Whether live or recorded, this song is fantastic. And of course it's anti-American. The line "Who run into the arms of America" prove this. Clearly these women and children are not running into the military arms of America. I was particularly impressed with how Bono turned it round to get at America's domestic policy as well as foreign policy on the Elevation tour. I've had a problem with the gun laws in America for quite a while but the images of the little girl holding a gun made me feel physically sick. And whoever that guy is who said "There are no good guns, there are no bad guns. A gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. A gun in the hands of a good man is no threat to anyone but bad people." He's an idiot. So that little girl is a bad person? I think not. |

This is my absolute favourite song of all time. The intro is fabulous, and it never fails to put a smile on my face on bad days. I think this song may be about heaven, but the world peace idea is also great. It's so amazing when its performed live, the version on 'Elevation 2001' dvd is fantastic. I have to see this band live. |

I LOVE this song. I've always said there isn't enough insight into Judas Iscariot, and it always seems that he is overlooked by Christians. But the way I see it is, Jesus was destined to die, and one of those poor disciples had to betray him, unfortunatly for him, Judas was the unlucky one. This song is probably the only song that gives an effective insight into Judas. And I must admit, its a pretty believeable conversation, maybe just a little more...poetic. But Bono has a fantastic way with words and this song only goes to prove it. My favourite line from this song is 'In the garden I was playing the tart, I kissed your lips and broke your heart.' |

Whoever thinks this is not the most spiritual of songs is mistaken I'm afraid. Taken from "Walk on - the spiritual journey of U2" by Steve Stockman. "Beautiful Day was an interesting opening track for All that you cant leave behind. The last track on U2's nineties catalog, as the entire world seemed caught up in a frenzy of apocalyptic doom and gloom, fearful about the ending of a millennium, was "Wake up dead man". It was as though Jesus was in the tomb after his cruxifixion, lifeless, with the disciples letting go of all hope. John Lennon's words "the dream is over" come to mind. "Beautiful Day" is like an ecstatic proclamation that Peter and James might have sung just after Mary had come back to the disciples' hiding place with the resurrection news. The biblical image used may be the dove going out from the ark to bring back the leaf that informed Noah that the old world had ended and a new one could begin. But even that depicts the whole celebratory mood of dead man waking up and a whole new Kingdom being birthed. The album and the Elevation tour would see a new resurrection shuffle of mood in the U2 camp." I couldn't agree more! |

Ok, being a U2 fanatic, for my birthday I was given a U2 book called "Walk on - The spiritual journey of U2." If anyone has ever wondered where their inspiration comes from I would recommend it. Here's a direct quote from the book written by Steve Stockman: "Even with or without you is not a plain-sailing love song. There are moments when it appears that it is focusing on the old cliche "Women, you can't live with them, and you can't live without them". But the lyrics twist and turn and deal with a whole lot more than a relationship between men and women. Weaving two or three themes into one song is another trait of U2's song writing. Niall Stokes, in his song-by-song account of the bands entire back catalog, is accurate when he sees erotic love and agape love mixing around here, also another great U2 theme of surrendering the ego in the lyrics 'give yourself away' (Luke 9:24). Of course, a person does give himself away in love and marriage, but this kind of surrender could be spiritual or even in opening up to hundreds of thousands of fans everynight." |
