Lyrics for The Space Between as interpreted by Demau Senae

The Space Between Lyrics
You cannot quit me so quickly
Is no hope in you for me
No corner you could squeeze me
But I got all the time for you, love
The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

But will I hold you again?
These fickle, fuddled words confuse me
Like 'Will it rain today?'
Waste the hours with talking, talking
These twisted game we play

We're strange allies
With warring hearts
What wild-eyed beast you be
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

Will I hold you again?
Will I hold...

Look at us spinning out in
The madness of a roller coaster
You know you went off like a devil
In a church in the middle of a crowded room
All we can do, my love
Is hope we don't take this ship down

The Space Between
Where you're smiling high
Is where you'll find me if I get tickled
The Space Between
The bullets in our firefight
Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you
The rain that falls
Splash in your heart
Ran like sadness down the window into...
The Space Between
Our wicked lies
Is where we hope to keep safe from pain

Take my hand
'Cause we're walking out of here
Oh, right out of here
Love is all we need here
The Space Between
What's wrong and right
Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you
The Space Between
Your heart and mine
Is the space we'll fill with time
The Space Between...

The song,if you look closely to the words, is about two people whose relationship is socially unacceptable. Like dating between two different ethnicities or two people whose ages are very different or even two homosexual people . For examble the caucasion man and African American woman in the video. Look "The space between what's wrong and right is where you'll find me hiding waiting for you". All of those relationships mentioned above are still looked down apon as WRONG in society and THAT is what the song's about.

I agree with star_watcher. If the video applies at all, then that makes total sense. Also note, the storm moves in on them, it rains, and then stops, and then dave is approached by a girl. What's up with that.

wow...that really makes sense, star watcher321...i never thought of it that way. i always just thought that "the space between the tears we cry is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more..." meant, like, all the [good] times that we hacve together outweigh the fights and the tears, hence, they, um...come back for more...???

I just heard this song and for the first time really listened to the lyrics closely.. I agree with Peppermints ' comments. It really described exactly what I am going through with my girlfriend that I love dearly... but we can't seem to change enough for each other to make it work out. However, from the lyrics I take with me the hope that it can. Thanks for your insight, Peppermint. And great song DMB!

I think that the space between the two lovers isn't so much as social unacceptable as it is different. I think Dave might be refering to a difference between the two. Both of them traveling down their own road until one feels something towards the other. Considering the "warring hearts" or the differences between the two, the relationship is questionable and a challenge which causes the other to cringe at the idea or to turn from it. So, in a nuteshell, I think this song is about one person who is interested in another person who is so utterly different from them that the other doubts the potential of the relationship. But the "giver" is telling the "receiver" that he'll be waiting for them if they want to set the differences aside and to give it a chance. Through time, to develope love, to walk hand-in-hand out of the space between.

this song is about a girl breaking up w/ a guy, and the guy pleading with her to changer her mind. "you cannot quit me so quickly." and telling her that things are bad now, but they have a lot of good times too. "the space between the tears we cry, is the laughter that keeps us comin back for more." I can totally relate to this whole song. dave is the man!!!

Re Cool Dandy saying it's sad (comment #7): of course, this is a very bittersweet song. Maybe that's why it's so good.

I feel, like many, that this song is about two people breaking up and one of them still loves the other.

"You cannot quit me so quickly
Is no hope in you for me
No corner you could squeeze me
But I got all the time for you, love"

To me, he is clearly talking to his/her girlfriend/boyfriend here. Dave is saying, you can't just get rid of me and what we had together just like that: "You cannot quit me so quickly". Then he says isnt' there still hope that we could get back together: "Is there no hope in you for me" and can't you find the time for me because I have the time for you: "No corner you could squeeze me, but I got all the time for you, love".

The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more

The space between when they are crying is filled with laughter and good moments. It is these moments that keep them talking to each other and it is these moments that keep the hope they will get back together alive.

The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

Here Dave is talking not about the space between the tears, but the space between the lies that tell about each other, like many people do when they break up and lie about the other person. The hope that they may get back together keeps them safe from truly believing what the other person is saying about them.

But will I hold you again?
These fickle, fuddled words confuse me
Like 'Will it rain today?'
Waste the hours with talking, talking
These twisted game we play

Here the singer is asking if they will ever get back together because he is not sure due to the "fickle, fuddled words" that they use. They "waste hours" talking about nonsense and small talk when he wants to talk about their relationship. She knows he wants to talk about them and he knows she knows. This ends up turning into a "twisted game" instead of them just getting it all off their chests.

We're strange allies
With warring hearts
What wild-eyed beast you be
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

Here the singer is saying that they are friends even though they have broken up, but their hearts are really the combatants. They are friendly with each other but his heart is fighting her heart to love him again.

Look at us spinning out in
The madness of a roller coaster
You know you went off like a devil
In a church in the middle of a crowded room
All we can do, my love
Is hope we don't take this ship down

This, to me, is the singer stating how the tension is catching up with them and coming to a head, "Look at us spinning...". They have an arguement in which, presumably, the female tells him it is over for good, "you know you went off like a devil...". But he wants them to still be friends because that means he will have a chance in the future, possibly, to get her back, 'Is hope we don't...".

The Space Between
Where you're smiling high
Is where you'll find me if I get tickled
The Space Between
The bullets in our firefight
Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you
The rain that falls
Splash in your heart
Ran like sadness down the window into...
The Space Between
Our wicked lies
Is where we hope to keep safe from pain

Here the singer is talking about how in between the arguements, lies, and the laughs is where he will be waiting and hoping.

Take my hand
'Cause we're walking out of here
Oh, right out of here
Love is all we need here
The Space Between
What's wrong and right
Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you
The Space Between
Your heart and mine
Is the space we'll fill with time
The Space Between...

The singer here is saying that they can leave that "space between" holding hands with love if she chooses, but in the meantime until she loves him again, the space between his heart and hers (his love and her non-love) is filled with time. Because all he can do is hope and wait.

It is a beautiful song by a very good songwriter about something we can all relate to. The "space between" is a place that we have all found ourselves at one time or another in our lives, unfortunately.

I was listening to this song on my ex-boyfriend's mp3 player as I was trying to fall asleep in a Minnesota motel in Northfeild. This song will always remind me of that, and that step forward we made into being regular friends. Awesome.

okay.. i guess this is one of those songs that.. i have to say.. can mean different things for different people. it is all in how you look at it. just because it means something for one person or something for another makes what they feel for it wrong in any way. The only way to REALLY know for sure w/o a doubt would be to ask the band... But it IS a beautiful song! I just guess it is one of those songs, though!

I know that everyone always says that a song will always have its own personal meaning, and of course that is true.
But if you are to read the lyrics to this song, its is clear that the "SPACE BETWEEN" is the beautiful times.
All the bad times are worth facing and getting though because these lovers have their "Space Between."
The "space between" the sad times has to be more powerful and deep to keep a relationship together.
(I agreed 100 percent with the poster named Peppermint.)

I see this totally different from everyone else. The singer/narrator is god, who has been forgotten by mankind. God can't be quit so easily, can't be squeezed in a corner, but we do it anyways. We waste time talking about god without really knowing him, praying for rain in words, but never truly feeling god in their lives. The rain falls as god's tears, falling into the heart of humankind. Both sides feel anguish, and humans act out in this anguish with lies, war...spinning out of control like a roller coaster. We are totally out of balance, balance that can only be found in God. God can wait (the space is filled with time) but hopes "we don't take this ship down" by destroying everything.

Read the lyrics with this in mind, it makes sense. I think the video supports this. Remember all the factories in the distance spewing smoke, and the almost heavenly light of the sky? Everyone is in the video, child and adult, people from every race. I think this song is much deeper than just a love song. Dave is saying we need to search inwards, find god in ourselves and the world, and come together. "Take my hand, cuz we're walking out of here. Love is all we need here." We need to walk with (not under) god, with (not above) other people. Peace and unity.
