Early the next morning they receive a call to say that their relative has died.

To me, there seems to be a lot of religious imagery, particularly references to the heavens. I've always wondered if there was a secondary meaning about the author finding God later in life and wishing he'd done so sooner.

I think this song means the opposite of what it says since I can't imagine Stereolab actually believing "how sweet it is to obey." I think it's saying that religions/ideologies and their "wise and worthy guides" (preachers/teachers/philosophers) relieve adherents from the "heavy burden responsibility" for finding what life means for themselves or what is true on an individual level. This relief seems like wisdom, and it feels easy to follow their teaching instead of finding our own individual truth or way-of-being which is so much more difficult to find....
