The rain had started tapping
On the window near my bed
There was a loophole in my dreaming
So I got out of it
And to my surprise my eyes were wide
And already open
Just my nightstand and my dresser
Where those nightmares had just been

So I dressed myself and left then
Out into the gray streets
But everything seemed different
Completely new to me
The sky, the trees, houses, buildings
Even my own body
And each person I encountered
I couldn't wait to meet

And I came upon a doctor
Who appeared in quite poor health
I said, "There's nothing I can do for you
You can't do for yourself"
He said, "Oh, yes you can, just hold my hand
I think that that would help"
So I sat with him a while
And I asked him how he felt
He said, "I think I'm cured
No, in fact I'm sure of it
Thank you stranger
For your theraputic smile"

So that's how I learned the lesson
That everyone's alone
And your eyes must do some raining
If you're ever gonna grow
When crying don't help, you can't compose yourself
It's best to compose a poem
An honest verse of longing
Or a simple song of hope

That's why I'm singing, baby, don't worry
Because now I've got your back
And every time you feel like crying
I'm gonna try to make you laugh
And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad
Then we'll wait for it to pass
And I will keep you company
Through those days so long and black

We'll keep working on the problem
We know we'll never solve
Of love's uneven remainders
Our lives are fractions of a whole
But if the world could remain within a frame
Like a painting on a wall
Then I think we'd see the beauty then
And stand staring in awe

At our still lives posed
Like a bowl of oranges
Like a story told
By the fault lines and the soil

General Comment:I don't know... he reminds me of myself.. Empty days I dressed up and walk in the grey streets everything seems new to me, even my body.. and my eyes they feel heavy .. without speaking a word to myself or to my mind... just empty.. I don't know if it's a good thing... oh well

My Interpretation:The first minute of this song resinates a lot in regards to my past and current experiences.
Conor is describing a dream he had. This dream is not glorified or exaggerated. He is acting out routine aspects of an average persons life, except in the dream world there is no hesitation or anxiousness. When he walks down the street he's not afraid of other peoples judgment and he is not worried about engaging in unpredicted social interactions. He is able to find beauty in things he never had before. While most people dream about fantasized experiences, Conor is simply dreaming about living out a normal life. Being able to go outside without constantly feeling intimidated or different. The happy tempo contradicts his feelings inside and that's why it works so perfectly. Conor is amazing at taking feelings that no one talks about and making you feel one with yourself. He proved to me that i'm not alone and i'm sure he did the same for others.

General Comment:It's pretty easy to interpret and the song is self-explanatory. Especially with the story of the doctor. Everyone is alone and needs somebody to lend their hand and be there for them.

My Interpretation:While vaguely listening to this song for the first time, I thought it was an upbeat and happy song; until I heard the instrumental ending.

This song is from HIS perspective of himself comforting others. He has helped others find the positive side of their lives. What suggested that this sort of optimism is only a façade is when he opens his eyes awaking from his nightmare, coming back to "reality", which I think is his state of mind where he conforms his thoughts, becomes the person that everyone else sees.
In the next verse, he puts on the act of being just a "regular", happy person.

The rest of the song is incredibly hopeful. Perhaps he is adapting what he preaches for himself? But again, he thinks of the big picture, starts thinking more and more about life and is reminded of the inner thoughts, his beliefs that wear him down.

The ending, at least to me, represented his returning/after-feelings of depression. He helps these people to be happy, but he doesn't believe what he tells them for himself. What he's told them is lies to blind them from miserableness he personally feels.

A lot of versions don't have the instrumental ending unfortunately. ~ It definitely leads well into the next song on the album but it serves purpose in this song as well; definitely making it the song I appreciate most.

It's an emotional song. Something many people can definitely be able to relate to in any range of extent.

My Interpretation:A balance between living for yourself / living for the world.
A balance between narcissism / compassion.

Song Meaning:Its a very zen song: the recognition that we are all alone. Also, that we are too absorbed in our own experiences to see the world as beautiful. Triumphant in that, even though both of these things are true, there is still value to the human experience, because compassion is valuable, even though in our alonness, the only person with the power to make one happy is them self. There is an acknowledgement of the deficiencies of love because of the fundamental truth of alonness, but an overall feeling that, even though this is a "problem we know we'll never solve", we will keep at it, being compassionate and loving, and seeing the beauty in what we can have.

General Comment:I first heard this song back in something like 2004, when I liked it because it was catchy. Now, at 16, it means a lot more to me, haha.

General Comment:I love this song because it sounds so happy but if you listen to it right, it should make you cry.
