Lyrics for One as interpreted by fennsk

One Lyrics
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Land mine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

Wow the guitars at the beginning are just brilliant and the last solo is heavenly though its the same as the one in Ozzy Osbourne's Mr Crowley just on a different scale.

Tell you what if any other band did a song about a former soldier who got blown to bits I probably wouldn't bother listening to it cos I'm sure it would suck. When I heard this It became my favorite song on And Justice for all and the album had alot of good songs

Basically the song is about a former soldier who has had his limbs blown off and has lost his senses like hearing eyes and all and now he is wishing he would just die. Poor Bastard if I where in his state I would wish I where dead too lol

Once again very good song

Johnny Got his Gun (the book and the movie) are incredible. Dalton Trumbo heard this story of a young man who was nothing but a slab of meat so to speak (nothing but a torso and head much like the character) who was damaged in the war. The story is based on the first world war and was ready to be printed and copyrighted near the start of world war two. Only one factual error offsets the book from the song: the song mentions:

Land mine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

however, in the story, Joe Bonham is disfigured by(I'm positively sure)a mortar shell.
Regardless, the two relate well and the book and movie are both worth checking out.

just how it feels to be like that...
I'm imagining it but couldn't take longer.

I would just choose to die, maybe.

It's based off of Johnny got his gun, when he gets his mouth, ears, eyes, and nose blown to pieces.

This song is very infulential. It also make's alot more sence if you watch the fil "Johnny get your gun". It is about a Guy that goes to war and get's caught in a bombing. He loses all of his main limbs. His face, Arm's and legs. They choose to keep him alive, Think about it he can't speak,Listen or smell.
He has one sence which is touch.

All he can do Is think, He dosen't know when he is awake or dreaming as he can't see or hear.

This is about a soldier that lost all senses and limbs from a land mine, he wants out of the jail that has become his sad existence but can't even kill himself or tell someone to kill him to put him out of his misery. That subject was actually the main character of Dalton Trumbo's anti-war novel 'Johnny Got His Gun'.... wow, some of you got some mean imagination with your interpretations!!

I'm much more of a classic rock guy--probably a total wimp to any real metal head.

But, hey, what can I say about this song?

Its lyrics and meaning are absolutely profound and can be atken literally reflecting the "johnny" book or taken figuratively as others have mentioned. I really relate as I'm finally coming out of a 3 year depression.

And the music!!! The intonation, etc of the lead singer (see, I don't even know his name) is emotional and you really feel pain when you here it.

The way it goes form the sing song calm beat of a depressed guy plodding thru glum thoughts to the total frustration, rage, etc in the remainderis uncanny. This lead MUST have personal experience with mental illness, or he's just an incredibly insightful genius!

The dual guitar solo thing is just incredible thought the song does tend to sound at the end like they couldn't figure out where to cut it off, but hey no one is perfect.

i was suprised to learn that one is alot like "the call of ktulu"
they got the idea for "the call of ktulu" from a book
simalar to one but in both books they both just lie in bed lifeless but active
with ktulu originaly cthulu it is a book about this monstorous... thing lol lying at the bottom of the pacific sea and some other stuff but maybe metallica is trying to say something maybe they feel hopeless and some how knew that some of there fans UNGREATFUL BASTARDS! would turn on them i have been a metallica fan all the way! doesn't matter how bad people think there albums are

It's not only the movie.James wanted to write a song about his own self...he feels as though a landmine took all he had...arms,legs,eyes,ears,etc.He wanted to show what it is to be lonely and not just literally...lonely in like u and yourself...now and forever...no way of changing the situation. This is my favorite song and i can relate to it perfectly.

I have a DVD where all of Metallica's songs they've released are pn one DVD. Lars Ulrich was talking about the song. He says that the song was mainly James's idea, pretty much about what it could be like to be some sort of basket case. They later found a book and then a movie of "Johnny Got His Gun". When listening to this song and watching the film clip, it makes me think to myself that is NOT what I ever want to turn out to be, just about more than anything else in life. It's worser than death, I'd rather be buried alive than be someone who is alive but with no arms, legs, hearing etc.

the first time i heard this song, i thought it was about the tragic demise of cliff burton. now that i take into account the whole "johhny got his gun" crap, i now think that the story of the cripples soldier is metaphorical of the cliff burton death or else any other tragedy that happened to the band, because i don't think "it's just about this one dude who stepped on a landmine and got his face blown off" is not good enough an explanation. it's unlikely of metallica to have such a great song be so "one" dimensional

Their poor friend(or someone they saw and decided to write about) that went to war and came back(hence the beginning firing and helicopter) shot. All his limbs were taken from him and he wishes he could die. He feels like there is no god, or that he did something wrong.
