Lyrics for Fade To Black as interpreted by fennsk

Fade To Black Lyrics
Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things are not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filing me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now He's gone

No one but me can save myself, but it to late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death Greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye

obviously the song is about suicide. Everyone knows the background by now.

This is one of my all time favs. It's not only a beautifully orchestrated piece, but it means a lot to me. Helped me through some damn rough times. I've actually been thinking of getting a tatt with a few lines from this song.. a little reminder that thing's will get better.. just gotta work and fight for it. It's a dog eat dog world out there..

Regardless of how/why they wrote it, here's what it means to me: this is the feeling i had after coming down from my best LSD trip. During the trip, I encountered "god" for the first time, everything in my life and in the universe made sense. after that trip faded away, the peace & knowledge that i had found drifted further away. nothing else mattered. without that insight it was difficult to live my old boring life. "need the end to set me free" was like jim morrison's "break on through". things weren't what they used to be, missed ONE (i.e. the one true reality) inside of me. emptiness is filling me (i.e. the buddhist notion of "emptiness"). "I was ME but now he's gone"; I was one with god (so to speak) but that feeling is now lost. like "don't fear the reaper", the song is probably not about psychedelics. but that doesn't mean that it can't be.

First i'd just like to say this is one of my all time favorite songs, PERIOD! and definatly the best thing metallica has ever contributed to the musical world. as for the meaning, I think it's about completly giving up all hope on life, accepting that things will never be better, and finding peace in death. you lyrics to this song really moved me, The first time i heard it i nearly cryed. and the instrumental half is just amazing! it's a shame they haven't come out with a good record since the black album, but whatever. a friend let me borrow death magnetic and the only song on it i liked was the day that never comes. tha album must feel really embarassed next to greats like ride the lightning and master of puppets. all good things need to come to an end...

This is one of Metallica's best songs, along with One, Enter Sandman, No leaf clover, Master of Puppets and Sad but True, but I think they should have done an S&M version of it because I bet it would have been good.

Ok, this song is not about Cliff Burton's death. That's so ridiculous, because he played on Master of Puppets, which was released two years after Ride the Lightning. Fade to Black is on Ride the Lightning. And Cliff helped right it. So why would Cliff write about his own death that he didn't even know was going happen? Because it ain't about his god d*mn death.

Now the true meaning for the song is (and this is what I just think and what the majority of people think, so it doesnt mean its necessarily correct):
I think this song is about a man/woman, thinking profoundly about committing suicide, and later on in his/her session of thoughts about suicide, he/she decides that he/she is going to do it, and ends up doing so.

It's about someone who has given life their all and has never received anything to live for in return. They've only drained themselves of their own spirit any reason to live. Misery pursues until they decide to end their life. The person second guesses their self but ultimately decides they feel that death is the only way to reach peace.

i think it's funny that people think this song was written about Cliff dying considering that Cliff WAS one of the writers. \m/

a lot of people say its about suicide, and well yea I can see where people get that. It very well may be about suicide. As I just read over the lyrics I got the impression that it could also be about depression. Falling deeper and deeper into the pit of depression.

hey guys, new to the site...

recently, this song has hit home for me too...

i think yes, the amp being stolen made jaymez upset and stuff..and yes, u an probably say there's other elements that we've ALL been thru that at times we feel there's nothing left for us, and that the only way out is to end it all...

but for some reason (and mabye im looking into it too much), i feel that there's MORE to this...to me, it's about a guy who is depressed, wants to end it all, but suicide isnt just the answer. This guy is drifting into a madness that few people have, and he's about to do something INCREDIBLY vicious and grim and drastic, and whether or not he gets killed afterwards, or kills himself afterwards, that "old" him, that person he was..that person is GONE
"growning darkness taking dawn, i was me but now he's gone"
---i think, CLEARLY, this guy has lost his mind, split into another person (speaking about himself in the 3rd person) and this new, evil version of himself has risen out of his old self fading away.
Its easy to look at this song and say "someone is so sad and depressed, he thinks about suicide." But i think the harder, faster parts of this song insinuate this is more than just some guy wanting to off himself. Those riffs indicate a tremendous darnkess growing inside this guy that has finally erupted and changed who he was into this human demon, and he does not know his next STEP, much less his next choice in life.
To put it in physical terms, maybe its the guy who goes on the killing rampage in hopes that the cops will kill him, police suicide or whatever they call it.
TO me, Metallica's lyrics are MORE than just what they seem---they're too deep and too good of a band to simply just be what is written. The old Metallica anyway (i for one do NOT kill the band for their newer stuff..the older stuff is way better yes, but i still get fired up for virtually any metallica song).

Agree, disagree, i dont care..this is what I THINK, and when i hear the song, that is IMMEDIATELY what i thought. This guy has reached the boiling point and there's no turning back...a horrific change is coming...

Like all tracks on Ride the Lightning, it's about events where you can stop it from happening but when you do it it's impossible to escape. You can stop from committing suicide, but when you start, it is impossible to stop.

^ For Christ's sake, when will people stop saying this? Burton died after Master of Puppets was recorded (ie. their THIRD album, whereas Fade To Black was on their SECOND album). He even has writing credits on this song, for the love of God. Are you implying that he helped write a song about HIS death, two years before it even happened?

By the way, anyone who thinks this song is written about the stolen amp needs to get their head checked. The song was most likely inspired by the stolen amp, but it's obviously not written about it. It's as clear as day that the theme of the song is suicide.

I know I've commented on this song before, but god damn it is just the greatest song ever written. Period. It's been my favorite since the day I heard it, and for good reason. It's impossible to find a better song than this and I dare anyone to try. It has great lyrics, a great riff, a great solo, great vocals, great drumming (what's there, at least), great bass, a great chorus (the heavy guitar riff), the best acoustic part to any song ever (the first half), and to top it all off it's THE most emotional song I have ever heard. No other song has made me feel the way I do when the acoustic guitars break in at somewhere around the 1:00 mark (give or take 20 seconds, i don't remember) and no other song has a solo as meaningful and telling as the one in Fade To Black. Even if there were no words at all in this song, the music itself tells a story and when the solo hits its peak and the narrator presumably ends their life, it will bring tears to your eyes. And then, so as never to have a dull moment, the song fades out almost immediately after the solo.

I dare anyone to find me a better song than this. I've been searching every day since mid-July 2005 and haven't found one even close.

Me too.

Pretty much every song on Ride the Lightning is about death in a different way. FFwF is dying in a fire, Ride the Lightning is Electrocution/execution, Trapped under Ice is drowning, For whom the bell tolls is war... And fade to black is suicide.

AND I LOVE IT
