Dolls of voodoo all stuck with pins
One for each of us and our sins
So you lay us in a line
Push your pins they make us humble
Only you can tell in time
If we fall or mearly stumble

But tell me
Can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?

Tell me
Can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine
And I'm pain free
You jab another pin
Jab another pin in me

Mirror, mirror upon the wall
Break the spell or become the doll
See you sharpening the pins
So the holes will remind us
We're just the toys in the hands of another
And in time, the needles turn from shine to rust

But tell me
Can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?

Tell me
Can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine
And I'm pain free
You jab another pin
Jab another pin in me

Jab it
Here come the pins

Blood for face
Sweat for dirt
Three X's for the stone
To break this curse
A ritual's due
I believe I'm not alone
Shell of shotgun
Pint of gin
Numb us up to shield the pins
Renew our faith
Which way we can
To fall in love with life again
To fall in love with life again
To fall in love with life again
To fall in love
To fall in love
To fall in love with life again

So tell me
Can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?

Tell me
Can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine
And I'm pain free
You jab another pin
Jab another pin in me

No more pins in me
No more, no more pins in me
No more, no more pins in me
No more, no more, no more
No, no, no

General Comment:did anyone notice how it is the last song of the album? so for me it seems like its his final stand, he is/was trying to brake free out of his misery in any way (like stated before alcohol, suicide). and also notice how the next "new" metallica album is st. anger, which was produced while james was in rehab.
so this song is the last time we get to see the "old" james? like he was on the edge between giving up and living on, and he chose to live on? opinions anyone?

General Comment:I can see how people can assume that this song is about God and human suffering, but I don't think that's what it's about at all. I believe this song is about a guy who had an abusive childhood and who is having a conversation with himself. He is finding that he still suffers from the psychological trauma from being abused and that it's carrying over into his own family. "Just when all seems fine and I'm pain free, you jab another pin, jab another pin in me." This is meaning that when he thinks he is doing better and moving forward in life, those old scars resurface and drag him back down again, this happens with everyone who has experienced any kind of trauma. "Mirror, mirror upon the wall, Break the spell or become the doll." We've all do this from time to time, look into the mirror and talk to our reflection in order to figure something out. He is questioning whether or not he has the ability to heal himself of what had been done to him and move on. I also think that he has given up hope and is contemplating suicide in order to spare his family from the things that he's doing or the things he's afraid he may end up doing. There are many examples in the lyrics, but I don't feel like going through and explaining them all.

General Comment:this is one of metallica's best songs in my opinion. the lyrics are fantastic and a great parallel between god & human suffering. though i think hetfield has had some subpar metallica lyrics from time to time, mostly on the load + st anger albums, this is him at his best.

My Interpretation:I believe, and stop me when I roll off the rails here… but it tells about how we are the ‘toys at the hands of another,’ the playthings of a higher power. The voodoo dolls of a deity, whatever that may be for you. And the pins that it sticks in us are for the sins we commit. We are caught in a perpetual spiral of the creation of our own damnation. At least in our lifetime. The more we go awry, the more our lives become hell. There is a proposal in the chorus, ‘can we strip away so we may start again?’ And the answer of course, is yes. We can be fixed by the great Fixxxer. Three X’s for the stone, a symbolic focal point of the ritual that brings us closer to Him. The ritual due when you have nowhere else to turn to while floundering in the obscurity of your darkest hour. But it’s the interlude of the song where the most beauty lies. ‘To renew our faith which way can. To fall in love with life again.’ You’d have to fall out of love, you’d have to know the despair that comes from hating your own life in order to grasp the beauty of the image of falling in love with life once again. This song is among the most visceral in hard rock.

General Comment:I think this song is about people who blame and question God for the trials, tragedies and tribulations that is brought upon us.

General Comment:I believe this song refers to how people are raised in strict households. As they get older they need to escape from there problems so they drink, drinking helps them "Fall in love with life again". Also father must be a metaphor, God, The Government...etc. Just when you "escape" reality you come back feeling even worse "Just when all seems fine and all pain free Jab another Pin in me". Interesting song I must say.
