Lyrics for Luka as interpreted by Novartza

Luka Lyrics
My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud

They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am

Sad, sad song about a kid being physically abused. Maybe I'm fucked up because this is one of my favorite songs and I always go around singing it. But although it's sad, it's really, really catchy.

Suzanne Vega has actually said in interviews that the song is about a little girl being abused, but the language used in the song seems too mature for a child, and more like an older woman. A battered wife, perhaps. I think it works both ways, though.

The part about the abuse is convincing. But I think the abused person is trying to hide it by making excuses- "I think it's because I'm clumsy" & "Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again". It may be someone she knows. The repetition in almost every verse suggests the desperation of it all. THAT is how much she's being abused!

It portrays how emotionally damaging physical abuse is; "They only hit until you cry, after that you dont ask why, you just don;'t argue anymore." Also the fact that the vistim learns to blame herself; " I think it's because I'm clumsy I try not to talk too loud Maybe it's because I'm crazy",trying to rationalize the abuse, but still blaming herself.

It's about a little boy. About childabuse. A very sad song, if you ask me, but it really contains some catchy lines.. You can't hear this song, without thinking about it, 'cause the lyrics are so strong..

I love this song.

The best and most catchy song about child abuse of all time. I really enjoy this song, but I don't enjoy what it's about.

I do believe that this song is about a little boy being abused, not a battered wife. The line "They only hit until you cry" means that more than one person is abusing the narrator. Of course she could be making a generalization about men or abusive people in general, but within the context of the song, I think that it sounds like it's a child talking about their situation.

Luka is a little boy...obvious. think back to phil collins "no son of mine" and fill in the blanks. Look deeper into the lyrics and you will see...

I love this song. I remember watching an interview with her on her website http://www.suzannevega.com/index.htm where she talked about this. It's about a 8 or 9 year old little boy (I can't remember which age she said) being abused.

She also talked about a boy who lived upstairs from her in one of her old apartments named Luka who WASN'T abused. It obviously didn't bother him because she says he went back to her old apartment to get her former roommate to prove to a girl that Suzanne Vega had really lived there. Nice way to pick up chicks. XD

it never occured to me that it might be a child i always assumed it was a women an adult women but listening back no i think that it does make sense for it to be a child cos the child blames themselvles for this and says is it because im clumsy etc but i dont know could be either way

Powerful song.

As others have said, about a young boy being abused.

Reminds me of my childhood, used to listen to a Suzanne Vega tape all of the time - Tom's diner was another favourite. And Right Said Fred. God I was a geeky kid.

Not much to say about this - but yeah, powerful emotional song that makes you think.

I think it's real disgusting that there are people on this earth, lots of them, who birth a child then beat them up while they grow up. I mean, think about it, you decide to give life to a person them proceed to physically abuse them. The more I think about it, the more it makes me sick/angry...

Anyway, yeah, good song, revolting subject matter.

This song is my ultimate favourite song of all time ever, and always will be. It's about a boy being abused but i was bullied at school and the song seems to have so many different meanings. I can't explain it, it's just one of them songs i have listened to sooo many times and never get bored of.
It's a fantastic song, the melody is great and Suzanne has such an excellent voice, nobody could have done it better. This song means the world to me, i love it!

This song is clever. Its a catchy sing-a-long tune with a sad meaning to it. Its in the kid's perspective; pretending to be content through the catchy tune...if you think about it in that way.

I'm bad at explaining things..lol!

"They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore"
Seriously doubt that it's a child after these lines. My point of view is that Luka is a woman, and that her husband is out until late every night. When she asks why he won't tell and they start to fight about it. The fight always end the same way. [see quote] But that's just my personal opinion. I guess it could be about a child when you look at the other verses.

They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore

this sentence makes me cry.. if it is about a child I think here we can see this in his perspective.. I mean his parents are sick and he is kinda understand them and blam himself.
g-o-o-d song!!!!

Whoever said this song isn't about a child is being abused...have you actually seen the video? It shows Luka wandering the streets and is too scared to go home at night. And he's the one who lives upstairs from her, not her husband?!

"A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child -- In real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different." Suzanne Vega, in a Swedish television special recorded 3 November 1987.
