Lyrics for The Space Between as interpreted by Demau Senae

The Space Between Lyrics
You cannot quit me so quickly
Is no hope in you for me
No corner you could squeeze me
But I got all the time for you, love
The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

But will I hold you again?
These fickle, fuddled words confuse me
Like 'Will it rain today?'
Waste the hours with talking, talking
These twisted game we play

We're strange allies
With warring hearts
What wild-eyed beast you be
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain

Will I hold you again?
Will I hold...

Look at us spinning out in
The madness of a roller coaster
You know you went off like a devil
In a church in the middle of a crowded room
All we can do, my love
Is hope we don't take this ship down

The Space Between
Where you're smiling high
Is where you'll find me if I get tickled
The Space Between
The bullets in our firefight
Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you
The rain that falls
Splash in your heart
Ran like sadness down the window into...
The Space Between
Our wicked lies
Is where we hope to keep safe from pain

Take my hand
'Cause we're walking out of here
Oh, right out of here
Love is all we need here
The Space Between
What's wrong and right
Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you
The Space Between
Your heart and mine
Is the space we'll fill with time
The Space Between...

My take on this song is something like Peppermint's. Although I'm not sure I see it as a break up. I think its about patience. And about feeling strongly for someone who is afraid and so they put their guard up. Think about it.. if someone is always fights your love, you start wondering if you should keep giving it.. Your guard goes up too. Then you are both on some weird roller coaster that doesnt need to be.. if they would only just relax and enjoy the good with you! Yet as the one more sure about it all, the lyrics speak about how even though it becomes warring hearts and even if she may of freaked, "going off like the devil in the middle of a crowded room" at the base of his heart he knows she is just putting a wall because she is scared and thinks it will keep her "safe from the pain".

So, he's trying to be patient because he knows she's not the devil and hopes that eventually she'll trust and let his love touch her heart like "The rain that falls. Splash in your heart". Drives him nuts. He fights back sometimes too. Yet all in all, he feels sure enough to want to be patient and reassure her with words like ... "Take my hand.... we're walking out of here... (together, out of this scarey place). I got all the time for you, love... Love is all we need... (Im not going anywhere...) The space between .... Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you..."
In time we'll be okay cuz... "The Space Between, Your heart and mine, Is the space we'll fill with time..."

I feel this way about someone with their guard up. Don't know if it will work out, but my heart wants to show them I believe in them/us and see through the walls to a better place.. no matter how bad I do/want to fight back sometimes because when they act out and pull away.. it hurts. The first line of this song came to my mind tonight after a rough time... "You cannot quit me so quickly" .. sort of like saying .. Hey, I know it was a knee-jerk reaction, I know in the space you create between us, you will feel me and I will 'try' to wait for you there... But jeez.. you hurt me too and I dunno.. "but will I hold you again... " I'll try to be patient and wait.. we'll see how much I can take before it feels like a lost cause!!
-Sorry for the double post, I posted in the wrong place earlier.

Lately this song reminds me of my ex. It makes me think of a two people who used to be madly in love but aren't together anymore. And the now they're friends, but there's still that same chemistry between them. Yet, they play "twisted games" with each other when they're together, anything to not acknowledge that there's still a connection between them ("wicked lies" "fickled, fuddled words confuse me, like 'will it rain today?'"). The song's perspective is from the person who realizes there's still love there despite their rough patches and differences, but he's too scared to say anything. So he's just waiting until his love comes around to acknowledge it too.

I feel like I'm going through that with my ex, because whenever we hang out (now that there's been "space between" our breakup) there's this chemistry still between us. But we try to keep things as just friends, but it's so hard when we get along so well like we used to. However, I'm the one waiting, too scared to speak my true feelings to him that I miss him and still love him, even though I know right now may not be the best time to be together. But I stick around as a friend, waiting and hoping the time may be right again for us to be together.

I believe this song has a powerful message of lovers who are meant for each other eventually, but for the meantime life has other plans for them. When the time is right they will be together. There is love between the two, but only one is strong enough to truly let the other know. The other believes their strength is in hiding this love within, and so they are doing this. The one who sings the song is trying to let them know that what they have is real, and they shouldn't be afraid of the emotions..they will wait for them.
This song is the ringtone for my ex-boyfriend, whom I have loved from the start. We continuously find our paths back to one another, but now is not the time for us to be together. I have faith that we are meant for each other though. And although I may not stand still, I will wait for him. He is my heart.

I think hes saying that relationships are going to have down points. The space between these downpoints are what keep two people together.

The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more

YouConn: Yeah, I agree. Everyday seemed too commercial for the band. But this song itself is great - I heard it first on The Gorge, which has to be my favorite live album, and these guys always make a song different with each performance. The studio version of this song hardly compares with the live one.

i think this song is about two people who are pulled apart by distance and even though when they are together everything is perfect and they make each other laugh and are completely happy, when they are away the distance kills and makes them doubt, fight, cry, and talk and talk about everything but never get anywhere(waste the hours with talking, these games we play), he just hopes they don't fail, b/c things seem so hard being apart that maybe she thinks it isn't worth it, he doesn't want the relationship to fail b/c he knows how happy they are together, even though its shit being apart everything to him is worth it in the end and he doesn't want this ship to go down. great song.

"The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep us safe from the pain"

This part can be interpretated as a secret and unforbideen relationship
as well as the little lies that you say, day by day, just to make the other person happy. Because we all know that the truth is not always the best way. You can go with the tough truth to everywhere, you have to negociate some things just to make the realtionship works...

This song holds a special meaning cause it describes ME!! The LOVE of my life gave me this song to litsen to and it describes our FORBINDDEN relationship. "The space between what's wrong & right is where you will find me hiding waiting for you" I live by that and hope that the "time" will be right for us some day.

And that is also what the whole theme of the album Everyday is about--every single song. Also the Lilywhite Sessions. A message in a bottle really. Everyday was just a more uplifting take on the theme of Lilywhite.

They both know what they saw. They both couldn't quite grasp it until it was done. And they know they are in it together, forever, although physically apart. There were no words exchanged, just left with something that no words can explain. Give and take. You can't just walk away. Acknowledge it. Not forbidden, just unfinished. There were no words exchanged at all, but just a knowing. Spending time thinking in words and engaging in conversation fills the space of time (every day life), until they can reach the divine. Get it?

This is about physical space...seeing, feeling, knowing, leaving. Time will pass, and the two will go through time knowing, believing, and having witnessed it. And they will both wait. He is telling her she had better. You can run, but you can't hide.

I think this song is about daves relationship between him and God, about how he feels right after his sister was murdered. I know the timeing is off from when she died and the song was written but i think they sound like they are hand in hand

I think this song was written from the prospective of the guy's last-ditch attempt to convice his partner that their relationship is not beyond redemption. I get the impression his partner has already yielded to what seems like a hopeless situation, whilst he is eager to confront the hopelessness and prove that he is what she needs. Some of the most profound lyrics DMB has written in this one!!

Wow, I love this song because of how well I can relate to it. "The Space Between What's wrong and right. Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you" is symbolic of a relationship that is not accepted in society. 'Hiding' their love is the only option this couple faces due to either age difference, ethnicity, homosexuality, etc. They must wait for the right time to be together although the love they share won't wait. "The wicked lies we tell. And hope to keep us safe from the pain" Since they refuse to wait, they must keep it very secretive and lie to protect themselfs from the outside world. In a perfect world, they'd be the perfect couple but since there is no such thing as a perfect world, they must deal with the consequences of their situation. And dealing with such makes them realize how crazy they are for eachother and how they are willing to put it all on the line just to be together. And that is true love.

Eulogy is almost right : "I think that the space between the two lovers isn't so much as social unacceptable as it is different. I think Dave might be refering to a difference between the two. Both of them traveling down their own road until one feels something towards the other. Considering the "warring hearts" or the differences between the two, the relationship is questionable and a challenge which causes the other to cringe at the idea or to turn from it. So, in a nuteshell, I think this song is about one person who is interested in another person who is so utterly different from them that the other doubts the potential of the relationship. But the "giver" is telling the "receiver" that he'll be waiting for them if they want to set the differences aside and to give it a chance. Through time, to develope love, to walk hand-in-hand out of the space between. "

The song was written by Dave who was murdered here in South Africa where they are from.

I'm with SweetButterfly! It's about the unstoppable force of love that can cause a hurtful space. Sometimes circumstance won't allow you to follow your heart, so you're left with the haunting of its power. I had to let my love go for now with the shallow hope that love is all we'll need when the time is right....an affair to remember

Have you ever noticed that when people talk about past relationships, specially those that end up badly, they tend to highlight the bad moments?

to me, this amazing song is about this, its a couple that has a had an argument, and the singer is trying to look at the good that is his love whilst putting aside the current problem.

The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more

The argument in itself seems caused by a misunderstanding or bad choice of words (could Dave REALLY choose the wrong words? hard to say...)

"These fickle, fuddled words confuse me"

"Waste the hours with talking, talking
These twisted game we play"

The song keeps moving through several metaphors regarding good and bad, and how a difficult moment can make us forget wonderful times easily.

My favorite line is

We're strange allies
With warring hearts

I think it describes the sort of arrangement that can happen between people in a relationship, in hich argumetns ocurr constantly but love is present in someway or the other.

the closing verse is incredibly beautiful as well:

"the space between your heart and mine is space we'll fill with time"

its a statement, patience and understanding will eventually wear down this arguments and bring their hearts so close together that the only thing that will matter is their love.

Beautiful track, beautiful Lyrics.

DMB is one of the best things that have happened to music in the past 20 years...

This song is about a relationship which is doomed in several aspects but the only thing thats held them together is their unconditional love. i think the song is for the lover whos walked out of the relationship and this guy is stil in love and knows all her weaknesses and pulling her again towards him by bringing back everything frm the past. they have lied to each other maybe cheated but havnt confessed but secretly both know "Our wicked lies
Is where we hope to keep safe from pain". its really beautiful how much one can relate to this song because im sure we all have been in curcumstances when you love someone you hate or hate someone you love and its so hard to let go because youv come too far to let go and your too attached to leave. every line and word of this song leaves such a great impact i cant even find one line and say its my fav !

"The space between" is portrayed in many different ways in this song such as, The laughter that keeps them coming back for more, the bullets in their firefight, etc. Basically these people previously had such a pure love that it might have been a friendship. The person being sung about doesn't have any time for the other person, thus they are being ignored. Dave Matthews reminisces about how they would laugh, how they had so many memories but they were lost along the way. He doesn't want to get hurt ("safe from the pain") so he also stays away from the person who he used to be so close to but is now ignoring him and can't find time for him.
That's my take on it.

we have to look at the symbol of the big and little dipper.
their two ladels pouring into oneanother to understand the space between. like human beings who come to each other as one representing wrath, envy and unforgiveness and the other representing love grace and mercy. each designed to crash into one another. pour out their contents exchanging each others contents.
this is the process of salvation inwhich all mankind will go through throughout eternity until there is no longer any evil to exchange.

crash is two people crashing or meeting and pouring out their contents
so damn lucky is two parties crashing..
crush is being pressed out of your contents
space between is where the contents intermingle before entering into their prospective persons

wrath, envy, hatred and unforgiveness are exchanged with love grace mercy and forgiveness
warring hearts..

My question would be, if this were about forbidden love, what do you think Sir Matthews is trying to say when he speaks of lies?
"The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell"
Probly one of my favorite quotes, but I digress.
I'd say he would be talking about someone he is currently involved with. Trying to make yourself stay happy with someone when another person is so close to you, is soo hard. The lies aren't necessarily lies, only because it's never talked about. You can't lie about something you don't talk about. All I know is, I love this song, and it really means a lot to me.
THANKS DAAAVE!
