Lyrics for #41 as interpreted by Demau Senae

#41 Lyrics
Come and see,
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
Oh, but the difficulty's coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you what to be
But I'm coming to much more
Of Me

All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
In the way I used to play for
All the love and loneliness
That nobody notices now
Oh, begging slow I'm coming here

I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please

I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run into the rain and play
Let it just splash all over you

If you guys listen to the Radio City version with Tim, which I think was his best version of this song yet! It's defenitly about someone special in Dave's life, he puts in some add'l words in there. "it used to be that you and me played for all the loniless that nobody notices now"
It's just a beatiful song overall.

I personly think this song is about all the worries and responsiblity you have when you grow up, and i think Dave is just realizing that/putting it on paper in this song. Which can also relate to Dave's work companion as an inspiration- not the base of the song.

Come and see,
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
Oh, but the difficulty's coming here

(Dave is saying he's going to death slow but times passing by because he realizes hes not as kid so he also says speeding, Do you wanna dance(be carefree and have fun, enjoy life.) but the difficulty's coming here-(I picture Dave looking over to a desk with a stack of papers ands like- crap.)

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you what to be
But I'm coming to much more
Of Me

He's gonna find a way out of all this crap. And he's coming to much like himself, an adult.

All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
In the way I used to play for
All the love and loneliness
That nobody notices now
Oh, begging slow I'm coming here

What if he did stop all this adult stuff and at one point it all came down crushing(which i think should be crashing.) Nobody sees the cute, fun, lonely, selfish way that they all did as kids anymore cause they are all grown up.

I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please

He wanted to stay, play, and love like a kid, he knows hes still kinda young but again he can only go foward, only tommorow leads his way. He wants to waltz (again dance)back to being a carefree kid. then please is just a little beg-

I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run into the rain and play
Let it just splash all over you

he woulnt pass child hood by
what sort of man skips that
why cant he ever be glad(carefree)
why can we just run into the rain and laugh and
splash and have a sweet time, like he wouldve as a child

-Anywho, thats just how i like to think of it. Think of it anyway you want.
DMB rocks and for all you BWGK haters out there, ive been a fan for a long time since crash
and i think its an amazing album like most of the ones he's done.
Peace.

I don't think it's about a guy having trouble with his business or anything. For me,this song is kinda like broken hearted. The singer is facing a trouble and he'll choose whatever is good for everyone, no matter the consequences for him. The singer is still in love with them and wish that he can still be with her.

What's amazing about Dave's lyrics, (No disrespect to the band) is that for each one of us, they can mean something unique. I am fully willing to believe that Dave wrote it about a falling out with his manager. What is amazing is that it means infinitely more to me. A long time ago, it was a song about a man terrified of sharing his feelings of love for a woman. I could have broken down every line for you to support my case. (I did, in a paper for a college class.) My case was quite compelling, and anyone who read it had a tough time finding any flaw in my interpertation.

However, there is no right answer. Today, that song means more to me than it ever has. It reminds me of the love that I let slip away. I heard from her recently, and though I may be crazy for thinking so, I feel like I could be with her again. Against all odds, and in the face of impossibility.

Now, I am faced with the challenge of trying to regain the greatest woman I have ever known. The ghosts surely come back, reeling in her, now. I never wanted it to end, I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, and I wanted to love her. Tomorrow leads my way, and I'm coming back waltzing into her head.

As you can see, The old way I saw the song doesn't mean much to me in light of my new circumstances. This was our song, and though the specifics may change, as my relationship (or lack thereof) with her will change, and this song is forever tied to Mayra, at the heart, it will always mean the same thing. It will mean everything.

Wish me luck.

i am pritty sure this song is about Daves brain and the psychological problems hes had in his life because of the line "Me
All at once the ghosts come back
Reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
Remember when I used to play for
All of the loneliness that nobody
Notice now" i think hes trying to say he used to play because he flet empty "the ghost" may be refering all the deaths he has delt with in his life. this is my interitation you dont have to agree with it but dave says himself he dosnt writhe his songs with meaning its for you to make your own interitation.

Dave dated a girl for the longest time before Ashley Harper.... he wanted to marry her but she was always rejecting him (WHY????)... I think it about thier realtionship, and how he had to move on but he wasn't leaving without letting her know how he felt, and that he tried, and this with haunt her in the end (i am sure it did) who would ever leave Dave!!! crazy girl! love him love him love him R.I.P leRoi

To start off, about 3 years ago, ask me to listen to dave matthews and i would have laughed in your face. Now it seems I am the one laughing. I never appreciated how great of a group they truly are. THE BEST!!!!!!

Ok, this is by far my favorite song. The lyrics, melody, tone, etc.. Perfect. This is the song that made me want to listen to Dave. It takes me to a place where I can just relax and look at life (corny I know lol).. This song gives me chills everytime I hear it... I listended to a live version of it about 10 min. ago and heard LeRoi tearing it up on the sax.. very sad he is gone, but his legend will never be forgotten.

Best Wishes everyone

This song is just so soothing and relaxing to listen to . .I feel myself drifting away from reality by the notes and keys played throughout the song . .it's beautiful..

As for it's meaning, to me it's about a him trying to convince or maybe even dare/challenge this person, whom he wants to fall in love with to enter the "game of love", I love the dancing reference he uses in the lyrics as it reminds me of the phrase "It takes two to tango" and basically he's asking if she'd like to try him out in a relationship and see if it could work out into something special, meaningful and loving.

My favourite verse would have to be the last couple of lines, he sings

"I came in praying for you
why wont you run
In the rain and play
Let the tears splash all over you "

Just curious if anyone ever considered the syntax with "Say Goodbye"? Beyond being one of the best transitions on a studio album since the B-Side of Abbey Road, it might also lend itself to understanding this song. To me, the two together have always stood for a breakup and brief reconciliation... very bittersweet, but that's life.

I have my own opinion as to what this song means. I also take some lyrics from the live versions to show what they mean more, and some I think are different than what is posted above, so I just write what I think he's singing.

I assumed this song was about a pain shared between him and someone he loved, a death, a fight, something like that. That's what this song means to me:

Come and see, I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
(I'm trying to forget the pain we've felt, I'm not perfect but I'm trying to get better.)

Do you wish a dance and while I'm in the front my playing time is won. Oh but the difficulty's coming here.
(Do you want to be like me and try to move on, as you can see I am moving on. Only more pain will be coming to you.)

I will go in this way, and find my own way out. I won't tell you what to be, but I'm coming to much more.
(I will fix my own problems. I won't tell you to be like me, but I'm getting better.)

Me, come now that ghosts come back, reeling in you now. What if they came down crushing?
(You are only going to keep remembering me. What if these memories are too painful?)

In the wake, we used to play for all the loneliness that nobody notices now. Begging slow, I'm coming here.
(Remember now, we used to just ignore all the pain that no one else can see. I'm coming very slowly, but I'm coming to help you.)

Only waiting, I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you.
(I am willing to wait for you, I wish we could have stayed happy, I wish I could have just loved you with no pain.)

I'm only this far, and only tomorrow leads the way. I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head.
(I've only come this far, but only the future leads the way. I am coming back into your life now.)

Please, I wouldn't pass this by, I wouldn't take any more than what sort of man goes by. I will bring water.
(I won't just let you go that easily, I won't just be like other people and leave you here. I will help you.)

Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder. I came in praying for you.
(Why can't you just forget the pain, I'm happy, it will all just go away. I came here just trying to help you.)

Why won't you run into the rain and play, and let tears splash all over you.
(Why don't you just let go of the pain and be happy again, let it become part of you, but no longer controlling you.)

okay this is gunna come to an end here.. this song is about facing a difficult relationship and fearing that it might end.. reguardless of who ends it. i just know this cause i listen to this song as some kind of guide whenever my boyfriend and i are having problems.

" why wont you ever be glad, it melts into wonder, i came in praying for you "

thats about fearing that his/her spouse isnt happy with them, and all he/she can do is pray that the stress of it all can just stop.

if it was about work why would the song come to "i wanted to love you" with so much climax?

and does anyone else hear a sound similar to a cell phone ringing before "it melts into wonder"? or is that just my verison?

The GREAT thing with DMB is that every song can fit to everyone for its own meaning.
I had some different views about this song...thought always that it was a love song.
Cause he sings so mellow and the song just moves you like you are being reliefed from this world.
My mind just floats away and everything feels so good and calm.

Now to the point.
After reading many opinions about this song, I came to a weird conclusion, my 26 meaning of this song, hehe.

I heard long time ago that this song had something with his accociate to do, what if this song is about Dave and his love for music or visa versa, how music loves him?

Musics soul talks to Dave:

Come and see
I swear by now I'm playing time
I against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
(dave should see that his songs have increased(slow but speeding) in popularity but he doesnt see it,and that they are popular,he cant give up now)
Do you wish a dance and while I'm
In the front
The play on time is won
(does he want to take a last dance even though he knows that he has succeded)
But the difficulty is coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you to stay
But I'm coming to much more
Me
All at once the ghosts come back
Reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
Remember when I used to play for
All of the loneliness that nobody
Notice now
I'm begging slow I'm coming here
Only waiting I wanted to stay
I wanted to play
I wanted to love you
(Musics soul inside him tells him that music and his passion will always exist even though he might want to quit.Someone else will play it if he wont,it will find a way out.It wont decide for him,he will. How musics soul helped him when he played alone in the beggining, and that he has forgotton that.Music wants to be played by dave cause he "plays" with it,it wants to be loved again.

I'm only this far
And only tomorrow leads my way
(it has come this far in his life...and tomorrow he will decide)

I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please, I wouldnt pass this by
I would take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why wont you ever be glad
It melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
why wont you run
In the rain and play
Let the tears splash all over you
(the day after Dave decided again to play..and the musics soul found its way into his heart/head again.Water is reveiving. His subconciousness was telling him to be glad for what he has and that he should listen to his feeling not what others say or do,like his accociate.

It all went from fun to a trouble, and dave lost his passion for music then he found it again coz thats something noone can take away from him.

Call me crazy....but after reading all opinions how it could have connections with his acciciate and still having word like "love" in it, well here it is..heehe.

But still I like to think that is a love song though:D

This song is so beautiful.

I could not tell anybody what it's about, but there is a certain feeling I get when I listen to it. I agree with mmbpaddock, completely.

The most beautiful thing about this song is that, whether it was initially written about an argument or a business colleague or the police, it can mean something completely different to hundreds of people; it's supposed to! That's what's so wonderful about music in general, and especially DMB.

I love this song.

Everytime i hear this song i get completely into it, one of the reasons why i love DMB, Their music completely embraces you. While i agree that the Luther College version is good, i have to say, that Golden Gate Park, 2004,(live trax 2) is fucking AMAZING. at the end he added a small verse of Everyday in it and you can hear the audience. love it.

very touching...for fans this is a must learn if u play guitar...the intro is difficult but the verses and chorus are quite learnable....classic dave rythym with the baseline tap...

"used to be...that you and me...play for all the lonliness that nobody notices now"

definitely about how his life has changed since becoming famous...artist make their best music in times of strong emotional states...also it has to do with a business argument with someone he was close with

dmb and bela fleck version where they infuse the song from their album left of cool during the jam out is beyond describable

This is the kind of song that has a meaning that eludes you until you find yourself in a certain emotional place, and you listen to the song, and it's meaning becomes clear. I can't explalin the song, but I know that I listened to it once after experiencing a huge professional disappointment, and the song really made sense. I think a lot of DMB's songs are like this; they're almost more an abstract expression of emotion.
