Lyrics for The Stone as interpreted by Demau Senae

The Stone Lyrics
I've this creeping
Suspicion that things are not as they seem
Reassure me
Why do I feel as if I'm in too deep

Oh, I've been praying
For some way to show them I'm not what they see
Yes I have done wrong
But what I did I thought needed be done
I swear

Unholy day
If I leave now I might get away
This weighs on me
As heavy as stone and as blue as I go

I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
If not I'll go
I will go alone

I'm a long way
From that fool's mistake and now forever pay
No, run, I will run and I'll be okay

I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone

I need so
To stay in your arms see you smile hold you close
And it weighs on me
As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold

I was just wondering if you'd come along
Tell me you will

I think this song is about something(s) he has done in the past, in one way I think he wants to do over, but in another sense he's not sorry for it
"But what I did I thought needed be done"
he may regret it, but wants to explain that he knows it was wrong and now he doesn't want people to view him like that again.

It's a great song, and one that Dave probably feels really close to, because I have seen him get kind of emotional when he played it at a concert I went to

This is my favorite DMB song.. he knows that everything isn't how it seems to be.. he knows something is up.. ppl's views of him and his motives aren't right, and he wants to prove them wrong.. the feeling of doing something that other ppl don't understand is as heavy on his shoulders as stone.. He needs someone to relate to, and to "hold up my head when my head wont hold on.."

Just recognizing the negative in your life and correcting them with positive. "I will run and I'll be okay" You can't run from your problems. Dont' run from people you love or try to go through life by yourself. Try to bring someone you care about along for the ride.

The opening lines, "I've this creeping suspicion that things are not as they seem." .. ummm wow what a perfect opening line to this song, it very well sets the kinda eerie mood that the whole song supports. I'd rather not break down the song line by line, but rather, I believe he is questioning the faith of a loved one. He is paranoid and suspicious, hence the first line. It's also quite a love song as well. :) rock on dave.

This song really gets me, and I'm not entirely sure why. But, one of my favorite songs on Before These Crowded Streets. That entire album is awesome, and definitely my favorite.

Okay, first of all this song was not written 17 days after he married his wife. This song is on before these crowded streets which came out in 1998. dave got married in 2000. I dont see how that works. Anyway the song is about death. The stone means the tombstone. i also love this song live. Good stuff dave. cheers!

I remember watching some television show where an audience member asked Dave what he did that was so bad that he would write 'The Stone' and Dave replied that it was written from someone elses point of view, which opens up a lot of possibility.

It is crazy to think that Dave may have written from his sister Anne's husband's point of view, who murdered Anne then killed himself before 'Under The Table' came out

The dark and regretful part of the song could be where the someone is feeling paranoid and mournful of something he's done.

The lighter part could be where the paranoia lifts and he realizes the situation he's in

Actually, I don't really know what this tune is about. all i know is that it gives me goosebumps when i hear it. When i had the 'creeping suspicion' that an X of mine was cheating on me (which she was) this song almost brought tears to my eyes whether it be about a drifting lover or not. My older brother actually told me he thought this song was about Moses (Parting the red sea moses) after he had killed that slave worker. this was his own thoughts on the song, not something he read.

All i got to say is that this track combined with the entire album flows amazingly, it think that this is one of the best albums of my era, with all the interludes and lead ins.
Also the performance on Charlie Rose kicked ass, love that version

this song seems to be about when u cheat on someone and then u lie about it. then they find out... with lyrics like " things are not what they seem" and "from that fools mistake and now forever pay"...makes sense to me

I know this song probably wasn't written with this in mind, but it could be interpreted as Judas thinking of his betryal of Christ.
"things are not as they seem" - Judas realises that he may have set in motion something bigger than he thought (ie the crucifixion)

"I've been praying...what i thought needed be done"
He is trying to defend his actions. It might have gone wrong, but he had good intentions.

"Unholy Day" - enough said

The first chorus he is seeking forgiveness from Jesus but then as the music darkens he turns and begins to blame jesus for what happened. "that fool's mistake" and decides that he won't try to rectify it, but he will run and be okay.

The other interpretation of that bit could be that the 'fool' is himself and he is running from his own mistakes.

In the end he realises that he did wrong and needs redemption but doesn't know how to get it.

Anyway, as many have said, the beauty of DMB's songs is that there are many interpretations, so you don't have to agree with me.

too often we restrict a song to only have the possibility of written from the songwriter's actual feelings and ideas. we forget that a songwriter has the freedom to take on another persona, i.e. a drug addict, a murderer, a pregnant teen, whatever. i'm not saying dave wasn't a drug addict or a murderer, but he has the right to pen a song as if he were.

Well, the beauty to a DMB song is that it can mean so many different things to so many different people. Take me for example on this one:

For me, in the first few lines, we see someone who is either affraid of himself or affraid of others for something he has done. His own pain and suffering has got to a point that he can not deal with his current place in life that the only option left to him, as far as he sees it, is to run from it all. Although, inspite of current dilema's, he begs the one person left that might love him to come along, but if they won't, then he'll run away alone. The sadest part is the simple truth; no matter what, he still runs away in the end.

I really don't know what Dave had in mind with this lyric, but for me it's almost scarry and almost beautiful that someone came with the song that interpretes my life so precisely in very few words... This song is connected to a big bunch of synchronicity cases that happened to me, especially considering this girl I loved the most... aughhh, explaining "What does this song mean to you?" for me would take me 3 pages on this site to write, and your lifetime to digest it properly... and explaining what synchronicity means would take few more pages, too... ok, I am the stone forever cruising Bahamas, hope YOU :p read this... Anyway, to other readers of this comment, it wasn't even surprised to find out that Dave is Capricornus in zodiac, just as I am... It's really strange how artists write songs as their own, but as soon as they publish songs, songs don't belong to them anymore, they belong to their audience.

Definitely the best and the strongest song I ever heard from Dave, and definitly the one I felt the most... Nothing touches me more than this one, sometimes I have to skip this song as the presence of certain memories overwhelms me...BEAUTIFUL

It's not on any CD that I know of just will do it every now & then live. He played in on Charlie Rose solo, if you use Limewire search "Dave Matthews, Can't Help Falling In Love."
