Lyrics for Ohio as interpreted by Hunter

Ohio Lyrics
The soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio

Gotta get downto it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
We're finally on our won.
This summer I haear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

A protest song of Kent State back in the early 1970s.

In addition to the protest it's about the four students who were killed when the national guard opened fire on unarmed students demonstrating against Vietnam!

i don't think it's protesting kent state...it's protesting nixon's use of the national guard against students at kent state...an action that resulted in the deaths of four students

This is about the events of May 4, 1970, when the US National Guard shot 4 unarmed students at Kent State University in Ohio. Neil Young wrote this shortly after seeing a news report on the tragedy. It was released 10 days after the shootings.

The lyrics say it all. It is what you read.

The "drumming" is war drums. The government is now making war on students.

Neil Young's songs all have a real meaning to them, I love it.

A song about one of the most tragic domestic events of the Vietnam era.

I recall reading somewhere (the liner notes of Decade, perhaps?) that Neil later felt somewhat guilty for cashing in with a hit song about the bloody business.

This song first got me into CSNY, and still is one of my favorite protest songs. Good guitar work.

This song means a lot to me. The shooting at Kent State is something that should've never happened and one of the most important days in American history. Sometimes I think this is a better protest song than Blowin in the Wind or For What It's Worth. It shows that the government wasn't only fighting a war in Vietnam, they were also fighting against the counter-culture in America.

This song shows that people have had to die for such sad reasons, he is trying to communicate that we have to keep fighting because people have died for the cause and it would be foolish to stop.

Why there are no protests these days ? The war in Irak
sounds, feels, smells more like Vietnam ... lives are lost,
billions are wasted and yet not much noise on campuses... I guess the brainwashing machine is at full
speed ...
