Lyrics for Cubicles as interpreted by MooWasHere

Cubicles Lyrics
It's the tearing sound of love-notes
Drowning out the gray stained windows
And the view outside is sterile
But I'm only two cubes down
I'll photocopy all the things that we could be
If you took the time to notice me
But you can't now, I don't blame you
And it's not your fault that no one ever does
-Chorus-
But you don't work here anymore
Its just a vacant 3 by 4
And they might fill your place
A temporary stand-in for your face

It happens all the time
And I can't help but think I'll die alone

So I'll spend my time with strangers
A condition that is terminal
In this water-cooler romance
And its coming to a close
We could be in the park and dancing by a tree
Kicking over blades we see
Or a dark beach with a black view
As pin-pricks in the velvet break our fall
-Chorus-
I know you don't work here anymore, I know you don't work here anymore
I know you don't work here anymore, I know you don't work here anymore
I know you don't work here anymore, I know you don't work here anymore
Sometimes I think I'll die alone, sometimes I think I'll die alone
Sometimes I think I'll die alone, live and breathe and die alone
Sometimes I think I'll die alone, sometimes I think I'll die alone
Sometimes I think I'll die alone, I'd think I'd love to die alone

I think I'd love to die alone

What is it that Gerard and Frankie(?) scream at the end?
When he's singing the last line, Sounds like he's saying:
"[just let], I think I'd love to die, [me down], think I'd love to die alone"
Something like that...

Here is a complete ramble, I assure you.
I think the hospital idea is a great one. It doesn't seem to fit completely with the whole song, in my opinion, but I think there's definitely something in that.
The person he's referencing to might not necessarily be dead, they could have fallen out, which is why they don't notice him and he "doesn't blame" them, perhaps because of something he has done.

"It happens all the time
And I can't help but think I'll die alone"
I think this could be in reference to everyone dies at some point, or in fact, that relationships end all the time and he thinks that in the end, he'll be alone.

"So I'll spend my time with strangers" could be interpreted in different ways. I think it might be linked to "a temporary stand in for your face", but I'm not sure. If it was the hospital idea it could be the doctors and nurses.

This is what I love about songs like this. There's depth to them and that means there are so many different meanings to different people. That's one of the many things I love about My Chem. :)

i just think this song is what it is. about a girl he knew from work he wishes he could date, but never asks and she's gone, and because he's so shy, he resolves himself to his fate. which is being alone.

It's taken me a long time to figure out what this song means to me. I think I finally have it.

I agree with some previous posts- the song is about love. Gerard has fallen for someone who plays a small role in his life, but means the world to him. However, the "cubicles" symbolize life. He is expressing his feelings of remorse; "I know you don't work here anymore" means that the woman he loves died, if you're keeping up with the symbolism. "Sometimes I think I'll die alone": he's wondering if he's going to kill himself. To add on to a previous post, "And they might fill your place/ A temporary stand in for your face" is Gerard's obvious belittling of meaningless relationships in his life that cannot compare to his love for the woman he lost. To address a part I have not seen any comments on yet, I would like to establish meaning in the following lines: "We could be in the park and dancing by a tree/ Kicking over blades we see/ Or a dark beach with a black view/ As pin-pricks in the velvet break our fall" The first to lines are clearly a reunion of the two. Their liveliness in dancing indicates that she is alive. However, in the two following lines, the "dark beach with a black view" is death. He's referencing the banks of the River Styx, which- in Greek mythology- takes dead souls to eternity, or the "black view". The "pinpricks in the velvet" are flaws in reality; the "fall" of being separated from one another is ceased in the suspension of reality. Or perhaps the "pinpricks" are flaws in the grand design, rather, and Gerard is implying that the universe does not wish for the two to be together.
Gerard concludes his beautiful remorse by deciding that it would be easier to kill himself.

I apologize if the interpretation depresses you. I am not suicidal- this is just how I view the song.

I can't help but think that this song goes along, somewhat deliberately, with Skylines And Turnstiles. In such that it depicts a man who had worked at the World Trade Centers and that his love interest for this female co-worker could never be because of what happened.

Pretty skewed, I know.

I don’t mean to sound like, “Oh, this song is so the situation I’m in right now. ”

… But it most definitely is. XD

To me, this song reminds me of a guy that notices a girl and wants to be with her badly, but doesn’t know how to tell her.

“It‘s the tearing sound of love-notes; Drowning out the gray stained windows…”

She doesn’t even notice his existence… and neither does anybody else.

“I‘ll photocopy all the things that we could be; If you took the time to notice me; But you can’t now, I don’t blame you; And it’s not your fault that no one ever does.”

The next part of my interpretation, a lot of people think she actually left, and that’s what I think. Then, he starts liking somebody else so he can get his mind off of her… but even though he tries to like someone else, he still can’t forget about this girl.

“But you don‘t work here anymore…”

“And they might fill your place; A temporary stand-in for your face.”

TEMPORARY.

He daydreams about her all the time, and thinks about what could have been if he just told her the truth, but he chickened out and now he’s afraid he’ll die alone.

“We could be in the park and dancing by a tree…”

“Sometimes I think I‘ll die alone…”

Anyway, sorry for the extremely long post. That’s just what I think of the song. Great and powerful, by the way. I don’t understand why the band doesn’t like it. Many people can relate to the song, and the weird lyrics is what makes it so unique… and not to mention fun to interrupt! =]

TThis song, i think, is not about work or anything like that. it is only writtenin that very metaphoric format. but about him beingmlonely because the girl is gone now and hes looking back on it and thinking what could of happened if he said the right words or whatever.
I ADORE this song, it might be best song theyve written This albulm is the very best of mcr because it doesnt sound forced at all.

to me it's saying that he really likes this girl, and she leaves without ever acknowleding him. then he, or maybe his friends, try to get a new girl to make him happy again. but it isnt working. and he's saying that he thinks he'll die alone because he really only loves her and he'll love to die alone because he would never try to love someone else again, so it wouldnt be worth it.

something like that =]

And the song talks clearly about this guy that works in some kind of office and falls in love with this girl that works there to but he doesn't have the guts to tell her everything he feels about her..and then she is fired or moves to a better job and he misses her...and knows he will never have the change to tell how much he loved her...and that's just fucking painfull....I know what I'm talking about ...believe me!

Probably wrong, but I always think this song is about a guy, working in a really crappy office, who falls in love with this girl who is similarly unhappy at the job. He watches her at the office, but later finds out that she committed suicide. I'm disinclined to agree with the hospital interpretation, though I guess it kind of works.

Also reminds me of the video for Disturbed's "Voices."

But whatever it's about, it's definitely one of my favorite songs by MCR (though it's so hard to choose).

I think this song, as so many people have said, is about a person (whoever that may be) seeing someone and loving them but they never notice them back. And so they try to fill the lonliness and emptiness (so I'll spend my time with strangers) by talking to people they hardly know but they still can't seem to move on because they see the person they love everyday.
It is a fantastic song, one of my favourite MCR songs!

he's writing love notes to express his feelings but he keeps ripping them up as he is trying to express his feelings and he's thinking of what life would be like with this person but he knows who used to work in a toilette and she's left and he's saying that he allways misses his cance it happens all the time and that he'll never pluck up the courage and express how he feels in his heart and he says he'll die alone coz he'll never express him self and he'd lovw to die alone is maybe just self convintion

Along the lines of Starless Eyes, this song is just about love and longing. He tries to show his affection, but he gets rejected. He tries to fill up his day with people who don't actually matter to him, but just to get away from the one he cares about. Also, he tries to think that he's better off by making himself think she was "fired" and somebody will her place one day.

Um, I think the song is straightforward. He fell in love with someone who didn't know, she got fired and he never told her and feels kind of lonely because he missed his chance again. But he doesn't blame her for not noticing: "It's not your fault that no one ever does." He feels alienated.

And I think this website is for people to find the deeper meanings to songs, not badmouth bands you don't like. And I also think that even though people like that are rude, this is also not a place to badmouth those people in return.
