Lyrics for One as interpreted by fennsk

One Lyrics
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Land mine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

I think that when the song starts off, the guy that got "blown up" is somewut fine and as the song goes on he is started to die off a lil at a time. At the end when they r jamming out is right before he croaks out, then when the song is over just like that, so is he.

METALLICA IS THE FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

like marqmaltic, i also gave the lyrics to this song to my english teacher in high school. he was a bastard, i hated him. i also gave him the lyrics to the god that failed. that son of a bitch thought i wrote it, and i let him think that for about five minutes. he was tripping, thinking i was smart or something. then i told him a band called metallica wrote it. i almost got into deep shit over that.

this song is my absolute favorite out of them all. over nothing else matters, fade to black, sandman, master and to live is to die, this is the one. literally. the solo is sick, and the guitar riff just before the drums change the tempo is a work of art.

I've never seen/read "Johnnie Got His Gun", so I'll have to take your (those of you who have seen/read it) word for it as far as that meaning goes. But this song reminds me of World War I. With the new shit like artillery and gas, nearly all of the veterans who returned alive were completely insane. I think the "landmine" could be interpreted as whatever it was that made them lose their mind.
Landmine Has Taken My Sight
Taken My Speech
Taken My Hearing
Taken My Arms
Taken My Legs
Taken My Soul
Left Me with Life in Hell

I think that the physical wounds left by this mine could also be interpreted as the mental wounds that these soldiers suffered as a result of shell shock.

It is no doubt that this song is about a war....but can anyone explain to me what the song title "one" is about?

Ondjage, I believe "One" refers to the main character in the book, more or less forgotten and ignored by the rest of the world. He's in his own world now, no sight, no hearing, no speech...nothing. He is the only one. Also if anyone remembers from the book, at the end he actually figured out a way to try to communicate with the staff at the hospital by banging his head on his pillow in morse code. Do you think that this song could possibly be a semi tribute to the original headbanger?

metallica's second best song, but read the book, Johnny got his gun, to get a better understanding of the horrors of war and therefore, a better grip on this amazing song :)

"Johnny Got His Gun" is possibly the most depressing movie of all time.

I recently bought a Japanese DVD of it on eBay.

This song perfectly captures the horror of the subject matter.
And it kicks ass of course.

I think that "And Justice For All" is their best album. Even though every album up to Garage, Inc. kicked serious ass, this one is my favorite.

Well everybody has the meaning right - it's about a soledeir left with no arms or legs and no senses besides touch. I beleive the song is called "One" because of the following extract from the book "Johnny got His Gun".

How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to ONE shot. But if he does win, you'll beleive it because ONE in a million still leaves ONE. If I'd read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn't beleive it, cos it's a million to ONE. But a million to ONE always leaves ONE. I'd never expect it to happen tome because the odds of it happening are a million to ONE. But a million to ONE always leaves ONE. ONE.

I think that should clear it up for ya.

They haven't sold out, but they still managed to lose all musical credibility.

While they have never changed, in order to pull in a wider audience, they do seem to have become very lazy, content to sit on their mountains of money, putting little, if any, thought into anything they have released, since their self-titled album.

While they are still great, live, they now serve only as a nostalgia act and a reminder of how great they once were and will never be again...
