Lyrics for One as interpreted by fennsk

One Lyrics
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Land mine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

I think you need to wake up. Have you listened to 'St. Anger'? How about 'Garage Inc'? 'Load', maybe?

It is doubtful, because had you listened to them, you would have noticed that they are piss poor and took about 15 minutes to write. These albums would have been looked down upon, with scorn, had they been released by some piss-ant underground rock band, but for Metalica to release this kind of garbage, after such seminal works as 'Kill em all', '...and justice for all' and 'Ride the Lightning', is unforgivable.

Metallica simply don't care about making good music anymore.

(Before you point it out, I know that they didn't write the songs on 'Garage,Inc', but it also sounds like they didn't practice them either...)

wow I'm not one for metal, but this song truly kicks ass, and Metallica is definitely the greatest the metal band ever. The guitars in the begining of this song is metallica's finest momment

and the lyrics really promote the evil of what war can bring to a man. i love the gunshot and chopper noises before the guitars as well, then how it segues into the lyrics. its like that is when the main character lost everything was in that 15 seconds before the song, then the lyrics tell his story

This one of the only songs of Metallica I can appreciate. Accept for the solo. I don't like Hammet's soloing on this one.
But the thing with this song is exactly that: the solo is about the only thing off the song i don't really like; it's messy. The other songs are garbage, except for the solo's. Most of them anyway.

Through "One" I (once again) discovered how great Metallicas music is. I used to listen to them when i was younger. I found the video "One" a few years ago and thought it was great! exspecially the 2nd part of the song when they speed up after the machine gun-like drumming. After i saw the video i started to listen to metallica again. I love the 5 first albums they made. Well the 6th album has some nice songs as well.

Ive heard somewhere that the song "One" is based on the movie "Johnny got his gun". I want to see that movie. The musicvideo "one" is very powerful. The combination of WW1 scenes and 80's-90's metal music works fine :-) exspecially in this very emotional song.

This is Metallica at its best! And James looked cooler than ever :) The musicvideo is a must-see :o)

It's about the injustices of communism, in addition to visual imagry from "Johnny got his gun." Look at the lyrics and you can almost immediately relate it to the strangling restraints of Communism.

First off, the guitar parts in this song are freaking awesome! Now the meaning, this song is about a guy going to war, coming back not being able to communicate with the world. He is on life support and he doesnt even know if he is alive or dead. If he is alive, he wishes that God will take him. The womb he speaks of is the life support ("It pumps life that I cant feel") The reason its called "One" to me is because he is now cut off from the world and is now one with himself.

At first I didn’t know about the connection to "Johnny Get Your Gun", but I knew it was about war. The lines...

[Fed Through the Tube That Sticks in Me
Just like a Wartime Novelty
Tied to Machines That Make Me Be]

...were incredibly saddening to me. The first time I heard this, I could have almost cried. You can just see a man in the hospital hooked up to the machines and singing this song. At 4:37, all hell breaks loose in this song, and it seems very angry, how someone would feel lying in a bed with 60 years to live like this.

I know this song is about "Johnny Got His Gun", but every time I hear it I can't help but think its about depression.. He talks about having no arms or legs and no way to see, hear or speak.. I always think about feeling like nobody listens and therefore you are silent.. trapped... As in the lines "Body my holding sell" It sounds as if he feels trapped within his own existance..

I know this song is about the movie/novel "Johnny Got His Gun", but I think there is much more meaning behind it than just that. I think this song is about what happens to a person (mentally or physically) who experiences a tragic event that is life changing. The man being crippled by a landmine being the symbolic tragic event. It can represent anything though. The loss of a loved one, a tough breakup, any life altering event.

i really hate when people say metallica sucks now, or that theyve "sold out". they've lasted this long, and they're still awesome. you all think you're "musicians" with your shitty little garage bands and distortion pedals. stop criticizing such legends that you can never compare to and go get a job you worthless douchebags.

a great song by a great band. to ianthomas360 and guiffporn, the character blinks 'kill me' in morse code. they have the snippet in the video. i also agree with breakingthegirl. people who say metallica have 'sold out' are complete idiots who if put through the same shit that metallica have been through in the last few years, will self destruct
