Lyrics for Ironic as interpreted by jstalilwyrd

Ironic Lyrics
An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic, don't you think

[Chorus]
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought, it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well, isn't this nice."
And isn't it ironic,l don't you think

[Chorus]

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic, don't you think
A little too ironic, and yeah I really do think

[Chorus]

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny way of helping you out
Helping you out.

Ironically, of course it isn't actually ironic, perhaps that's the point of the song, how ironic Alanis!

here's the real lyrics:

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic... don't you think?

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think?

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic... don't you think?
A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

cbennett is right, although i love this song, it isnt ironic at all, it's more coincidental, irony is hard to explain but the example i can think of is the saying 'be sincere whether you mean it or not' - it's ironic because being sincere means you mean. how bout another example, like you set out to avoid something but those actions actually lead you to the thing you are trying to avoid

Alanis stated in an interview that Glen (her producer) and her were just trying to make each other laugh by the absurd lyrics.

Think about it. The irony of the song is that it is not ironic. And Alanis knows this because she asks towards the end of the song "and isn't it ironic, don't you think? A little too ironic and yeah I really do think." Anyone with half a brain knows she is making a real joke out of all of us here and we need to laugh with her.

i dunno y but i've always thaught this song centred around her 'meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife', and while thinking of how ironic that was she came accross other ironic things in the world. dont reckon its right or anything but thats just the way i like to think of it

Yea, like everyone says the song isn't ironic. Irony would be like...not just rain on your wedding day in general. It would have to be that the weather has been BEAUTIFUL for the past 2 months. You're thinking how great a time of the year you picked for your wedding. Then, your wedding day comes and it finally rains, after WEEKS and WEEKS of great weather. That's ironic. Not bringing an umbrella when it rains isn't ironic. Carrying and umbrella back and forth to and from work with you every single day and having the weather be beautiful for weeks and not needing it, and then the one day you forget it its pours, is ironic. This is a great song though, about coincidences. It makes you think about life and how often it can screw you over, lol!

i found a site that is dedicated entirely to proving the title of this song to be irrelevant...something about everything not really being ironic. it's great to have people in the world that waste their lives preaching about stuff when no one really cares...

"it's great to have people in the world that waste their lives preaching about stuff when no one really cares..."

That's a bit harsh on Alanis.
