Lyrics for #41 as interpreted by Demau Senae

#41 Lyrics
Come and see,
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
Oh, but the difficulty's coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you what to be
But I'm coming to much more
Of Me

All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
In the way I used to play for
All the love and loneliness
That nobody notices now
Oh, begging slow I'm coming here

I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please

I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run into the rain and play
Let it just splash all over you

i never trully understand what the real meaning of the lyrics. i think it's somewhat about the optimistic view on life, about how you overcome all the tragedies and bitterness and "run in the rain and play" this song show us how weird and beautiful songwriter dave is.

and by the way the last for minute instrumental part is trully a masterpiece...

I have trouble seeing this as a song about business or cops...I had heard that it was titled #41 because it was their 41st song and they had no title...same with #36 and #40. Anyway, to me, it seems like dating someone who is depressed and realizing the problems. You two are never on the same level and the depressed person can never see the bright side of things. Maybe it is a breakup song as well. My favorite lines are:
"Why wont you ever be glad
It melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
why wont you run
In the rain and play
Let the tears splash all over you "
it seems like he's accepting that he can't do any more to help her, but is still praying that she can find a way to be happy and break away from all of the sadness. anyway, I have been in love with Dave since my brother got me listening to Crash when i was little and this has become my favorite dave song by far.

Well, yeah, I think Dave just likes messing with fans. Reading previously someone said that Dave was quoted in concert saying that it was originally titled 41 Police - hard to believe though - and then if you listen to Live at Luther College, he says "This is our newest song, it's called creatively as it's the 41st that we wrote, um, it's called #41."
I think Dave is just being all encompassing with this song. This one gets me through everything though. I love Dave Matthews passionately.
"I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles." I think that one line explains it all. Vague but true.

Glad I discovered this site.
We saw an much earlier poster (two years earlier?) point out what Dave had said it meant in a book or an interview and I definately find it interesting as to what it actually means, but as I've gone though these posts, it's even more interesting reading what the posters/fans have said what it means to THEM, which seems to be what this site is about.

FYI - water - wet, wheels - round - sand - oh so so tiny but such a pain to get out of your carpet.

#41 is one of my favourite songs of all time, and while there isn't a version I don't like, it didn't hit me until I heard it on the Live at Luther College disc. To me, the sound of an accoustic guitar is one of the most pure sounds there is (are?), and when you're listening to a band as talented as this one with as many wonderful and wonderfully intricate things going on at once, it can take the focus away from the lyrics some times.

For me, this song is a conversation about coming to terms with second chances. There have been a few times in my life where "fate" has put me back in touch with a few situations where something positive should have happened the first time, but when the second chance was offered, one of us wasn't ready to go through the same thing again, despite the near pleaing of the other.

To me, it's also about hope, and without that, there's not much left to go on. Even though the ending doesn't paint the most optimistic picture, I still feel better every time I hear the piece. On the Live at Luthor College, with the "out-tro", I can almost see our hero leaving the unsucessful conversation, walking down the street, shaking his head, but realising he did everything he could and he's going to learn from it.

"What does this song mean to you?"

the great thing about music is making connections with the lyrics. no one is right or wrong here. songs can mean anything to anyone. dave may have written about a particular situation, but the question at the top of this little comment box is: "what does this song mean to YOU?"

to ME, the song is about situations that are tough and it's about finding peace and 'your own way out' of them. always find happiness :)

I will go in this way, and find my own way out.

that line reminds me of frank sinatra's 'my way'

dave matthews is a poet. the best thing about his lyrics is that it's up to many different interpretations. the only thing we can discuss is what HE intended it...which he rarely reveals. He does a lot of this, however, in VH1 storytellers with tim reynolds.

the most amazing thing about his music is that you can listen to the same songs during different parts of your life and it can touch you a completely different way.

Dave Matthews Band is incredible.

Me
All at once the ghosts come back

I think the song is about death... it's a dark topic and hard to accept, but dave makes the best of it and accepts the idea of it.

He is trying to bypass his troubles and not waste precious time on them while keeping a slow and steady pace, but life is moving uncontrolably fast.
Asking to dance is symbolic of taking advantage of moments that take your mind off of troubles.

He will go into his life his way, not copying anyone else's path. He won't ask people to come with him, insisting that they make up their own minds... "Coming to much more - Me" is symbolizing him finding his comfort zone and place in this world.... "ghosts reeling in" is straightforward - meaning death... Then he wonders how it would be if they came down CRASHING instead of reeling you in, so he could indeed stay, play, and love..... It is ironic that you die after you find yourself...

The last verse is Dave coming to the realization that he needs to live for the moment and live as life is fed to him (carpe diam)....
If anyone has an open-minded opinion on this, please comment... This is my favorite all-time song, even with its unprecise meaning.

In effort to keep the spirit of what this site should be about which is expressing what we feel these songs mean to us...I thought i'd offer my interpretation for what I would like to believe this song means or at least acknowledge what it means to me:

Coming to terms with wanting a second chance with someone you once were close with. Most likely, romantically. Everyone always says " Just give it time" but sometimes time can only make the inner turmoil worse and the regret grows so large it becomes overwhelming which I think Dave captures so perfectly..on one hand you want to move on but on the other all you want to do is get on your knees and beg for that person to take you back but perhaps its the person's pride that makes it hard to go back:
" Come and see
I swear by now I'm playing time
I against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance and while I'm
In the front
The play on time is won
But the difficulty is coming here "

And everyone is counseling you on how to move on and get over whatever remorse you are feeling you know what you want to do and you aren't interested in hearing others stories you are willing to make your own mistakes
"I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you to stay
But I'm coming to much more
Me"

So you do it...you go back. You walk back into their life and lay it on the line...
"All at once the ghosts come back
Reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
Remember when I used to play for
All of the loneliness that nobody
Notice now
I'm begging slow I'm coming here
Only waiting I wanted to stay
I wanted to play
I wanted to love you
I'm only this far
And only tomorrow leads my way

I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please, I wouldnt pass this by
I would take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why wont you ever be glad
It melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
why wont you run
In the rain and play
Let the tears splash all over you "

and then you wait...and you hope. I think the tears are almost like a reference to other person cleansing themselves from whatever hard feelings they are holding onto from the past so that they can move forward....hopefully together? and the music is so powerful it captures all of those feelings of tension, love, frustration, remorse, anxiety, and most of all hope. In the end I feel that is emotion that is the driving force behind this song. Hope.

Its about being true to yourself and your own wants and needs... when you know the odds are against you.. you dive in head first.."I will go in this way.. and find my own way out"... He knows he wants something that can not be forever his, but he pursues it anyway, knowing he will get hurt. Its about loving... he wanted to stay, he wanted to play..he wanted to love, but he knows he cant.. even though he knows everything is working against him... he loves anyway...

This is the kind of song that has a meaning that eludes you until you find yourself in a certain emotional place, and you listen to the song, and it's meaning becomes clear. I can't explalin the song, but I know that I listened to it once after experiencing a huge professional disappointment, and the song really made sense. I think a lot of DMB's songs are like this; they're almost more an abstract expression of emotion.

very touching...for fans this is a must learn if u play guitar...the intro is difficult but the verses and chorus are quite learnable....classic dave rythym with the baseline tap...

"used to be...that you and me...play for all the lonliness that nobody notices now"

definitely about how his life has changed since becoming famous...artist make their best music in times of strong emotional states...also it has to do with a business argument with someone he was close with

dmb and bela fleck version where they infuse the song from their album left of cool during the jam out is beyond describable

Everytime i hear this song i get completely into it, one of the reasons why i love DMB, Their music completely embraces you. While i agree that the Luther College version is good, i have to say, that Golden Gate Park, 2004,(live trax 2) is fucking AMAZING. at the end he added a small verse of Everyday in it and you can hear the audience. love it.

This song is so beautiful.

I could not tell anybody what it's about, but there is a certain feeling I get when I listen to it. I agree with mmbpaddock, completely.

The most beautiful thing about this song is that, whether it was initially written about an argument or a business colleague or the police, it can mean something completely different to hundreds of people; it's supposed to! That's what's so wonderful about music in general, and especially DMB.

I love this song.
