Lyrics for Brighton Rock as interpreted by f_mercury

Brighton Rock Lyrics
Happy little day, Jimmy went away
Met his little Jenny on a public holiday
A happy pair they made, so decorously laid
'Neath the gay illuminations all along the promenade
'It's so good to know there's still a little magic in the air
I'll weave my spell"

'Jenny will you stay - tarry with me pray
Nothing 'ere need come between us tell me love, what do you say'
'Oh no I must away to my Mum in disarray
If my mother should discover how I spent my holiday
It would be of small avail to talk of magic in the air
I'll weave my spell'

CHORUS
O Rock of Ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still
O Lady Moon, shine down a little people magic if you will

Jenny pines away, writes a letter everyday
'We must ever be together, nothing can my love erase'
'Oh no I'm compromised, I must apologise
If my lady should discover how I spent my holidays . . .'

Song isn't about much just a tale of two people.....but damn it sure does show off Brian May's skill

But his guitar solo was built around this song, and that generally felt like it went on for an hour... :)

Oh, and if you like it on Sheer Heart Attack, listen to it on Queen Live Killers, it is so much better.

I love this song so much! It's about a holiday romance, it's so damn catchy but you can't sing it cos it's too high! Typical...

Just an excuse for a slamming guitar solo :)

It could possibly be a kind of nod to The Whos' "Quadrophenia". The main character in Quadrophenia is named Jimmy, and he goes to Brighton on holiday and hooks up with a girl.

Nice riff! Very nice lyrics as well, they remind me of how overly-dramatic people can be about love.

It's not a random title... Brighton is a resort city in the UK, and the story is about going to Brighton, meeting a girl, and having a wife/GF back home.

The title Brighton Rock is a play on words. Brighton being a seaside resort and "Rock" or "Rock candy" being a long & cylindrical sweet that usually has the words "Brighton Rock" printed (using food die) throughout the entire piece of candy.
But obviously we could also assume Brian meant Brighton Rock as in Rock and Roll.
The start of the song could be seen in the perspective of cupid looking down on two lovers and "Weaving his spell". Though essentially it shows how holiday romances very rarely work out.

I love the beginning of the song as on Sheer Heart Attack. The guitars rising out of the fair sounds just creates a really cool effect. Possibly the best beginning of a Queen song ever.

Mr. Badguy, when you say "Brian May's finest hour," do you mean playing or writing? As far as playing, definitely. But I think he wrote a better song, which would be the Prophet's Song. But that's just my opinion.

As for the lyrics, it's quite obviously about a holiday love.

I have this song on both the milton keyes and wembley stadium live albums. I was quite shocked to hear that on the studio version it actually had lyrics :) Anywho, 9 minutes is fairly long for a guitar solo, but it definitely kicks ass

definitely.

Oh, and it was originally going to be called "Brighton Fu**"

This song is about a fling a married man has on a beach holiday. He is flattered by the attention but goes back to his wife and family.

erasmus11290,
I think he means how Brian May took the time to get the guitar part together with the delay effects in order to get the harmony perfect.

The idea for the 3 point single echo solo originaly came on a song called "Blag" by Smile
Smile for those who don't know was the band that became Queen later on

It's called "Brighton Rock", but it's not about Brighton, it's about Blackpool (I believe at one time the title of the song was going to be "Blackpool Rock). The "gay illuminations" are a reference to the Blackpool Illuminations.

Does it have anything to do with Graham Greene's novel "Brighton Rock"?
