's certain songs that you hear and it makes you wanna dance around with a hairbrush....this is def one of these songs....also i'm adicted to 80's music in general, even though i was born in 1984.....can't explain why....but anyway :))

She's talking about the ups and downs of LOVE

She's not sure where she stands with this guy....he's hot/cold with her.....It's hurting her cause she really loves him.

General Comment:To me, I can see, loosely, a homosexual relationships undertone here.

All of the things that she's saying could be hinting at not knowing if it was even right at first, with the lines "No one can tell us we're wrong/Searchin' our hearts for so long" though, she made the statement that she found it right, after searching.

Over and over again, she says "We are strong" and homosexuals have to be with all of the negativity aimed their way. "Heartache to heartache" can imply that the "casualties" of this metaphorical battlefield can relate to each other, and this can easily refer to any number of young people, but, it can also hint that aforementioned people can lean on each other for support.

I highly doubt that this was the artist's intent, but it's just another angle to look at this.

General Comment:Lol @ Ultimate Panopticon contradicting themself.

I don't really like any other Pat Benetar songs to be honest, but I really love this song.
I think it's about young love. About infactuation and lust.

    "No promises"
To me it seems like, because they're young they're not bound to eachother.. They're not going to promise it's going to last forever because young love typically does.

    "We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong"
That kinda reminds me how parents/adults tell teenagers the young love doesn't last, but they're defying them.. Saying that they can overcome the odds and that they can last even though love is a battlefield.

General Comment:Tch, the song and the music video tell two different stories. Which is one of the most annoying things I find in music. The song seems to be about a relationship (with the singer being yanked around a bit by their partner but still being true) where as the music video is apparently a girl who runs away from home, gets some sort of male service job it seems and rebels with the other girls.

General Comment:Now I'll be honsest I'm not much a fan of must of the other Pat Benatar hits. They're tolerable, but not really something I can jam out too or stand to hear for an extended period of time. This song is amazing, though, and one of the best of the eighties. Music video is pretty sweet too. Perhaps the truest love songs.

General Comment:The song is great. The music video is sweet. I agree with the title and the words totally. And this is coming who doesn't really care for most of Benatar's songs.
