Lyrics for #41 as interpreted by Demau Senae

#41 Lyrics
Come and see,
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
Oh, but the difficulty's coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you what to be
But I'm coming to much more
Of Me

All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
In the way I used to play for
All the love and loneliness
That nobody notices now
Oh, begging slow I'm coming here

I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please

I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run into the rain and play
Let it just splash all over you

my favorite songs, or artists for that matter, are those that you can live in while listening to their words. this song is so great because you can apply it to your life, no matter what you're going through, and get a positive gain out of it. to me, because of what i'm going through right now, this song means that we can better ourselves. that we don't have to settle with what we currently have. he wasn't happy with his surroundings and made a conscious effort to change that, even though it was going to be a difficult time for him. he might have broken off a relationship of some kind, or made some other life-altering decision, but he did it, no matter what. he made up his mind and was going to make the best out of his decision. he didn't see anything as a regret, loved the time he spent there, would have done it again, but wouldn't have taken any more of it... because he needs to better himself. dave's awesome. live life, but make sure you're happy doing it, and never regret anything!

This song was best played at the 4-20 show in 2002. Bela Fleck and The Flecktones are on it with him. One of the most amazing peices of music i have ever heard in my life. It is 39 minutes long with a good jam in it involving "Futureman"from bela fleck.Simply amazing.

yeah, i agree with most of you on here...it is about a fight with a 'business associate' if you want to call it that...the guy was Ross Hoffman, dave's mentor, and here's a direct quote from dave about the song..."I was thinking about where I come from, and why I wrote songs and what was my inspiration," Matthews says. "And how I was in this situation where those things that I'd done, I so loved, had now suddenly become a source of incredible pain for me. Suddenly there's all this money, and people pulling, asking,"Where's mine?" The wild dogs come out. The innocence of just making music was kinda overshadowed by the dark things that come along with music & success. So it is a song of looking back, but at the same time adamantly looking forward and going, 'But I'm still going to carry on regardless.'"...just in case you all wanted to know...

I don't think it matters what the song means to the band, but what it means to you. That is why I think DMB leaves their songs open for interpretation.

I love this song dearly. Just had to get that off my chest... I attended a live proformance at my school of this song sung by a pal of mine. He did a very good job of bringing all the emotions that #41 entails to life. Another reason I love this song is because it directly relates to certain events in my life that have changed me forever. I actually believe this song is about getting BACK TOGETHER with someone you thought you had lost and loved dearly. I get this from the lyrics "I'm begging slow I'm coming here
Only waiting I wanted to stay
I wanted to play
I wanted to love you
I'm only this far
And only tomorrow leads my way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head" It just made sense that it was about a guy who mistakenly broke up with a girl and wants to get back with her. But then, it's just my interpertation, I could be wrong.

No matter what the "true meaning" of this song is, I'm sure that none of us will argue that it's beautifully written and performed. I love the lines:

"Why wont you ever be glad
It melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
why wont you run
In the rain and play
Let the tears splash all over you"

dave does something w/ this song that not many other bands can do- inspire me. How amazing is it that a song can inspire others to reach for their dreams and for big big things?

You ever have one of those things happen, where you're listening to a song and all the sudden you hear one part of it, and it's like your heart skips a beat, and kinda takes your breath away.. and you have to just step back and be like.... "damn" well this song can pretty much do that to me from time to time.. this song is responsible for me falling into the DMB 'trap'. It is truly an inspiring song and one of daves best works.. rock on dave.

This song, the version on Listener Supported, is my all time very favorite song (hence the 41 in all of my screennames for years!). Whenever I hear this I just have to dance. And if I'm drunk, I usually have to cry too.
This song means different things to everyone, and that's the beauty of it. To me, I can't put the way this song feels into words, but what I can say is that it feels like Dave crawled into my brain and took every emotion I've ever felt in my life from one extreme to the next- celebration, loneliness, longing, loving, suffering, and just living, and put them into a song with solos that echo what I'm feeling equally, if not more stronly, than the actual words. This song makes me feel so helpless and little and pointless, but at the same time, stronger than anything and in complete control. Isn't that strange? This all becomes to much for me and then I have to stop thinking about it or I freak out! hahaha I LOVE DMB!

I don't care what it's about, and honestly, I don't want to know. I just love listening to it... Over and over again. I've got a feeling that if I ever figure this one out it'll lose something. But that's why I never will.

"Crash" and "Under the Table and Dreaming" really are the best DMB albums... And I love how this song dissolves perfectly into "Say Goodbye".

Man, I swear, this is probably the best song DMB will ever make. #41 deserves to be in the ending credits of an awesome movie. As a film student I have to do something about that. (runs off to pick up digital video camera)

You are INtitled your own opinion One/Vind. Everyone of the members of the band are extremely talented. Not only can they play their instruments better than most bands but when they sing they sound phenomenal. They are always intune and have and ear for music. I Love Daves Voice. Thats the reason i started listening to him cause it was so original. then i became a huge fan of the music. His lyrics are the most original, best stuff ever.

PS. FUCK GEORGE BUSH. THANKS FOR NOTHING DUHBYA!

I am so psyched to see that there are still some hardcore dave fans in 2004, soon to be 2005. I thought that old fogies like myself (mid to late twenty-somethings) were the only ones still listening to and loving DMB. Some of you are quite young, which indicates to me that his music is truly timeless! Your fresh-eyed perspectives gives me the opportunity to fall in love with Dave all over again.
