You cannot quit me so quickly
Is no hope in you for me?
No corner you could squeeze me
But I've got all the time for you love

The space between
The tears we cry is the laughter keeps us coming back for more
The space between
The wicked lies we tell to keep us safe from the pain
Will I hold you again?

These fickle fuddled words confuse me
Like will it rain today
We waste the hours with talking talking
These twisted games we're playing
We're strange allies
With warring hearts
What a wild-eyed beast you be
The space between

The wicked lies we tell that hope to keep us safe from the pain
Look at us spinning out in the madness of a roller coaster
You know you went off like the devil in the church
In the middle of a crowded room
All we can do my love

Is hope we don't take this ship down
The space between
Where you smile and hide
Is where you'll find me if I get to go
The space between
The bullets in our firefight
Is where I'll be hiding waiting for you

The rain that falls
Splashed in your heart
Ran like sadness down the window into your room
The space between
Our wicked lies is
The hope to keep us safe from pain

Take my hand
'cause we're walking out of here
Right out of here
Is all we need dear
The space between
What's wrong and right

Is where you'll find me hiding waiting for you
The space between your heart and mind
Is the space we'll fill with time
The space between
The tears we cry is the laughter keeps us coming back for more

The space between our wicked lies
Where we hope to keep safe from pain
The space between
The space between

Song Meaning:The Space Between is not just a song with a meaning. It is a concept. The abridged version goes like this:

Without pain there is no joy. They support each other like night and day do. Like spouses do, like heat and cold do. Without the counterpart the other ceases to exist also.

EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS HELD IN PLACE BY WHAT IT ISN'T.

If we lived on a planet with no water or moisture on it the word WET would not exist and therefore we would not have the word DRY either.

If I divorce you I am no longer a husband which stops you from being a wife.

The fresh cold spot on your sheet when you roll over is only cold because YOU are hot, not because it's actually cold. If you had hypothermia that sheet would warm you.

When do we miss school and our friends. In the summer. While in school we can't wait for summer.

Sex feels great right? But if you do it every hour of everyday it would get old and boring and not feel good anymore.

Chocolate cake is great unless you eat it for every meal.

It's the SPACE BETWEEN the sex, the cake, school, trips to vegas, that makes it so great. Without the space between, being Without, the not-ness, the absence of something, it loses it's value. That's why flowers are desirable and weeds not. You don't have to work and suffer for weeds so they don't have value to us. It's why we value gold and not aluminum. Aluminum is plentiful and gold not.
    Does that make sense?

So I think what Dave is saying is value the space between the joy which is tears; embrace the pains of the "not-ness" accept the "Doing without" because without out 'the lows' the 'highs' cant cycle back into your life.

Its the space between that makes all of the great things in life great.

    In my humble opinion.

General Comment:Each line is stands on it's own, but the sum of them describe people in relationships.

Favorite line: The space between the tears we cry is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more.

I think it's pretty clear that the meaning there is: it's the good times (laughter) that outnumber the bad (tears) that keep people together.

Song Meaning:Lyrics mean whatever you want them to mean. Here's what this song means to me.

-It's about two people in love who can't let go of each other just yet. - "You cannot quit me so quickly"
-One is married, the other is not. They realize they can't ever be together but they make time to fill the space between the moments in their lives. - "There's no hope in you for me, But I got all the time for you, love."
-They have to keep their relationship a secret, obviously. "The Space Between The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep safe from the pain"
-There's an age difference and they come from two different walks in life who, when they come together, ignite the fire in each others souls. "We're strange allies
With warring hearts What wild-eyed beast you be"
-It'll end, but they aren't sure when. "Will I hold you again? Will I hold..."
-They know it's wrong but they can't stop it. It's a war at home for him and she's empty and miserable. They turn to one another for comfort. He'll lose everything if their relationship is ever found out. "All we can do, my love Is hope we don't take this ship down"
-If he could change his situation, he'd go running to her. She knows this is true, which makes it all so sad. "The bullets in our firefight
Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you
    The rain that falls
    Splash in your heart
Ran like sadness down the window into..."
-So while they can, they'll enjoy this little time they have together and make the most of it.
    "Take my hand
'Cause we're walking out of here
    Oh, right out of here
Love is all we need here

    The Space Between
    What's wrong and right
Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you
    The Space Between
    Your heart and mine
Is the space we'll fill with time
    The Space Between..."

General Comment:To me, this is about a relationship that isn't quite working, despite how badly they want it to. "The space between" that he keeps referring to is the space between the bad and the good. On one hand, the couple is happy ("the laughter keeps us coming back for more") and on the other, the couple is unhappy, forced to lie to one another to make their relationship work and avoid fighting. "Will it rain today?" is him contemplating if it will be a bad day between the two. "Warring hearts" refers to their fighting, even though they love each other deeply. "Will I hold you again?" is him wondering if they will last even a day longer. There are many more references like these as well-- they're equally easy to interpret. This song perfectly describes a relationship I was once in and am still working to get over. I listen to it when I feel like delving back into those buried feelings-- Dave always has a way of helping me to do that.

My Interpretation:My take on this song is something like Peppermint's. Although I'm not sure I see it as a break up. I think its about patience. And about feeling strongly for someone who is afraid and so they put their guard up. Think about it.. if someone is always fights your love, you start wondering if you should keep giving it.. Your guard goes up too. Then you are both on some weird roller coaster that doesnt need to be.. if they would only just relax and enjoy the good with you! Yet as the one more sure about it all, the lyrics speak about how even though it becomes warring hearts and even if she may of freaked, "going off like the devil in the middle of a crowded room" at the base of his heart he knows she is just putting a wall because she is scared and thinks it will keep her "safe from the pain".

So, he's trying to be patient because he knows she's not the devil and hopes that eventually she'll trust and let his love touch her heart like "The rain that falls. Splash in your heart". Drives him nuts. He fights back sometimes too. Yet all in all, he feels sure enough to want to be patient and reassure her with words like ... "Take my hand.... we're walking out of here... (together, out of this scarey place). I got all the time for you, love... Love is all we need... (Im not going anywhere...) The space between .... Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you..."
In time we'll be okay cuz... "The Space Between, Your heart and mine, Is the space we'll fill with time..."

I feel this way about someone with their guard up. Don't know if it will work out, but my heart wants to show them I believe in them/us and see through the walls to a better place.. no matter how bad I do/want to fight back sometimes because when they act out and pull away.. it hurts. The first line of this song came to my mind tonight after a rough time... "You cannot quit me so quickly" .. sort of like saying .. Hey, I know it was a knee-jerk reaction, I know in the space you create between us, you will feel me and I will 'try' to wait for you there... But jeez.. you hurt me too and I dunno.. "but will I hold you again... " I'll try to be patient and wait.. we'll see how much I can take before it feels like a lost cause!!
-Sorry for the double post, I posted in the wrong place earlier.

General Comment:Lately this song reminds me of my ex. It makes me think of a two people who used to be madly in love but aren't together anymore. And the now they're friends, but there's still that same chemistry between them. Yet, they play "twisted games" with each other when they're together, anything to not acknowledge that there's still a connection between them ("wicked lies" "fickled, fuddled words confuse me, like 'will it rain today?'"). The song's perspective is from the person who realizes there's still love there despite their rough patches and differences, but he's too scared to say anything. So he's just waiting until his love comes around to acknowledge it too.

I feel like I'm going through that with my ex, because whenever we hang out (now that there's been "space between" our breakup) there's this chemistry still between us. But we try to keep things as just friends, but it's so hard when we get along so well like we used to. However, I'm the one waiting, too scared to speak my true feelings to him that I miss him and still love him, even though I know right now may not be the best time to be together. But I stick around as a friend, waiting and hoping the time may be right again for us to be together.

General Comment:I believe this song has a powerful message of lovers who are meant for each other eventually, but for the meantime life has other plans for them. When the time is right they will be together. There is love between the two, but only one is strong enough to truly let the other know. The other believes their strength is in hiding this love within, and so they are doing this. The one who sings the song is trying to let them know that what they have is real, and they shouldn't be afraid of the emotions..they will wait for them.
This song is the ringtone for my ex-boyfriend, whom I have loved from the start. We continuously find our paths back to one another, but now is not the time for us to be together. I have faith that we are meant for each other though. And although I may not stand still, I will wait for him. He is my heart.
