Lyrics for The Space Between as interpreted by Demau Senae

The Space Between Lyrics
You cannot quit me so quickly
Is no hope in you for me
No corner you could squeeze me
But I got all the time for you, love
The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

But will I hold you again?
These fickle, fuddled words confuse me
Like 'Will it rain today?'
Waste the hours with talking, talking
These twisted game we play

We're strange allies
With warring hearts
What wild-eyed beast you be
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

Will I hold you again?
Will I hold...

Look at us spinning out in
The madness of a roller coaster
You know you went off like a devil
In a church in the middle of a crowded room
All we can do, my love
Is hope we don't take this ship down

The Space Between
Where you're smiling high
Is where you'll find me if I get tickled
The Space Between
The bullets in our firefight
Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you
The rain that falls
Splash in your heart
Ran like sadness down the window into...
The Space Between
Our wicked lies
Is where we hope to keep safe from pain

Take my hand
'Cause we're walking out of here
Oh, right out of here
Love is all we need here
The Space Between
What's wrong and right
Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you
The Space Between
Your heart and mine
Is the space we'll fill with time
The Space Between...

Wow, I'm surprised to hear people thinking this is about a relationship that is breaking up or not going well.

I totally agree with Butterfly, where to me, it's about people who are with other people but who also are in love with each other...an affair. Just seems obvious to me in that way.

Especially this: The Space Between
What's wrong and right
Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you
The Space Between
Your heart and mine
Is the space we'll fill with time
The Space Between...

Wrong/Right..............Hiding/Waiting.....Our hearts/filled with 'time'....

And right above those lines about "take my hand 'cause we're walking out of here" is when they finally decide 'love is all we need' and they're going to ditch who they're with and finally get together.

All in all, just an amazing song that moves me to tears.

an awesome song. i love it so much.
i think its about somebody who broke off a relationship but knows that they still love each other.
n dave is saying that they can't braek apart. they can still be together even if they have to keep it a secret or if they can see each other much.
theres also allot of devil imagery in it.
maby they differ on their religions .
or possibly just the way they are.
i can realy relate to this song .

When I hear this song now, it means that there are two people who have truly found their soul mate. One of them is unavailabe, but the other is saying that they'll wait for them. The space between what's wrong and right is where you'll find me hiding waiting for you. Makes my heart smile.

I think this song is about a relationship breaking up.
"You cannot quit me so quickly"..is talking bout how one person is moving on, but the others still holding on to that person. They've had a lot of ups and downs in the relationship and he knows that, but theres also the good times hes remembering.."the space between the tears we cry, is the laughter that keeps us coming back for me." he knows it maybe over, but hes still in love. Even though their fighting now, he's remembering the good times, which was the space between the tears..

It may be a little cliche for this to be a favorite dave matthews band song, but it is my favorite dave matthews band song. I think Dave's vocals are absolutely b-e-a-utiful on this track.

I would say what the song means but everybody else here's pretty much made it clear.

none the less, pretty pretty song.

it seems to me to be about the worst parts of a relationship being worth it for all the good experiences... The space between the tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more. There are hard moments but it's the great parts that you remember, and in the end all you can do is hope that the stupid arguments and stuff don't "take this ship down".

Wow. This song fits the relationship I have with a girl EXACTLY. Every line in this song can be applied; if someone was video taping me this week, they'd have the perfect video for this song.

I just happened to have this song on my mp3 player when trying to wade through this really messy relationship, and it was such an amazing companion.

I just can't get over how much this song relates to me at this moment -- I've never had a song so profoundly speak to me. I really have to check out more DMB stuff... this song is amazing.

I think the Space Between described that ultimate middle ground everybody strives for in their relationship with people. If it trails off into some random extreme, it becomes unbalanced. I love this song because it so wonderfully written. Dave and his buds are awesome.

My personal interpretation of the song if very simple, and I think it goes along with what some people here have said: a sort of forbidden love. I think this is about a guy and a girl who may have had a romantic moment, but that shouldn’t have happened for some reason (eg. one of them was committed or something)…but I think the romantic moment between these two was real, as if there were really important feelings between the two of them, which is why the guy (assuming this is the “guy,” as Dave’s singing) says “you cannot quit me so quickly.”

“The space between the tears we cry is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more” – they suffer, but when they talk, they laugh, they have a great time, and that makes them want to be with each other in that romantic way more and more. But they have to lie about their true feelings because there’s still that obstacle – therefore: “the wicked lies we tell and hope to keep safe from the pain.” But then he wonders “will I hold you again?” and talks about the “fickle, fuddled words” confusing him, showing how they decided to leave that moment behind, and lie to themselves about those feelings by having everyday normal conversations where the “Like ‘Will it rain today?’” comes in.

Finally, the line “the space between what’s wrong and right is where you’ll find me waiting for you” pretty much sums up what I think of this song: it’s that small space of confusion between what’s wrong (because that shouldn’t be happening between them) and what’s right (because they really have these strong, amazing feelings for each other) is where she’ll find him (or viceversa), because it’s in that small space of confusion where they will be able to be together – as that romantic moment that had happened before. That’s the way I see it, anyway :)

My question would be, if this were about forbidden love, what do you think Sir Matthews is trying to say when he speaks of lies?
"The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell"
Probly one of my favorite quotes, but I digress.
I'd say he would be talking about someone he is currently involved with. Trying to make yourself stay happy with someone when another person is so close to you, is soo hard. The lies aren't necessarily lies, only because it's never talked about. You can't lie about something you don't talk about. All I know is, I love this song, and it really means a lot to me.
THANKS DAAAVE!

we have to look at the symbol of the big and little dipper.
their two ladels pouring into oneanother to understand the space between. like human beings who come to each other as one representing wrath, envy and unforgiveness and the other representing love grace and mercy. each designed to crash into one another. pour out their contents exchanging each others contents.
this is the process of salvation inwhich all mankind will go through throughout eternity until there is no longer any evil to exchange.

crash is two people crashing or meeting and pouring out their contents
so damn lucky is two parties crashing..
crush is being pressed out of your contents
space between is where the contents intermingle before entering into their prospective persons

wrath, envy, hatred and unforgiveness are exchanged with love grace mercy and forgiveness
warring hearts..

"The space between" is portrayed in many different ways in this song such as, The laughter that keeps them coming back for more, the bullets in their firefight, etc. Basically these people previously had such a pure love that it might have been a friendship. The person being sung about doesn't have any time for the other person, thus they are being ignored. Dave Matthews reminisces about how they would laugh, how they had so many memories but they were lost along the way. He doesn't want to get hurt ("safe from the pain") so he also stays away from the person who he used to be so close to but is now ignoring him and can't find time for him.
That's my take on it.

This song is about a relationship which is doomed in several aspects but the only thing thats held them together is their unconditional love. i think the song is for the lover whos walked out of the relationship and this guy is stil in love and knows all her weaknesses and pulling her again towards him by bringing back everything frm the past. they have lied to each other maybe cheated but havnt confessed but secretly both know "Our wicked lies
Is where we hope to keep safe from pain". its really beautiful how much one can relate to this song because im sure we all have been in curcumstances when you love someone you hate or hate someone you love and its so hard to let go because youv come too far to let go and your too attached to leave. every line and word of this song leaves such a great impact i cant even find one line and say its my fav !

Have you ever noticed that when people talk about past relationships, specially those that end up badly, they tend to highlight the bad moments?

to me, this amazing song is about this, its a couple that has a had an argument, and the singer is trying to look at the good that is his love whilst putting aside the current problem.

The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more

The argument in itself seems caused by a misunderstanding or bad choice of words (could Dave REALLY choose the wrong words? hard to say...)

"These fickle, fuddled words confuse me"

"Waste the hours with talking, talking
These twisted game we play"

The song keeps moving through several metaphors regarding good and bad, and how a difficult moment can make us forget wonderful times easily.

My favorite line is

We're strange allies
With warring hearts

I think it describes the sort of arrangement that can happen between people in a relationship, in hich argumetns ocurr constantly but love is present in someway or the other.

the closing verse is incredibly beautiful as well:

"the space between your heart and mine is space we'll fill with time"

its a statement, patience and understanding will eventually wear down this arguments and bring their hearts so close together that the only thing that will matter is their love.

Beautiful track, beautiful Lyrics.

DMB is one of the best things that have happened to music in the past 20 years...

I'm with SweetButterfly! It's about the unstoppable force of love that can cause a hurtful space. Sometimes circumstance won't allow you to follow your heart, so you're left with the haunting of its power. I had to let my love go for now with the shallow hope that love is all we'll need when the time is right....an affair to remember

Eulogy is almost right : "I think that the space between the two lovers isn't so much as social unacceptable as it is different. I think Dave might be refering to a difference between the two. Both of them traveling down their own road until one feels something towards the other. Considering the "warring hearts" or the differences between the two, the relationship is questionable and a challenge which causes the other to cringe at the idea or to turn from it. So, in a nuteshell, I think this song is about one person who is interested in another person who is so utterly different from them that the other doubts the potential of the relationship. But the "giver" is telling the "receiver" that he'll be waiting for them if they want to set the differences aside and to give it a chance. Through time, to develope love, to walk hand-in-hand out of the space between. "

The song was written by Dave who was murdered here in South Africa where they are from.
