The song is about a guy and girl in a relationship that includes group sex/sharing.

The guy is conflicted, but keeps going back to it. Each time he sees his girl with other guys during an orgy or whatever, he kind of likes it but is jealous at the same time.

It’s the same theme as Hendrix - Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire.

Read the lyrics that way and it all makes sense.

Jealous again, thought it time I let you in. He’s telling her how he feels conflicted

A song about an elderly person dying.

At the start of the song we are given a portrayal of an ageing man's life: they feel they have nothing more to give, no purpose and have lost touch with loved ones. There is a dull inevitability to the passing of time.

The lyrics speak of a ruthless attitude towards those who are weak and cowardly, with a clear sense of domination and power. The song features Paleface Swiss as well.

To me, there seems to be a lot of religious imagery, particularly references to the heavens. I've always wondered if there was a secondary meaning about the author finding God later in life and wishing he'd done so sooner.

I think this song means the opposite of what it says since I can't imagine Stereolab actually believing "how sweet it is to obey." I think it's saying that religions/ideologies and their "wise and worthy guides" (preachers/teachers/philosophers) relieve adherents from the "heavy burden responsibility" for finding what life means for themselves or what is true on an individual level. This relief seems like wisdom, and it feels easy to follow their teaching instead of finding our own individual truth or way-of-being which is so much more difficult to find....

It's about the the paradox of wanting. His desire drives him and, in the end, consumes all he'd hoped to gain. Nothing remains, but the desire itself.

"I brought my heart to feed, but my mouth was fire" One seeks to fill the soul, and the heart, but the "mouth on fire" (desire) is all consuming and leaves nothing for the body. When all is finished: all hopes and dreams remain as they were from the beginning. A chasing after the wind (Ecclesiastes).

John the Evangelist was a fighter, he was the only one who defended Jesus when authorities came to arrest him.

So he both prays for people and kills them. A warrior monk, if you will.

Based on what I’ve read about her, she suffered childhood trauma including SA & also suffers from depression as an adult. She’s also on the autism spectrum. That’s a whole lot of pain.

The bit about putting on her armour & also shedding tears behind sunglasses shows that she’s putting on a brave face in public.
