@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
I need an easy friend
I do, with an ear to lend
I do think you fit this shoe
I do, but you have a clue
I'll take advantage while
You hang me out to dry
But I can't see you every night
Free (I do, I do)
I'm standing in your line
I do hope you have the time
I do pick a number too
I do keep a date with you
I'll take advantage while
You hang me out to dry
But I can't see you every night
Free
I need an easy friend
I do, with an ear to lend
I do think you fit this shoe
I do, but you have a clue
I'll take advantage while
You hang me out to dry
But I can't see you every night
No, I can't see you every night
Free
I do

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
i think this song is about a girl
wow i didnt realise
lol
Hahah!
wow amazing observation!
@skater no shit
Most of the above is correct, but some of the things being presented as opposing possibilities are actually both true. The song was written about Tracy Marander, and thier relationship was going downhill at the time. One of the main problems for them was her insisting that Cobain find a better job and make more money, and the thought that her greed was ruining thier relationship. In this situation, she started asking him why he hadn't written a song about her ,and this was the result.
@pentalarc I actually know Tracy Marander. She works at the Public Lacy Library near Olympia, Washington. She doesn't like to talk about Kurt, though. Probably because his death made her upset.
its about his girlfriend tracey who threatened to kick him out of her apartment if he didnt get a real job. she complained that he wrote songs about jerking off but not about her, so to make her happy he wrote this. problem is it totally makes her sound bad instead of being a love song
but i cant see you every night free = shes literally making him pay to be her boyfriend. hes gotta get a job or he cant be with her every night
It's a love song written for his then girlfriend Tracy Marander.
yeh. he wrote this song after she complained that he never wrote songs about her.
ofcourse its about tracy, everyone knows that. and hes NOT insinuating that tracy is a hooker, she was threatening to kick him out because he didnt have a job and she was supporting the both of them thats how the "for free" line came in
This song means that he needs something (a relationship) easy not hard; someone to listen and hang out; he thinks he has found someone that meets the criteria but does she even have a clue of that?
He plans to take advantage while she 'hangs him out to dry' or abandons him by doing him; but he can't be with anyone every night because hooking up has a price--the price being that the girl will eventually fall in love.
He finally wants to do right by the girl and ask her on a date and he realizes that many would love to date her so he is simply saying, I know you are a special person and I want to do right by you.
Then he goes back to restating what he wants and the fact that she fits the shoe.
Regardless of whether or not this was about someone he actually knew I don't know...not a huge fan just heard the song and wanted to interpret. I don't think it matters either way because people should interpret it in a manner that has meaning in their own life. Music, like poetry, is open to interpretation; I am simply sharing what the words put together mean.
I couldn't agree more, but i think that when he says he "But I can't see you every night
Free" refers that she dosen't have (or want/bother to have) time for him.
This song might be to Kurt's old girlfriend Tracy. It was written when they were going through their tough times. It says more in his biography "Heavier than Heaven"
This song's about Kurt's old girlfriend Stacey, who threatened to throw Kurt out if he didn't get a job and hold it.
TRACI MARANDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With all respect, I think to properly understand this song, and any great work, one has to pull one's self away from the love of the artist and knowledge of their personal trivia. Let the song stand for itself. It is a terrific piece of minimalist poetry with its own meaning that will endure long after Kurt Cobain’s personal history and relationships are forgotten.
I don’t know anything about “Tracy” and certainly did not know Kurt personally and so would not suggest either was actually involved in prostitution. The greatest artists are not that self-centered and write, instead, of the tragedy they see and feel in the lives of others around them.
I hear this song as a dark, disturbing “Roxanne”. It is the story of a very lonely man who has fallen in love with a hooker. She treats him as a friend when they are together and listens indulgently just as a good professional should. She probably does have a “clue” of his feelings for her but she does not want to acknowledge that because she does not feel the same.
“Take advantage while… you hang me out to dry” a bitter complaint that the relationship is one-sided.
“I’m standing in your line. I hope you have the time. I take a number, too.” Like every other customer waiting for his number to be called at the meat market, this man is waiting his turn with the object of his affections. That he has to take a number and wait like everyone else reveals the tragic awareness that he is just another “John” to her.
And, because of her professional view of him, because she does not love him the way he loves her, he can’t have her every night for free… only when he pays.
The repeated, plaintiff refrain, “I do”, is a sad reference to one half of a wedding vow.
Damn good music!
@CompleteNirvana Her name was actually Tracy. not Stacey.

It is supposedly about his old g-friend Tracy, she did threaten to throw him out. He never said who it was about publically, but one of his spokesmen told Tracy it was about her.
skater was being sarcastic people... if yu cant see the humor, then you probly shouldnt be judging what artists ment in their songs... and all you people that try and make it sound like the song writer told you personlay what it was, say you read it online or its what you think it is. remember the only person that definetly knows what the songs mean is the person that wrote them.
