Diamonds and Pearls was released in 1992 so I don't think this song has anything to do with miscarriage.
I think he's singing about the love he has for his girlfriend who's more interested in material things,he's asking if giving her diamonds and pearls would make her happy but then the verse below sounds like he'll wait, he'll be patient until she realises that his love is enough, that his love can make her happier than all the diamonds and pearls in the world.
But I'm also confused by the 'happy boy or a girl' line.... He does sing this song with Rosie Gaines and she sings that line with him... that may explain the boy or a girl bit - he's singing to her, she's singing to him?

Anyway- Prince is a GENIUS..and I love him.
There has always been a lot of speculation on Prince's sexuality, but I always felt the line "would you be a happy boy or a girl" was a) simply a matter of keeping the rhythm; and b) somewhat addressing the fact that there is also a female singer (Rosie Gaines) in the song. So anyone, male or female, straight or gay, could sing the line to someone they love and be correct.
The song is one of his more straightforward and easily interpreted ones to me, it's just him singing to his loved one and saying that one day she will see that their love for each other exceeds all material things, petty bickering, color, etc. If he could he would give her anything she wanted but all he has to offer is his love, and he trusts that one day she will see how great that is, that it really is the answer to all she has ever needed, and when she finally realizes this it "will blow her mind."
