hey. i'm also in recovery and appreciate your reading of this. although, i'm not sure that anthony kiedis is speaking from the vantage point you're describing. i think there is a lot of uncertainty...i feel like it is just a little more melancholic. i don't know if he has done a second step...maybe just the beginning of the first...if that makes sense. peace of mind is still out of reach...but he strives to attain it. i just don't know if "baby" is a higher power or just another manifestation of his disease by trying to use a relationship or a geographical cure (mexico) to help him out. |

i love how the chorus can be read from both perspectives of the relationship and mean different things. in the case of the male singer, it means that she is simply not enough for him to commit fully to. and from the female, it's the acknowledgment that he does not have the same feelings for her as she does for him. it's the two sides of looking at any failure to connect completely. one seeks love from the person who cannot fully love and knows and expects the disappointment but remains "in sadness" with them. |

i definitely think the 'you' is the ex, and the 'she' is the new girl he settled for as someone previously mentioned. he's still not over the ex and this song is about his hope that maybe they could be good for each other soon...if she's made changes. "when you think you've sinned, do you fall upon your knees?" like...do you finally see what you did wrong. but he doesn't want to be unfaithful. and there's safety in the new relationship, even if he didn't go into it with a clear heart...and he is trying to stop himself from talking to her because maybe it's too far gone. they broke up for a reason. maybe he has a selective memory suddenly. the grass is always greener. but. he ends it with still so much uncertainty. it is obviously not over between them. he is essentially in charge of his own happiness, but he doesn't believe it. the scandal continues. and he still can't take his mind off her even after finding someone new. |

this song is about jealousy and paranoia. it doesn't have to mean that the girl is actually unfaithful... i think he's trying to reason with the fact that jealousy is destroying the love. i think "you're so pretty in white. pretty when you're faithful." is him reassuring himself how good it is when he isn't plagued by jealous worries. he's trying to combat his jealous nature.
so i think inflatable means like a floatie. a lifesaver. they both were falling apart, but his love for her makes a lifesaver, for the both of them. hope will keep him afloat. |

see, now i think this is about a relationship that has been unsteady for a while. but having hope that it might work out the next time, and the whole paycheck bit is just in reference of how they need to work for their love to work, but he doesn't want to chance it with someone new altogether because he thinks what they have is worth the extra effort. i think it might be after a while apart, and how it finally dawns on him that she is the one for him. or vice versa since much of the song is written in the girl's quotations. |

originally, i was trying to say that this song meant maynard in fact went religious in a christian focused kind of way. once it came to my knowledge that it was about his mother's 27 years suffering paralysis and then her death that followed, i totally understand his approach here. i was raised in a catholic environment but at a young age, i turned away from organized religion and tried to figure out what was most important for me to believe. but when my father died when i was 16, i said he was in heaven. i prayed to god that he was in peace. i reverted back to all those organized thoughts because in crisis, that's basically what we have to do. i totally agree 0ni. no one can say what happens after death, but in order to give ourselves peace, it's perhaps easiest to just use that comfortable idea that heaven goes to those who lived remarkable lives. it's a beautiful, beautiful song. and i hope all who were skeptical about the internet leaks and such are enjoying the album they got to purchase today. |

my boyfriend put part of this song in his profile. the part that goes 'we will never die. beside you in time.' initially, i thought it meant that we will never die, BESIDES you in time. and i was rather insulted. haha, but upon really listening to the lyrics, i really applied it to our current situation. he has been overcoming addiction during which he wasn't really connecting with me and really there for me anymore. but i was still there. parallel places. so he is trying not to stay...regarding his addiction. and as he undergoes recovery, it has been so hard and really taking every bit of him to do, he fades in a way. he still is at this distance. but he knows that together, we will never die. we have this bond. and he will be beside me in time. happy again. it is a song of hope.
i just saw nine inch nails on 3/10 at the mullins center. my second time but this time i had general admission, and they are are an amazing fuckin band and put on a great live performance. they played this beautifullyyy. |
