I thought that this song was sung um... tongue in cheek. Because if she genuinely likes this person... why wouldn't she mind racing through their goodbyes? And who wants to WASTE the best years of their life? Not many people offering that up. Winter is usually a time of death as well... so I saw this song as her being upset and saying "oh sure, go ahead and waste my life, I don't mind." ... when of course, she does. The person that this song is about is an asshole and wants to "keep her down" but when the relationship ends, she'll race through their goodbyes (he's been racing through their lives trying to find some sort of meaning) and I highly doubt she'll look back. |

I caught a religious element as well. I saw the sunlight as those old paintings of saints, with the halo looking like the sun shining behind their heads. I see sarcasm... she is telling, well, Jesus/Christians that whatever they found in sunlight (God) is just dandy, go ahead, pray for those who have left Christianity, but they still think that everything good is for them ("pretend all the good things are for you") and maybe even for her (I'm assuming that here she means someone specific who desperately wants to think that she takes part in that sunshine), but the weather (sunshine) changes not even halfway between their house (church) and hers. |

"Maybe I could open you up" -- definitely means sex. Later he changes it to "maybe you could open up to me" which is the emotional/mental part of a relationship. She is scared to open up to him (perhaps she knows that the first part of his attraction to her is physical and not emotional, so she tells him that she wants to be alone). He was scared as well, which is why it was easier to hide the truth. And now he's realizing that he won't be able to get her at all, physically or emotionally.
But the main thing I wanted to comment is that while I don't know much about music, whatever it is, guitar I guess, sounds like moaning, which also adds to the fact that he wants to be "sharing the same bed."
This song, then, is about the gulf separating two people when they only connect physically ("we do all the things that lovers do"). |

Right now I'm leaning towards the killer saying the last part -- He knows that "Seven (God) loved you so much."
But he's asking Katie not to reply because he can't handle the pain (which he can dish out, but cannot take). Katie's reply, possibly, could be his sentencing (her reply being in the form of a verdict). This would also lend to this part being repeated 12 times to mean the jury. Her reply could also (less supported by the lyrics) be in the form of nightmares or even at his own death, seeing her again and her telling him what a horrible thing he did.
I really do like the explanation about him idolizing her into his own bride. A little creepy, as she was only seven, but very plausible. |

I feel sorry for the people who think this song is about his girlfriend. If that were so, he's got a lot coming to him when she disappoints him. And so the people who think this song is about another person, they're going to be disappointed when they don't find true fulfillment (that this song is about) in their relationships with people.
What he means by asking God to take him in and to take him deeper, is that God doesn't need us. God doesn't have to care about us, He doesn't have to love us. But the truth is, God does. He even wants us to be happy. If you don't believe in God, imagine what it is to worship, to be consumed by someone. When you devote your life to this person (say a girlfriend or boyfriend, or perhaps a spouse or just a lover, since this song is supposedly about that type of relationship), you want to be around him or her all the time. You want to know that person intimately. Well, that's what this line means -- he wants to know God more, he wants God to 'let him in' so to speak. He doesn't want the walls that people put up to guard themselves. He wants God, as He is, pure and unadultered. This can only be obtained through God's will and through a deep and intimate relationship. He will no longer settle for a dead version of the living God. This is the way to be happy.
This is the way that things are the best -- "how could it be any better than this?" |

drinking doesn't make you a bad person. nothing you do can make you a bad person.....because there are many people who haven't done anything but are still 'bad' people and then there are people who HAVE done things but -aren't- bad people. i'm not here to judge you.
as for Christians who drink...."wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray be them is not wise" proverbs 20:1. "woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine...they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of his hands" isaiah 5:11-12. lastly, Ephesians 5:18 "do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. instead, be filled with the Spirit."
so i think that's ample room to say that getting drunk is bad. as Christians, we need to live as examples. if non believers see us drinking and living just as they do, why would they want to become a Christian? after all, what's the difference........ |

the liquid diet prolly IS alcohol (dulling to the senses and crude), but it's possible that it's not -- when you're sick or you don't feel well, you don't really eat solid food. and don't you feel dull when you don't eat food? and liquids are kinda crude.. i mean, if you're living off water or juice or chicken soup, it's not exactly refined.
"but it will do" -- that makes me kinda think it's not alcohol, because you can't live off of it..and he's a Christian, so..yeah. i dunno.. being drunk all the time doesn't do. |

isn't it funny how everyone is so different...yet everyone can relate to this, one song?
my story is a bit different.. because my ex and i don't talk, nor do we want to... we don't want anything to do with each other...but.. i think, if one day, we just.. met on the street, we'd use those lies.. if we saw each other on a regular basis, we'd use those lines..
