I've paid my dues
Time after time
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand
Kicked in my face
But I've come through

And we mean to go on and on and on and on

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting
Till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the World

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls
You brought me fame and fortune
And everything that goes with it
I thank you all
But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise
I consider it a challenge before
The whole human race
And I ain't gonna lose

And we mean to go on and on and on and on

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting
Till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the World

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting
Till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions

General Comment:This is a great song. It may have been made at the same time as We Will Rock You with a popularity to match, but its more like early progressive rock songs they did like Bohemian Rhapsody. The backup singing reminds me of Lion King.

My Interpretation:Anyone here who claims this song is about homosexuality makes themselves look ignorant and small minded, not to mention probably prejudiced in some cases. I think it's obvious what this song is about; it's that fighting spirit, rising to the challenge when the going gets tough and giving the finger to difficult people who judge us for what we are but not who we are. In other words refusing to quit, lie down

Song Meaning:This song is about freddie Mercury and his path to glory. "I've done my sentence, but committed no crime" Therefore, people judged him for his homosexuality, but he committed no crime. also, "You've brought me fame and fortune And everything that goes with it I thank you all But it's been no bed of roses no pleasure cruise and I consider it a challenge before the whole human race And I'd never lose" In other words, he thanks everybody for his fame and fortune. but it was not easy to get that far. And, he considers it a challenge to get all of humanity to accept people with homosexuality, and he will never lose the fight. Another thing, " we'll keep on fighting till the end" he will keep on fighting for his rights till he dies.

General Comment:Out of respect for the late great Freddie Mercury, I won't post the lyrics. This was my high school's unofficial song at all sporting events except football (and we were a powerhouse in basketball, ice-hockey, baseball, and wresting). I love how it's so upbeat....gives the listener the feeling of being unstoppable. And considering Mercury was battling Aids (in private...for the most part) this song has more meaning...although the timing of its release was probably before his diagnosis).

Song Meaning:To me, this song is really about overcoming. This became especially apparent while working through a somewhat deep depression a while back. Before, especially as a kid, all I ever saw it as was a victory song to be played after a sporting event or something of that sort. It had no meaning to me beyond that. Because of that, I always kind of overlooked it because of how overplayed it seemed to be. In the thick of it, while I was on the verge of tears, it came on the radio and I actually started really LISTENING to the lyrics.

That's when the overcoming theme hit me. Maybe it's kind of obvious to a lot of you, but for me it took a while. Now, when I hear him say "We are the champions," I'm not envisioning a guy scoring a last minute goal. The "we" Freddy Mercury is singing about is actually you and me. If you've ever had a time where you felt like laying down, giving up, dying, but you're still here. You're not giving up. You're going to stick through to the end. You're going to get right back up every time life throws you to the ground and keep fighting, no matter how big a challenge is standing before you. No matter how hopeless your goal may seem. That's how you're a true champion.

Thank you Freddy, for your encouraging words. They've helped me through tough times more than you could know. May you rest in peace.

General Comment:Here's my take on the song:

It's not simply about winning a sports championship, and it's not simply about rising to fame despite those who put you down. It's about rising up and overcoming ANY obstacle. Every one of us will go through hard times, and those of us who continue on as life throws one hardship after another at us are champions simply because we don't give up on life, our goals, or the things we love. We're still here, fighting till the end.

See, it doesn't matter if you're not an athlete winning a big game. Everyone has challenges, and those challenges in your day to day life can be so much more difficult than any game. We've all had to pull through, so let's bask in our victory, because WE are the champions, my friends. Every one of us, in our own way.
