by starlight I’ll kiss you
and promise to be your one and only
I’ll make you feel happy
and leave you to be lost in mine
and where will we go, what will we do?
soon said I, will know
dead eyes, are you just like me?
her eyes were as vacant as the sea
dead eyes, are you just like me?
and all along, we knew we’d carry on
just to belong
by starlight I know you
as lovely as a wish granted true
my life has been empty, my life has been untrue
does she really know, who I really am?
does she really know me at last?
dead eyes, are you just like me?

General Comment:I disagree with this ^ Billy also wrote songs like Luna and Beautiful about Chris, and those are very romantic and loving. The songs he wrote about their divorce (Perfect, Medellia, Valentine) are so sad. I don't think you write songs like that unless you're really heartbroken. Here are a few quotes from Billy about his wife and the wedding day :

"Chris buys me a monthly bus pass so I can come and visit her anytime I want…she has a decent job to help her pay some of the bills she incurs while attending school (she sells t-shirts at the Hard Rock Café part-time) …she feeds me and comforts me and my worn soul, making me feel important for the first time in my life…this love and attention is so welcome that music quickly becomes a fading notion because I am getting all that I need from her…"

"It is a bright, sunny day, this first day of marital bliss…I am happy, for it is all over in my mind, literally and figuratively… during the wedding, all sorts of flowers and gifts have arrived from all over the world, a tribute to our union and my growing international life/fame…I am now a married man, and see my wife within the context of my blood family, she is me and I am her"

"in my mind, I figure at least I am getting married to the right girl, the one who is in my heart…"

"The party is pleasant and anti-climatic, and when all the guests and friends and family finally gone home, Chris and I decompress some of the tension of the day by cleaning up a little, happy to have our home and our life back to ourselves…the hour comes and it is finally time to go to bed, so we head upstairs hand in hand for the first time as husband and wife…she is beautiful, my wife…a sweet soul, whose entire demeanor is that she doesn’t want to hurt a fly…when we join together, it is as close as I ever feel to her lost heart, because normal everyday life just overwhelms her…I slowly take off her dress, laughing, and we kiss tenderly in a moment that only happens once in a lifetime…and I feel her closer than I ever have, and ever will again…"

I think Billy just felt he was too young and not quite ready to marry, and maybe he thought Chris was a little to detached, but he definitely loved her.,

General Comment:I think this song was written about Billy's marriage to Chris. It tells the story about how he looks into her eyes and knew she felt nothing for him and in return he knew he didn't really love her either. Hence the lines, Dead eyes are you just like me? and her eyes were as vacant as the seas. He's wondering if he ever knew the person he's about to marry. I think somewhat he's even regretting his marriage.

These don't seem like very loving, positive lines to me.

    General Comment:Found this:

"In Billy Corgan's autobiography he describes his wedding day, writing that while the priest spoke he looked into his wife's eyes and thought she was a million miles away. He makes constant reference to her eyes in this song: "Dead eyes vacant as the sea." He didn't enjoy the wedding day and in the night when his wife had gone to bed he went out and looked up at the stars and thought he had made a mistake, hence "by starlight." He says, "I'll promise to be your one and only," and "Are you just like me," showing that he thinks she feels the same way. Corgan married Chris Fabian in 1993, and they divorced in 1997."

General Comment:It's about seeing your same pain in the eyes of you lover.
"Dead eyes, dead eyes, are you just like me?"

Being able to share the same pain with someone you're in love with sounds purty emo but awesome.
"I'll make you feel happy, and leave you to be lost in mine"

    My favorite Pumpkins song.
