Lyrics for #34 as interpreted by Demau Senae

#34 Lyrics
Oh my head lay back on the seating
Been so tired throw away my surrounding
Like the sun and moon take for granted
Soon we move through the flood and we fade away
Lie about it
Cry about it
We'll be ok
Lean upon me
I'll lean upon you
We'll be ok
Oh I lay myself at your feet laughing
Hope mine eye made of the soul choir
Lean upon me
I'll lean upon you
We'll be ok
Lie about it
Cry about it
Soon fade away
Lie about it
Cry about it
We'll be ok
Lean upon me
I'll lean upon you
We'll be ok

Dave wrote this as just an instrumental song but soon after it was finished a friend of his, Miguel Valdez, passed away so he dedicated the song to him.

I've never heard it with words but it was a good song to dedicate because even the music sounds like a peaceful memory. You can just hear it. It's like a theme song to you sitting and thinking of happy times before, and then how much you really miss them. The words don't say the same, so I'd like to hear how they're used. I really need to go to his concert NOW....

This song didn't start out as an instrumental...it had words. The man he dedicated it to helped me write it, and after he died, Dave never sang the words. Well, that's what I've read. It's a beautiful instrumental, it reminds me of Satellite in some ways.

im sorry, but ill have to dissagree with Gena. i believe this song, and most of the songs on its album Under The Table and Dreaming, were dedicated to dave matthews sister, Anne, who had just died. this song "#34" is called so because she was 34 when she died. I have herd the version w/ lyrics, and it is very clear that it is about a deciesed person. acctually, on the album case, it says in plane print, "in memory of anne."

uhh okay, well this song is about Miguel Valdez. It definitely isnt about Anne. It is called #34 only because the band could not come up with a name for the song. Usually, if the band cannot think of a name for a song, they ask their sound man, Fenton. And if Fenton can't think of anything, they leave the song name as the number in which they wrote the song chronologically. Hence, #36, #40 and #41.

iamdrummer88 is not quite sure what he is talking about...it is #34 because of the number in which it was written as previously stated...and books are dedicated to people all the time doesn't mean that they are about that person, so yes the album is dedicated to dave's sister but not every song is in memory of her

Drummer again I reiterate the fact, research research research! I myself am under the premise that #34 was written for Anne. But it's open to interpretation, but I'm not going to press my belief on what the song's about on others. You are right that the album was dedicated to Anne, but not every song on it has to do with her! Your under the idea that since the album's dedicated to Anne, that every song listed on the album is about Anne. Sorry my friend, but you are sadly mistaken. So I say to you in all friendlieness, RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH!

Oh yeah and Gena's right as well. The song's were given the number that it corresponded with (34 was the thirty fourth song). This was done when Dave and the band were all stumped on what to name it. They asked Fenton, and if he couldn't think of one, this was the result. Dave also asks his sound guy for assistance in naming songs.

i love how you all missinterprate my words... i said most, not all. i don't think all of the songs are about her, for one thing, ants marching was already made before hand, so that would not make any snese. I'm talking about songs like typical situation, dancing nancies, lover lay down, and #34. I apologies for the usage of "most"

Iamdrummer88 you really need to do some research like Squuge said and same with others on here. check out www.dmbalmanac.com sometime.

Infact there were NO songs dedicated to Anne from the album. Just the Album itself was dedicated to the Memory of Anne. This show here http://dmbalmanac.com/tourshowset.asp?id=453055416&tid=64&where=1994 was dedicated to Anne. It was a Dave and Tim show. If you ever get into collecting live cds. and you come across you will hear dave say "This show is dedicated to my sister Anne who just recently died"

If you look in the Under the Table and Dreaming lyric book inside the CD case, it says "For Miguel Valdez," Dave's friend whom passed away before the album was released. And the song originally had lyrics then was made into an instramental. But I think that the music speaks these lyrics by itself...such an awsome song!

I left something out...I'm not sure if the song was, in fact written about Valdez though. He could have just dedicated it to him. And it very well could be about his sister Anne.

the song was written by Dave Carter, and Haines Fullerton. Miguel Valdez was a percussionist who sat in with the band on occasion. All songs on UTTAD were written before the studio sessions. So were most of Crash's songs. Research, research, research.

On a completely different note, are any other musically inclined people out there confused about the time signature of this piece? I'm thinking the riff is 3 measures of 9/8, but it's really strange.

Excuse me for breaking up the argument about why this song was written, about which I have no idea.

its a great song either way! But i do like the words added. It seems like it is about someone who had something like cancer and where he knew they were going to die, and just all the emotions that lead up to it.

The words remind me of someone who is falling apart emotionally. It makes me think of when you get so tired and stressed that you can't move and all you want to do is cry. The music is absolutely gorgeous and it makes you think, not about anything in particular, but just think.

Beautiful song! Check out dmbalmanac for other words as well!

Interesting how this album Under the Table and Dreaming debuted on the charts at #34.

-Food for thought
