Lyrics for #41 as interpreted by Demau Senae

#41 Lyrics
Come and see,
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
Oh, but the difficulty's coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you what to be
But I'm coming to much more
Of Me

All at once the ghosts come back reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
In the way I used to play for
All the love and loneliness
That nobody notices now
Oh, begging slow I'm coming here

I'll be waiting
I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you
I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads the way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please

I wouldn't pass this by
Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run into the rain and play
Let it just splash all over you

i wish i knew what this song was really about. i believe that it's about the time that he spends on the road and how he longs to be w/ his loved one. but yet when they are together, she isn't happy. this is a beautiful song and i truly doubt that he wrote about a business colleague, but who knows.

I think the saying that he would love to go back to how it use to be. Playing for himself and no one else. Now that he's famous, he can't play for just himself, he has to play for everyone else...like he says, "Remember when I used to play for All of the loneliness that nobody
Notice now." He doesn't like the extras that go along with the fame he has now. (If that makes sense, lol.)

Dave wrote this one about arguing with a close business associate.

it's a breakup song. the beginning is saying, 'come in, sit down, there's something i need to say.' then, 'i've put this off long enough, i wish things could work out like i dreamed they would, but the ghosts of our past are too haunting on us.' the end is bittersweet saying, 'i'm sorry i couldn' tbe the man you wanted me to be, you deserve better than this, go be free, play in the rain and let your tears bring you refreshment.' (this is the easiest dave song to learn on guitar, btw.

okay boys and girls... we can't argue the meaning of a specific song like this. has it occoured to you that there is a possibility that this sublime song isin't dedicated to just one topic, but a whole host of worries on dave's mind during the song's creation. maby this can explain both the chashing lyrics wich refer to what seem to be several different topics, and everybodys different thoughts as to what the song is about. Let's not take to much time to go into what this song is about, but instead try to feel what the author was feeling... and take all aspects of the song into concideration.

yeah, good call alejio. i don't think dave wrote these songs so people could get argue about their meanings with one another and get offended about it. i think it's kinda cool that people just post their opinions..you never know, their opinion of a lyric might make better sense or change your perspective....

Actually, I attended one of his concerts in 2001, and he said himself it was about his run in with the police, it was originally going to be called "41 police" but the title was changed.

All the interpretations you guys have suggested, I've heard at least once from a number of sources. Honestly, I don't know what this song is about, but I kind of prefer it that way. The way I see it, the unknown element just adds to what makes this song so amazing and makes it speak to people on such a personal level. But if I had to pick a favorite DMB song - and I'd definitely be hard-pressed to do so - this just might be it. Lyrically, musically, emotionally, it just doesn't get much better than this.

this song..no matter what the meaning..is beautiful. The way he starts singing around the "im only this far..." part just makes you feel the emotion. A man could not write a song this beautiful about his boss. I just dont see it.

I love this song...

Anyway, yeah, I also heard it was about an argument with a business associate... why's that such a stupid idea? It's about how he used to play for himself and his emotions, and then suddenly there's all this fame and publicity and... other stuff, and it almost doesn't seem like he's playing for himself and his love of the music anymore. And he wants to go his own way and play for what he started playing for. It's about change, mostly, and how some things shouldn't change. That's how I see it, anyway.

My favorite! This and Grey Street have a tie :) My favorite version is the one on Live at Luther College. It gives me goosebumps. When I first heard it I almost cried. It is great. By far the best he has written.

This is my favorite song of all time. I heard it first going up skiing and ever since it is my music before I hit the slopes. I had no idea what it is about, but I like to think that it is about going out on your own and not conforming to society. He says "I will go in this way
And find my own way out ...I am only this far and only tomorrow leads my way" This means to me that he is going out on his own to face the world and there is so much hope for him. He is telling his girl that she can come if she wants but he realizes that there is not much time and he needs to do this now. Also download the version he does at Duke when he performed it for the first time. It is different but excellent!
