When I step into the light
My arms open widely
When I step into the light
My eyes searching wildly
Would you not like to be
Sitting on top of the world with your legs hanging free
Would you not like to be OK, OK, OK

When I'm walking by the water
Wplish splash me and you taking a bath
When I'm walking by the water
Come to my toes to my ankles to my head to my soul
Then I'm blown away

When I'm walking by the water
Splish splash me and you taking a bath
When I'm walking by the water
Come to my toes to my ankles to my head to my soul
Then I'm blown away

I can't believe that we would lie in our graves
Wondering if we had spent our living days well
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves
Wondering what we might have been
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves
Wondering if we had spent our living days well
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves
Wondering what we might have been

Would you not like to be
Would you not like to be
I can't believe that you would not like to be
Would you not like to be

ok, ok, ok,
ok, ok, ok,
ok, ok, ok,
ok, ok, ok,

and we dance away

General Comment:This song is great, a big energy kick especially when Reynolds goes insane on the guitar fills.

-The meaning is one of many. Essentially, it's a build up to a climatic question. Take the risk playing with fire or play safe and possibly fall into regret. All leading up to the point of the aforementioned question it was a happy-go-lucky situation with no worries, and all fun. It was until a point of time occurred that provoked a thought of whether to or not to risk it all to either attain more happiness, or fall completely on your face. Or, on the contrary, play safe and remain silent. This, taking no risk, almost ensures that you'll never be hurt theoretically. However you will never know what could have been, "what might have been", and in the end, you might ask yourself and say, "i can't believe that we would lie in our graves, thinking of things, and what they might have been."

My Interpretation:This song is about embracing truth, love, and all the realities of our life as they are, not as we wish them to be.

By “stepping into the light”, he is seeing things as the truly are.
Things are clear when he “steps into the light”.

With his “arms open wide”, he embraces all the he sees.

His eyes are “searching wildly” because he is amazed with all the beauty of truth and love that he sees.

General Comment:The meaning of this song is quite easy to solve. I think its about "seizing the day" and live as if its your last day here on earth.

The song is beautiful and so uplifting. It's impossible to sit/stand still when listening to it, hehe. I simply love it!

General Comment:I think the best part of the song is the title...there is so much irony in a song called "lie in our graves" being about living life to the fullest.I agree with what most people said, dave is talking about enjoying love laughter and life in general, dying with no regrets. Because tomorrow isn't promised to us as someone wisely said, we have to live every day to our fullest. Would you not like to be sitting on top of the world with your legs hanging free?

General Comment:This is my new favorite song after hearing it at the Gorge the other day. I never really thought about this song but now that I have I think it's about just letting go, doing whatever, and living with no regrets. Having the time of your life because someday you WILL be stuck in your grave and do you really want to be thinking about what you could have done? No, live life in the moment and have fun because someday you won't be able too. This song makes me happy too.

General Comment:I heard from a friend that the voices in the back were taken from a birthday of his sister Anne. Even if that´s not true I´d like to belive so, since I always imagined this song to be written for her.

And the middle guitar riff part just blew me away the first time I heard this song. Probably the first song I heard with the band and I totally fell in love....I haven´t found musicians that´s done for me what this band has, and I doubt that I ever will....

General Comment:This song has gotten me through some tough times...Listening to it live with Tim Reynolds takes it to a whole new level. This song may have changed my life...I'm done dreaming of things that might have been could have been. Thanks Dave.

General Comment:the first thing that pops out at me is daves usage of light and water as if they represent the same thing..well they do. its Gods Wisdom. Dave preys and God responds in answer to daves questions. grave and water remind me of the apostles in the boat in a stormy sea. thats their "grave" or ark as they await the call to step outside and "walk" on the water.

water here (in my little story) representing mans wisdom as Gods wisdom allows man to walk on their enemies heads. or Gods wisdom becoming higher than mans wisdom. allowing some men to walk above the wisdom of their enemies heads. (making your enemy your footstool) thats the joke hear. Dave is stating how could anyone NOT ASK to be atop the world in understanding of God.

get out of your grave and walk on the water.
