Lyrics for The Stone as interpreted by Demau Senae

The Stone Lyrics
I've this creeping
Suspicion that things are not as they seem
Reassure me
Why do I feel as if I'm in too deep

Oh, I've been praying
For some way to show them I'm not what they see
Yes I have done wrong
But what I did I thought needed be done
I swear

Unholy day
If I leave now I might get away
This weighs on me
As heavy as stone and as blue as I go

I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
If not I'll go
I will go alone

I'm a long way
From that fool's mistake and now forever pay
No, run, I will run and I'll be okay

I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone

I need so
To stay in your arms see you smile hold you close
And it weighs on me
As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold

I was just wondering if you'd come along
Tell me you will

Ok at the very begining of this song you can hear the base of someones voice. DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE SAYING? Iv listened to it a hundred times but I cant make out one word of it.

This song, it's absolutly amazing. The instrumentals enhance the lyrics, and makes what he is trying to say stand out more then he intended. He did something that he felt the need to do. Wether or not it had benifits for everyone else. He needed it to be done for himself. Now, people are like "dude, what did you do! you're nuts!" He can only turn to one person, wether it be a g/f, friend or God.
"I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want"

Here, he is saying please, I do need someone for me - come with me, if you did this - I'd do the same for you.

"If not I'll go
I will go alone"

He needs to get out of here, wether it be alone or with someone else. He needs comfort.

"I need so
To stay in your arms see you smile hold you close"

Ok, he needs someone... I believe the "if not i'll go alone" is a bit of DMB sarcasm. Why would someone go alone anyways!?

He did something wrong, and wants someone there to run away with. Needs someone to love and hold. Do the same thing for him too.

dmb is a band that can survive through this gay pop world and nu-metal barrage we have today with a sax and a violin...that is just talent right there in and of its self

The Stone is about a heroin trip.

I agree with Emo. Dave Matthews made a decision to watch out for himself and it effected other people in his life. He is sorry and there is a particular person that he wants to forgive him (Probably Helena or Ashley). He also refers to a "fool" who somehow ruined something for him... whether this "fool" changed his mind about something or someone he cares about's mind for a crucial decision. He can run from his problem and he'll get through the hard times but it would be so much better if she would come too so he can lean a bit more.

This song was written 17 days after he married his wife, Ashley, Dont know if that helps or not, but just thought i'd throw that in there.

ok this song is FAR from a heroin trip, that is so far fetched! and this song has nothing to do with his wife. After watching "The Charlie Rose" show on 60 minutes 2, which was an hour devoted to Dave, I learned that this song is about his sister who was murdered by her husband in Africa. The CD "Under the table and dreaming" is dedicated to her (Anne i believe was her name) So that explains the "serious song" that dispatchoar talked about.
This song was written long before he even met his wife i believe because on the Charlie Rose show they had tape of dave from his demo tape (from 1991 i think) entitled "Rutabega Studio" which dave played all the older versions of his songs like "monkey man" "after her" the old version of "say goodbye" and "the stone" (along with others...i think it had like 6 or more songs on it). so that kind of dates the song. You can download the "Rutabega Studio" from Kazaa or Napster but check the spelling of Rutabega, its sometimes spelled Rutebega and others Rutabega....its not all that great of quality but cool none the less to hear dave sing the songs like that.

This is my favorite dmb song. Beautiful song about regretting what you've done in the past and wanting to take it back/do it over again. I can't tell you how much I can relate to this song.

This song wasn't written after he married Ashley. He didn't marry Ashley until 2000, this song came out on Before These Crowded Streets in April of 1998. So use that. A lot of people think it could be written about Julia, maybe it could be about Ashley, no one knows. Either way, it's an awesome song.

This song and this album - Before These Crowded Streets- got me through a rough time in my life. I agree with euphoria that this song is a bout regretting something that you have done in the past. "I've been praying
For some way to show them
I'm not what they see
Yes I have done wrong
But what I did I thought needed be done"

I can definately relate to that!

Musicly, I love the flow and the mood of this song. I think dmb is one of the most talented group of musicians out there.

I think this song is about something(s) he has done in the past, in one way I think he wants to do over, but in another sense he's not sorry for it
"But what I did I thought needed be done"
he may regret it, but wants to explain that he knows it was wrong and now he doesn't want people to view him like that again.

It's a great song, and one that Dave probably feels really close to, because I have seen him get kind of emotional when he played it at a concert I went to
