Lyrics for The Stone as interpreted by Demau Senae

The Stone Lyrics
I've this creeping
Suspicion that things are not as they seem
Reassure me
Why do I feel as if I'm in too deep

Oh, I've been praying
For some way to show them I'm not what they see
Yes I have done wrong
But what I did I thought needed be done
I swear

Unholy day
If I leave now I might get away
This weighs on me
As heavy as stone and as blue as I go

I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
If not I'll go
I will go alone

I'm a long way
From that fool's mistake and now forever pay
No, run, I will run and I'll be okay

I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone

I need so
To stay in your arms see you smile hold you close
And it weighs on me
As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold

I was just wondering if you'd come along
Tell me you will

personally i intepret this song to go along with the play of macbeth.
"I've this creeping Suspicion that things are not as they seem " : equivocation of the witches.
"the stone": theme of guilt shared by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
"But what I did I thought needed be done": sounds like the dilema that Macbeth faces after murdering Duncan and attempting to make sense of it.
"To hold up my head when my head won't hold on": haha, yes he ends up losing his head at the end of the play. anyway im jsut commenting on this cause someone showed me how this song mirrors Macbeth + im making my own song that incorporates macbeth into the lyrics.

i like the idea, writting from the sisters husbands POV but makes me sad to put such a dark not on such and amazing and beautiful song.

i love the version on the complete weekend on the rocks. the aud adds a little background vocals to that one too . . chilling.

This Stone is about death... The "stone" being a grave stone. The song has nothing to do with a heroin trip nor anything to do with is wife. The song is most likey about Ann, being that the album that it is on(before these crowded streets) is dedicated to Ann.

OK I signed up just because I FIGURED OUT THE MEANING! listen to this theory... in one interview he said this was about his sister and in one interview he said it was a song written from someone elses perspective... so i was listening to the song trying to figure out if it was his sister's perspective or her murdering husbands perspective and i think its both.. when the scarier music plays its her husbands perpective but when it lightens up its his sister talking.. what does everyone think about that? honestly dave knows the secrets to life and im not joking. i love you dave.

the stone is a revelation that dave has received from God and that no one will accept it. dave carry's it alone.

this can be related with "what you are".

the biggest revelation that seperates people from one another is the misbelief that God sends his enemies to "hell". when you tell them "God loves everyone and he gives salvation to all mankind unconditionally"..they run away and you walk alone with your burden of truth.

"what you are" is about people who believe "God hates his enemies and will torment them in hell". thay are paralleled with judas and his sweet deceiving "kiss"

the stone is about the isolation that comes with carrying the truth alone..

the added line about only fools rush in...

the fool is the person with "the truth".

loving each other in Gods definition (agape love) is giving away the truth, and not telling a lie.

dave cant help falling in love..but nobody wants his love (truth). they want to receive someone else who will tell them what they want to hear..

this is the stone. the weight of resistance.

the stone could symbolize the curse of God. such a weight crushing the one carrying it much like sisyphus.
the same stone could be the symbolize as the lid of mans spiritual grave that he cannot push open with his own spiritual strength. so he goes through life by happlessly carrying, moving and removing it out of his way.
it still is the truth though in mans newly recognised miserable life. a truth that forces man to cry out to God for its removal.
this is Gods method of quickening his creation. it is by the use of resistance and pressure and use of extremes.
Dave speaks of throwing "the pig" into the fire and the water. these are opposite extremes. it teaches man the difference between the knowledge of Good and the knowledge of evil

A while ago jalapenachris posted something saying that dave, when asked what horrible thing in the past caused him to write ‘the stone’, said he wrote ‘the stone’ from another person’s point of view. Personally I do not know what the song is about but I know its not about regretting something in the past and Dave’s response to this question backs me up. Also look at Pig on the same album which is obviously about not regretting the past and living in the present, I don’t think Dave would put two songs with conflicting meanings on the same album. 4 posts ago raherlihy I believe answered my question about this song saying that it was written from both points of view (sister and husband) using the light and dark music to contrast the two...... raherlihy is definately the closest to the real meaning in my opinion....great music on this song...Carter is a god

AMAZING song. i like to look at in the way that he loves someone and things are changing, or he did something wrong(what he thought needed be done)..or not the same way they once were. and now he is "wondering if you come along, hold up my head when my head wont hold on" he is wondering if she is still there for him, if not then he will go.

okay, I know quite a few people here are mentioning this song having religious meaning. Dave (although has done songs like The Christmas Song, Bartender, etc.) has mentioned before being agnostic. He has also talked about it in concert before singing Proudest Monkey (about evolution vs. creation--he believes in evolution). I know the song has the lyric "Unholy day", but I really don't think that neccessarily means this has anything to do with Jesus or Judas or Moses, for that matter. This song is amazing, and one of my absolute favorites to hear in concert. The only one who knows the true meaning of this song is Dave himself...but I know when I listen to it, I relate to this song...a lot. And I'm not a murderer or a victim of a violent crime, and I'm not religious. A lot of people have mentioned getting drawn into this song, and I think that if we all relate to this song so well, it's because we have something in common with it. I think it just speaks about the truths of life...not neccessarily regret, but moving on from your mistakes and hoping those you've burned along the way can forgive you and move on with you.

Ok, I read from a few sources the meaning of this song. This song is about being mostly responseble for someones death. It was an accident, but thats not how other people see things, and its causing great guilt. 'the stone' is representing a grave stone, and also the guilt that he has on his shoulders. He wants to bury leave things behind, and forget about it, but he knows he will also be affected by his stupid decision. I think the song is wrote from the perspective of his sisters husband, who killed her. Dave has said that this song was also partially based on judis being responsible for the death of jesus, and feeling the same guilt as the singer. There is a article on wikipedia.com which explains most the details.

This song has one specific meaning for Dave, but he wrote it and plays it in such a way that it has a personal meaning for every Dave fan who hears it. That is the brilliance of Dave.

I know I get goosebumps every time I listen to it. "Why do I feel as if I'm in too deep?" It makes my own personal demons rise up and confront me. Just like Dave meant it to. The man is a genius.

so ive been thinkn... i agree with the two ppl thing but i dont agree with how they were seperated, the first verse is the husband

i picture him thinking this while he is seeing everyone staring at him or somthing

-ive this creeping suspicions that things here are not as they seem reassure me
-he knows somthing is wrong and he knows that everyone knows what he did

-why do i feel as if im in too deep
-this is when he murdered her and realized that it was wrong

-ive been praying for some way to show them i am not what they see...i have done wrong, but what i did i thought needed to be done
-though he knows it was wrong he stands by his decision

-unholy day..if i leave now i may get away, God knows it weighs on me
-he is thinkging about trying to get away from this great guilt/burden

Now he is going to start from his sisters perspective
-i will go a long way..from that fools mistake and now forever pay
-she is gone now and in a different"world" so she is no longer near that fool(the husband) and she will forever pay because she can never get that life back

-i will run and ill be ok
-she is in Heaven free from that mess

this verse is written in a way that im not sure if it is meant for the husband or sister or both at once, but this is how it works for either one
-bury the past for i dont want to pay oh i wish this to turn back the clock and do over again
-the husband wishes he could go back and change the way he went about it
OR
-the sister wishes she could go back and relive her life that im guessing she loved...but that line is very broad and written in a way that everyone can relate, who doesnt want a 2nd chance

i have to disagree with all of you.

this song is about him hoping that his girlfriend would accept his marriage proposal (engagement ring = the stone)

its about how he hopes she will "come along" and marry him, and if not he'll "go alone"

of course, we all know that he was eventually rejected by his girlfriend and out came songs like halloween and grey street all about the girl who turned him down.

this song is NOT about death

In the Charlie Rose interview, Dave talks about how he writes songs with ambiguous lyrics and enjoys hearing how people interpret them. That comes right after he is asked about tragedy in his life and the death of his sister, who was killed in a murder-suicide by her husband in 1994. Charlie asks Dave if he has ever written about tragedies in his life, which prompts the disccusion about ambiguity in his lyrics. I wonder if Charlie was trying to connect his sister's death with The Stone, which Dave played for the program right before they taped the interview.

That said, it seems like The Stone is inspired by his sister's death, possibly written from the perspective of her husband. It sounds like his contemplation before committing the act, though I don't know much about the details of the incident. It's possible that what he has done wrong is not the murder, but rather some other act, maybe related to work, that has led him to this moment. He wants his wife to come with him, maybe to run away to some other place or to join him in the afterlife.

So my take: It's a confession to his wife. Her answer is no. The rest is tragedy. The stone is a metaphor for unbearable guilt.

the "stone" is a comparison of the attitude of two hearts. judas and jesus. judas betrays jesus and is heavy hearted (symbolised by a heart of stone). jesus heart is living as symolised by being light and humble.
the law given to man was later written on a tablet of flesh from earlier being written on stone tablets.
the attitudes of the law written on stone and on flesh
a comparison of a heart of flesh compared to a heart of stone.

You guys are all wrong!!!!!!! This song is in two peoples views and perspectives. The first person ( the portion of the song until hits the chorus) is in Dave's sisters husband that murdered her. Dave is sharing how that bastard was feeling/thinking. "Yes I have done wrong-But what I did I thought needed be done". Once the chorus hits, its in Dave's perspective and view now. He is establishing how he feels about his sister. He wants her back, but knows he cannot. "I was just wondering if you'd come along-Tell me you will" Hes in denial of his sisters death.
IN this line Dave is talking about his ex-brother in law/murderer "From that fool's mistake and now forever pay"
IN this line Dave talks about how he wants his sister back, but cant. He reflects it as a bone chilling cold that he feels. "To stay in your arms see you smile hold you close-And it weighs on me-As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold"

Live at radio city music hall -- Dave is kind of mumbling words in the beginning of the song...
"So I'm lookin' through this old book of mine, all the drawings of headless people and sad bastards I dunno I was 15 or so I said what the hell was this guys problem. Some of the drawings were pretty cool though, all simple, some were black and white."

I think its about a mistake thats been made, that he thought had to be done obviously. The rest is about getting past that and having the person that was hurt, "come along" because they are need. That person is someone that means so much, but Dave understands that it may not work out the way he wants.
