Lyrics for Don't Know When but a Day Is Gonna Come as interpreted by PLANES

Don't Know When but a Day Is Gonna Come Lyrics
Was it true what I heard about the son of God?
Did he come to save? Did he come at all?
And if I dried his feet with my dirty hair
Would he make me clean again?

They say they don't know when but a day's gonna come
When there won't be a moon and there won't be a sun
It will just go black, it will just go back
To the way it was before

I knew a lovely girl with such pretty pride
And every man wanted her, yeah, and so did I
Yeah, and so did I
But she up and died in a fit of vanity

Now men with purple hearts carry silver guns
And they'll kill a man for what his father's done
But what my father did, no, it don't mean shit
I'm not him

And you think I need some discipline well, I've had my share
I've been sent to my room, I've been sat in a chair
And I held my tongue, I didn't plug my ears
No, I got a good talking to

And I don't know why, but I still try to smile
When they talk at me like I'm just a child
Well, I'm not a child
No, I am much younger than that

But now I've read some books and I've grown quite brave
If I could just speak up I think I would say
That there is no truth
There is only you and what you make the truth

So, I'll just sing my songs and I'll pass a hat
And then I'll leave your town and I'll never look back
No I won't look back because the road is clear
And laid out ahead of me

And I'll get home I'll meet my friends at our favorite bar
We'll get some lighter heads for our heavy hearts
And we'll share a drink, yeah we'll share our fears
And they'll know how I love them
They will know how I love
They will know how I love them
I'm nothing without their love

Now I don't know when but day's gonna come
When there won't be a moon and there won't be a sun
It will all go black, it will all go back
To the way it's supposed to be

Is it true what they say about the son of God?
Did he die for us? Did he die at all?
If I sold my soul, for a bag of gold to you
Which one of us would be the foolish one?
Which one of us would be the fool?
Which one of us would be the foolish one?
Which one of us would be the fool?

Could you please start explaining?
You know I need some understanding
Could you please start explaining?
You know I need some understanding
Could you please start explaining?
You know I need understanding
Could you just start explaining?
You don't understand

I think is this the most instrumentally challening song Bright Eyes has done to date. Wow. It really builds and explodes. The lyrics are a bit screwed up there from what he says, though...

i agree with b-rad that this song has to deal with his child hood and questioning religion and what he was taught as a kid. I think also that in the "But what my father did, no, it don't mean shit, I'm not him" part, it talks about how, if a member in your family did something, ppl will look at you for what the person did, and not for anything that you do.This song's great, Conor knows what ppl need for life too, Friends/Love, Writing/Expressing yourself, and Alcohol (going out and havin a good time)

This is one of my favorites from this album. I just saw them in concert a few weeks ago and they are absolutely amazing. That was also the first time I heard this song. I think it's brilliant and everyone can relate to it in some way.

in a live recording of this i heard him add this verse -
'well its hard to ignore all the news reports
they say we must defend ourselves fight on foreign soil
against the infidels
with the oil wells
god saves gas prices'
on another version he sings
'god saves texax family fortunes'

conor has taken an anti-war position on the Iraq thing. This verse explains Bush's alterior motive to the 'war on terrorism'. Saddam wouldn't give him oil. The 'new regime' will use the oil to rebuild their country by...guess what? selling it to the US. He's got a point.

i wrote an english paper on this song relating to the book "night" by elie wiesel.

In this song, Conor Oberst is talking about his disbelief in God and Jesus, and doubting his existance. When one is in several terrible situations, it is hard to have hope for the future, and keep faith in God when it seems he is not "helping" you.

There is a great deal of imagery in the lyrics. For example, in the chorus, "..When there won't be a moon and there won't be a sun / It will all go black, it will all go back to the way it's supposed to be". In religious theory, before God, the world was dark in a sense of light, and desparation. Without God, not only was there no light, but there was no hope. Relating to the lyrics, God (according to the Bible) controls the sun and moon. So without God, there is no sun and mood, therefore the "black" represents despair and hopelessness without a God. However, the last bit leaves us with Oberst telling us his disbelief in God - that it is supposed to be black, therefore there is not supposed to be a God.

love,
karly

karly, i wish that my school would let us to do papers like that. i really like the book "night" and this is one of the most amazing songs i have ever heard.
conor oberst can write unbelievable lyrics. it's unfortunate that i only started listening to his words recently, rather than just hearing his music like i used to. now i can see his true talent.

wow... this song is perfect for how i've been feeling lately. questioning the teachings of Christianity, and how my family is getting angry with me for not agreeing to everything our church says or does. this song came to me at the perfect moment.... Conor has an amazing gift to express his emotions in an artistic way that is beautiful, and yet relatable to everyone out there.

He may doubt his faith but it shows he does believe in something but i agree its faith in general but i believe, but I think his lyrics are deep enough its impossible to define it but its just great music.

OK, I just want to make sure that you all know, Conor is an artist, and not every piece of artwork has a direct corellation to what is going on in one's life. Conor writes fictional songs, you understand, yes? He writes songs like stories, that are appealing to whatever might suite his fancy at any particular time.

I recently questioned whether Jesus died for me. DId God really send his only son to die on the cross for my sins? and I got my revelation. In Mathew Satan looked at Jesus and said proove to me your the son of GOd. Do something proove it. And Jesus looked at Satan and said I am because God says so. and on that note I decided to choose to believe and not question and just say God says so............. Our carnal minds cant understand the trinity. Father son and the Holy spirit. So why try? Just make the choice to believe because God says so. and need nothing more.

Amazing lyrics and music. One of my favourites off Lifted.
The first two verses never seem to leave my head -- the second one sounds like some sort of slightly twisted children's rhyme, and it's really memorable. Lines like 'And I'll get home I'll meet my friends at our favorite bar / We'll get some lighter heads for our heavy hearts' are genius too. And the music sounds like some lost Dylan or Nick Drake classic. Love it..

One small complaint: 'there is no truth / there is only you and what you make the truth'. Lunkheaded postmodernist nonsense. Probably the kind of philosophy you'd start to entertain if you were a soul-searching twenty-something who has gone through some sort of loss of faith. It makes no sense at all, but somehow it seems to be the banner intellectual code for this generation. sigh...
/rant

Anyway, good song. Love 'Lifted' too.

And I don't know why, but I still try to smile when they talk at me like I'm just a child
Well I'm not a child, no I am much younger than that
this is a line that sums up Oberst, its so cynical and ironic, and powerful
