So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's done so far
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
All of us under its spell
We know that it's probably magic
Have you been half asleep
And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm supposed to be
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers (the lovers), the dreamers (the dreamers) and me
Ba-da-da-di, da-da-di
Ba-da-da-da-di-da-ooh
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection

In the begining he is saying that people think of rainbows as illusions, but Kermit the philosopher doesn't believe this. "I know they are wrong wait and see"
Kermit then talks about how someone came up with the idea of wishing on a star and then asks what has it done so far? Then he tells us in a question. He tells us that it "keeps us stargazing". We are hoping to see a shooting star and make a wish. This is our dream.
Our dream is to be able to have what we want (make a wish) magically. He says that it is like a spell and even though we know that it is just magic (has no basis in reality), we none the less still hope to see that shooting star and make our wish.
He then talks about hearing voices. He asks if the voice he hears is the same as the one that sailors hear. Now, you may think Kermit is referring to the muses who suckered sailors into their doom.
I think he is talking about the voices sailors hear that calls them out to the pleasure of the sea. As in, "the sailor heard his calling; to sail the seas."
Kermit then says that he cannot ignore it, that it is real and not imaginary. What I think he is saying here is that he is destined to be a lover and a dreamer (in a sense like we all are.)
And that is what I think he is saying overall here. That dreaming is not real and we are told that dreams are not real, but dreams are as real as love (feelings) and somehow Kermit is connected to them (they are all related).
Of course this song was sung by a muppet so who knows, but it is still pretty deep and a beautiful song.
It may be sung by a puppet, but it's been sung by others, such as Sarah McLaughlin (sp?). I don't know if you're right, but your thoughts on the meaning actually make sense :)
