Lyrics for One as interpreted by fennsk

One Lyrics
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Land mine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

Metallica kicks ass. This song especially kicks ass. Folks, it don't get any better than this. This is a classic song and I am proud to say that Metallica is my favorite band. Even though they... kind sold out if thats what you would call it... they still wrote kick ass songs, and at the end of the day, that's all that really counts... right?

hold my breath as i wish for death...i feel tha metallica pretty much describes what that would be like in this mellow/adrenaline-pumping song based on the move "Johnny Got His Gun"... wicked song and one of metallica's best

If you're an aspiring musician of any sort, this song has to truely inspire you. Great great song. I can listen to this every night and not get tired of it. The video is amazing, too. This song is musical talent at it's peak, without a doubt.

Screw the lyrics for meaning. Forget the words and listen to the music. The contrast of the mellowed, almost resigned beginnings to the anger and pain as it draws to a close... Throw in the speed and madness of the solo, and the feelings are pretty much conveyed. The lyrics just set the scene... Anyway - an amazing song that gets better every time you hear it, and one of the best solos you'll hear in a Metallica song. Brilliant stuff.

For all those who said Metallica sold out, to quote Jason:
"Yes, we sell out. Every night of every concert of every tour." or something close that, can't remember. But the point is, they didn't sell out. Also, staleph1sh, Jaymz just turned 39 recently, so they ain't old. (unlike the Rolling Stones who are now older than most stones.) As for mellowing out, they will never mellow out. Just cuz they don't play a thousand miles a minute through every song they right anymore doesn't mean their getting soft. The loose and raw power on Load and ReLoad is still a bit ahead of the time kinda like this song. One is and will always be one of the best damn song ever written by anybody.

This song is like the book. It's calm, then it gets a little faster / Joe realizes he is in trouble, then the song gets way fast / Joe wants death and can't get the nurses and doctors to listen, then it just stops / Joe dies. This song (like The Thing That Should Not Be) is so much better after reading the book. But in The Thing's case, the short stories. "One" just plain kicks ass...

This song is great. This was before they sold their souls. Metallica must sit in their mansions listening to this and thinking "Wow, were we really that good once?" How the Hell did they go from this to St. Anger? Metallica is a joke that just isn't funny anymore.

does anyone else get sick from sadness when watching the video, i have yet to see "johnny got his gun" or read it, but i want to so badly. but still the way they take clips from the movie and fit it into their video seems to intensify the whole story.

Read the story first, the film isn't really very good.

Metallica kicks ass. This is my favourite Metallica songs and one of my favourite songs ever. The video was stunning and it was really effective when they used scenes from Johnny Got His Gun. It's about being severly injured in war and not being able to communicate or do anything and just wanting to die.

"One" is one of the greatest songs ever written by one of the greatest bands who ever existed. This song is a great example of their talent.

My friend and I learned this song...I play rhythm guitar/vocals and he plays lead guitar. We're having trouble findin a drummer that we like and a bassist, too. It's the greatest song to cover ever. My favorite part is when it gets to "darkness..." and then "landmine..." and the solo after that. I fucken love playin that part. The palm-muted triplets kick my fucking ass. And so does Metallica.

This song's beginning guitar is awesome.
I think it's about an old man after war. Or it could be just about an old man and the life he lived. That could be his "war". Now he's all weak, and he's waiting to die. So his war was his life, which didn't serve him well.
Deepness bitch.

When I was in High School I gave this song to a teacher as we were studying war poetry. She now uses this song in her ciriculum. She also uses wherever I may roam for the book "Into The Wild". She was a strick ass teacher too. I really think we opened her up to different types of poetry. Metallica poetry.

Like Margmalactic, my history teacher loves this song. In fact, the first time I saw the video was in his class. (we were learning about WWI)
Anyway, this song is a milestone of metal. Absolutely incredible. One of those songs that cannot be turned down, only up. Headbanging glory.

This song is brilliant, but the solo, please, it is not the best ever. In fact, it is quite stupid.
Fast does not equal good.
Well done to the boys though.

This song, i cant even say it in words how awsome it is... it is by far my favorite metallica song, even though i love every fuckin metallica song, this one is my all time favorite, and i mean really anyone who doesnt understand the basic idea of this song is really deaf or stupid, the lyrics alone explain how its about a kid who goes to war and gets naded then they think his in a coma or something to that affect and all he can do is think and he wants to die etc, almost positive it was based off "billy got his gun" and ehh, its great. Metallica Owns.
