Jup this song is about suicide, and maybe metallica have had letters form people deciding NOT to kill them selfs, but they also had thousand of letters from parents saying this song could be the push that will let their child to commit suicide ((Im dutch sorry bout my crappy english))

Jesus H Christ!!!!!! We all know that this song is about suicide, but what every one should be talking about is the whole deep down meaning behind the lyrics. This song ain't just about suicide, it's about expressing the thoughts of someone who is thinking about killing himself. A man who is lost in himself and not in the real world. Everybody thinks about suicide when the outside world is beating you down. This is about his own self beating him down and he doesn't know how to cope with it. The lyrics really get inside of the head of a sad and lonely man who lives only in his own head and cannot deal with his own insanity and finds the one true way out. Suicide. Damn people look a little bit deeper into the lyrics and what they are saying to you.

Great song, obviously dealing with suicide. I remember going to a youth group meeting when I was a wee lad, and being forsed to watch a tape on "the evils of heavy metal" and how "rock and roll is Satan's tool" and all that general crap. They took example of this song in particular, playing it the song and scrolling the words and the screen karaoke-style. I also remember the entire group, preachers and all, staring at me gape-mouthed when I was absentmindedly singing along.....lol, that was some great shit!

Okay, I have several things to say...
Metallican41: You have some nerve calling Metallica's lyrics weak. And Fade to Black is NOT all over the place. It's about suicide. Yes, the band's equipment was stolen but the song is about suicide, and severe depression.
Seven: I'm not going to call you a poser because you might not be, but if you listen to Metallica, get you albums straight. Fade to Black is on Ride the Lightning, not And Justice For All. And Justice For All is my fav album though.
osu_cowboy2000: Okay, how could Jaymz have written a song about Cliff's death when he was still alive? The song To Live Is To Die is about Cliff's death. Almost all of it is just instrumental but the quote that Jaymz says is in fact Cliff's.
