Come and see,
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
Oh, but the difficulty's coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you what to be
But I'm coming to much more
Of Me

All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
In the way I used to play for
All the love and loneliness
That nobody notices now
Oh, begging slow I'm coming here

I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please

I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run into the rain and play
Let it just splash all over you

My Interpretation:To me this about a man who is trying to overcome his own demons while living with regret of what happened to a relationship in the past. He's come to the realization of what he did and is running towards her wanting to take some her pain away now. He's hoping she'll take that chance with him even though the odds are stacked against them. He's telling her not to worry about him - his feelings, he's strong enough now that if things don't work out he'll be okay. He can't tell her to do the same and take that chance, but no matter what he knows he'll be okay because he has grown as a person. All the memories, good and bad come back and he reaches out to her and tries to help, but also knowing he's in part a source of the pain she has. He's telling her that he meant well in their previous relationship and only wanted to make her happy but he knows that's not what happened. He can't pass by this possible second chance they have and wants her to live in the moment, but she can't.

General Comment:one of the best live versions in my opinion is at radio city with Tim Reynolds, The emotion of the song is multiplied at this performance in my opinion.
I agree with most of the comments, it reflects the emotion and want of a long lost love.

General Comment:i read an interview with dave probably 8 or so years ago and the song is about break up with management ,he was actually sitting in a probate type room waiting for agreement with manager ( or someone like that) when he wrote the song , dave said the manager at the time was trying to have them take their music in direction they didnt wont to go ,the manager made it very differcult for them to leave but they did! i was a little disapointed when i read the article cuz i always thought it was a love/break up song too and in away it is a break up song just with managment! i also think one of his many documentaries he talks of it too.but what is so great about dmb ..they write thier songs so they can be taken many different ways!

My Interpretation:Real meanings aside, to me this about a crush between two people who then don't see each other for a while. Then they are put in a situation where they see each other at a social occasion and a lot of old feelings come up, and the singer decides to try to get the nerve up to ask her to dance.....

General Comment:This was one of my favorite songs in 1997. I was 17 and I was a senior in high school. I had my dream girl with my in my truck and we were driving around after a date. This song came on and we both started singing it together. She especially loved the verse:

    I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
    Please

I was reading this songmeaning like it was about "crash into me", i end up crying thinking about how i polluted on my life's love, and how to breath life into her. Thank you so very much, you open my mind in so many levels, now i will give a listen to this song. Cheers!

General Comment:A lot of Dave's songs have religious references in them. I wonder if this part is a reference to the Good Samaritan parable from the Bible:

    I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
    I will bring water

I'm not sure exactly how it would fit in with the rest of the song. Maybe as simple as a desire to help others?

General Comment:he left her because he'd suffered something but he wants her back(Oh, but the difficulty's coming here). he's impassioned (I'm coming slow but speeding) and trying to ignite their love. he's begging her to let go of their negative history (All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now). he's matured and knows he has to put up with crap if he really loves her ( I wont tell you what to be, But I'm coming to much more of me). he wants her to reconsider him (I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please)..i like the Please emphasized. he screwed up and is accepting responsibility (I wouldn't pass this by Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than). he wants her happy...both of them happy together..(Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder, I came in praying for you, Why wont you run into the rain and play, Let it just splash all over you). He's seen her joyous..innocent and perfectly in love with him. he remembers and it compelling him to bring it back. he wants to do whatever it takes to get to that state again. I am at this point in my life now. she's my world that i polluted, along with all the other critics she endured. i have to figure out how to remove the damage and breathe new life into her. i can't imagine not having her in my life...i have to make her healthy again.
