Well, you say that I treat you
Like a book on a shelf
I don't take you out that often
Because I know that I completed you
And that's why you are here
That's the reason you stay here
How awful that must feel
You said you'd be my dream
I could have you every night
And if by morning I'd forgotten you
Well, no big deal, that'd be all right
Because you're the reoccuring kind
You are the reoccuring kind
You never really leave my mind
Are you the love of my lifetime
Because there's been times I've had my doubts
We were just kids when I first kissed you
In the attic of my parents' house
And I wish we were there now
I took so long to figure out
What this book has been about
Now I write when I'm away
Letters that you'll never read
You said, "Go explore those other women
The geography of their bodies
But there's just one map you'll need
You're a boomerang you'll see
You will return to me
Well, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will, you will
Because if you don't, then this book's all lies
If you don't, then my plans would all be ruined
If you don't, I'll start drinking like the way I drank before
And I just won't have a future anymore"
Like a book on a shelf
I don't take you out that often
Because I know that I completed you
And that's why you are here
That's the reason you stay here
How awful that must feel
You said you'd be my dream
I could have you every night
And if by morning I'd forgotten you
Well, no big deal, that'd be all right
Because you're the reoccuring kind
You are the reoccuring kind
You never really leave my mind
Are you the love of my lifetime
Because there's been times I've had my doubts
We were just kids when I first kissed you
In the attic of my parents' house
And I wish we were there now
I took so long to figure out
What this book has been about
Now I write when I'm away

Conor can never truly love Neely because he will always feel as if there is something, or someone, better out there. He feels a sense of comfort with her like he knows she will always be there. She is a piece of him and reminds him of his past, almost like being with her is nostalgic. Neely is sure of her love for Conor and feels a false sense of confidence in his love for her. Neely will always be a part of Conor, like a book on his shelf of life, tucked away and revisited from time to time.
This is what can be extracted out of the lyrics;
A guy is an asshole to his girlfriend.
She sort of leaves him.
He sort of blames her and keeps being an asshole to her (second, third and half of the fourth verse).
Then, in the last section of the fourth verse, he's sort of denying or repressing the fact that she left him; pointing out that she will come back to him.
And the last part's are the doubt's and anxiety that she'll perhaps not come back.
There's no reason to make it more complex than this. It's very straightforward and do not display any impressing mastery of words or any of that sort. It's actually surprisingly prosaic.
However, what makes this song good is that it taps into the nature of relationship between couples, when couples are just at the verge of disassociation, having broke up several times and gotten back together. But there's always that one break up that feels too real, like it's really over. And sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't and this is what this song expresses; the uncertainty of the future between people even though one might think that it'll be all right, there something intuitivly saying that it wont.
Because you're the reoccuring kind
You are the reoccuring kind
When couples pair in youth, room must be made for the growing up processes that many people go through as single(s).
I'm not sure. The way he sings is kind of contradictory to it. He sings it like he's 100% sure.
I don't know. just a thought.
I could have you every night
And if by morning I'd forgotten you
Well, no big deal, that'd be all right
Because you're the reoccurring kind
You are the reoccurring kind
You never really leave my mind"
story of my life(:

Double-meaning.
1) The guy is done with her. He finished the book (aka their romance). He only bothers to relive it when convenient for him, most likely in a booty-call kind of way.
2) He completes her, and that's why she stays. He knows he fulfills her, so he doesn't have to bother with giving her the attention she deserves. He can take her for granted.
She's aware of both things, but believes one day he'll love her the way she loves him. One day, when he's done with his other women, she believes/deludes herself into believing that he will return to her.
