Well you're a real tough cookie with a long history
Of breaking little hearts like the one in me
That's okay, let's see how you do it
Put up you dukes, let's get down to it

Hit me with your best shot
Why don't you hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
Fire away

You come on with it, come on
You don't fight fair
That's okay, see if I care
Knock me down, it's all in vain
I get right back on my feet again

Hit me with your best shot
Why don't you hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
Fire away

Well you're a real tough cookie with a long history
Of breaking little hearts like the one in me
Before I put another notch in my lipstick case
You better make sure you put me in my place

Hit me with your best shot
C'mon, hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
Fire away

Hit me with your best shot
Why don't you hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
Fire away

General Comment:I think this song is perfect for describing the consummate player and womanizer if you will(the roles could be reversed of course). But this female is not putting up with their shit any longer. So she's saying lay out whatever you got and I'll put you where you belong.

General Comment:The only purpose this song serves is to make a great night out with the girls at a karaoke bar! In the best way she could, I feel as if she was hinting that she as gay in the fist line of the song. " Well your a real tough cookie " Don't know many men that would be refereed to by a woman as a real tough cookie. I think Pat was reliving her story of her first lesbian experience and how different it was from that of any male relationships she had in the past. The tough cookie, putting another notch in my lipstick case is almost emphasizing her femininity which in fact was the polor opposite of who she was on state and in her actual life, I feel by her emphasizing the lipstick was almost stating that she was the fem in this relationship and threatening her female companion that she was now comfortable with the whole lesbian experience and was more then willing to leave her first experience and go for another woman. By referring to this woman as a real tough cookie, the woman probably knew she was Pat's first woman experience and had that dominance over her head but after she seen that Pat was starting to come out of her shell, thus the " Before I put another notch in my lipstick case, you better make sure you put me in my place.

General Comment:I had absolutely no idea she sang this. I haven't heard this song in ages. I love it though!! Her voice is very distinctive.

    General Comment:It's about sex.

    >Before I put another notch in my lipstick case

The rest of the song is her making light of some guy's initial refusals, hard-to-get attitude because she knows what's going to happen in the end.

My Interpretation:To me, the meaning is in the first verse. She seems to be talking to a man who is known as a heart-breaker. A guy that Perhaps even uses women and then leaves them. But Pat is saying that even though she knows this about him, she still wants to be with him. Then the third verse line of "Before I put another notch in my lipstick case" seems to be saying that she is really just like him and that's why she wants to be with him. Like saying "push me away like all the other girls, but unlike them i'll keep coming back.

General Comment:So seriously, this song is about a woman wanting to get pregnant. "Hit me with your best shot" means she needs one good sperm to knock her up. Put up your "dukes" refers to the male parts. Why would a woman sing a song to be physically abused?

General Comment:I actually quite like these lyrics. I feel like they accomodate a variety of interpretations while not being overly ambigous or trying to be artificially "open to interpretation." There is the possiblity of looking at it from the abuse angle, and there's also my favorite: that it's a sort of joyous what-the-hell -- you know those relationships that are just all fighting but they're really passionate? like you are clashing and clashing and you can't be together or apart, and it can be painful but you go for it! And so forth, I'm sure there are others.
