Lyrics for #41 as interpreted by Demau Senae

#41 Lyrics
Come and see,
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
Oh, but the difficulty's coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you what to be
But I'm coming to much more
Of Me

All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
In the way I used to play for
All the love and loneliness
That nobody notices now
Oh, begging slow I'm coming here

I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please

I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run into the rain and play
Let it just splash all over you

Umm...you sure that's a violin? Luther College? I thought it was Timmy's guitar with an effect on it...It was just Dave and Tim after-all...

Sory, one more thing. About the business associate thing...I guess the song did have multiple meanings then...Because the Whole "I wanted to love you" part....I mean, business associate??? And the last verse too. Read the lst few lines...Ain't no business associate he's singing about there...

My absolute, all-time favortie song ... brings me to tears every time i hear it live. It also has the most moving lyrics ever: "Why won't you ever be glad? / It melts into wonder. / I came in praying for you. / Why won't you run into rain and play / And let tears splash all over you?" Breathtaking...

Yeah this thing can't be about a business thing or whatever. I have read that sometimes when playing it live, Dave will sing, "I miss you Anne". If he says something about his oldest sister who is now dead, I really doubt it could do with business. PLease correct me if I am wrong. I know its one of the # songs when he'll talk about his sister

dmbluvr was totally correct on his INTERPATION of the song. It's a song that has many meanings yet still is so great because of that.A song isn't about the meaning the artist had it's about the meaning his listeners hear. If we try to force our views of the song on someone and keep saying over and over how it's about a business collegue or whatever then the song just won't be as good.

star_watcher,321, I'm a girl...I know that has nothing to do with my interpretation of this song, but I thought I would clear that up.
Anyway...I agree, we should just soak up the song, who cares what the real meaning of the song is...maybe there is no TRUE meaning...but it's such a great song we can't ruin it by arguing over it. It's a beautiful song and I'm sure Dave has a beautiful meaning to go along with it.

I CAN FINALLY SETTLE THIS ARGUEMENT. I was reading one of my Dave books, "Dave Matthews Band, Step into the Light" and this is a direct quote from the book. "Matthews says that "#41," a poignant song with striking vocal octave jumps and sustained falsetto holds, was written around the time he had a parting of ways with longtime friend and business associate Ross Hoffman. "I was thinking about where I come from, and why I wrote songs and what was my inspiration. And how I was now in this situation where those things that I'd done, I so loved, had now suddenly become a source of incredible pain for me. Suddenly, there's all this money and people pulling, asking, 'Where's Mine?' The wild dogs come out. The innocense of just wanting to make music was kinda overshadowed by the dark things that come along with money and success. So it's a song about looking back, but at the same time, a song that's still adamantly looking forward and going,'But I'm still going to carry on, regardless'"

Although this song may have been written b/c of a business associates, we must remember that it may mean different things to different people. Dave himself seems to embrace the idea of everyone doing, thinking whatever they want.

i love dave. his music is so creative, i've never heard another artist like him.....and doubt i will anytime soon. his poetry is amazing enough to stand on its own, and when he adds his signature music to it......man, they are all hits!!!

This is my favorite song off of that album. It weird how this song is about police. But you can kind of feel that in the beginning of the song; how it reminds you of a high speed chase. But the lyrics are deep, and its basically sort of in comparison with love and tragedy. i love Dave!!!!

This is my favorite DMB song. I think it covers so many areas of humanity: love, loss, and hope. Besides having many different meanings, it is beautifly sung, played, and expressed. This song live is DMB at its best.

This is my favorite dmb song. i love it. To me its about over comming all obsticles. It says to me that you can overcome anything and you should always keep hope. Even if it does seem like its over, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Dont live in your sorrows and regrets.
