To me, this song is all about emptiness and escape. At one point, he had a real relationship, and he is remembering her. "I heard your voice through a photograph." ..."she wants to know am I still a slut." He was unable to stay in the relationship, maybe because he was a slut, and now he has some scarlet starlet in his bed, his ash trays full, and he's spilling his guts (vomiting.) He feels so empty that he is considering suicide. "A candidate for a soul mate bled"... he keeps killing his chances for something real. |

i completely agree with you Revolutionary. sometimes ill look at one of their songs from one angle and itll make perfect sense. then i'll go 180 and look at it from the opposite perspective and it still makes perfect sense.
i think it's really spiffy that there's a band that we can all relate to.
the only thing i hate about soad becoming so popular is that you have to compete against the mob to see them. i saw them live last month and i was nearly stomped to death by the crowd. it wasnt even really about the music, it was just everybody trying to get to the front.
its like that saying "beware of people in large numbers" because ppl can be smart as individuals, but once u get them all together it's just a mass of idiots. |

it seems like on almost every single page ive been on theres somebody arguing and somebody else saying, "dont argue. ur supposed to say what this song means to you."
personally, i think it's more fun when theres an actual discussion/debate goin on. because in reality, nobody really cares about your opinion unless theyre disagreeing with you. |

a politican is someone who is actively engaged in politics, and from what rage fan posted, no one can say that there was no action behind their words.
not only has ratm made me more politically aware, but they have inspired me to start doing social justice work in my community.
i think u brought up some really good points PJ10, but u should look more into who ur lecturing before you point your finger at them. ya...but power to ya with the hunger thing :)
any moron can be ballsy, but it takes a lot more to practice what you preach. |

RATM arent entertainers, they're politicians (well atleast they were until they split...uh hem) Entertainment is a crucial part of American culture and a dependancy for many Americans. We need it to ignore the internal problems that are tearing down our country. Injustice disappears if you just turn up the TV. Since our country revolves around this selfish culture, what better way to wake people up than to get inside their radios? |

Being a teenager is probably the lonliest time in a person's life. It's just after you've lost your innocence and ignorance and just before you grow up, sell out, give up your ideals and give in to society. Everything is in question. You can either have the ignorance of childhood or the ignorance of adulthood, but you can't keep that reality inbetween without selling your soul on the way. You want to love and live for something greater, but it's a long hard road out of hell. Very few make it out. |

I don't think this song has to do with just religion or relationships but the schisms within all of humanity...lovers and brothers alike...even within one's self. We see that the pieces fit when our souls are juxtaposed (laid side by side), but something happens- perhaps for the same reason that we were originally separated- and we can not unite.

Definitely sounds like it has something to do with racial issues to me... or trying to break through mental boundries or walls of ignorance and see what's on the other side. He's reaching out to something that he can barely touch or fathom... trying to understand what makes us human and still being human at the same time. Yet, as he tries to explore with his spiritual senses, he gets lost in his physical mind.
This is an amazing song... I can't begin to understand all he's trying to say. |

Sounds like someone going back and forth within his own mind, knowing what's right but contradicting himself because of his hatred. Some lines of the song sound like he's repeating things that people have told him and its all running through his subconscious....

how can you call someone an idiot just because they don't share your opinion? When I was talking about the song being about drugs I wasn't talking about it in the literal sense. Opium as in "religion is the opiate of the masses." As you said, SOAD talks about religion in a lot of their songs.
I think this song is a call to Americans to wake up from our sleep and realize the disorder going on around us.

This is my first SOAD song. I heard it a couple years back and fell in love with them. They have so much to say... every time I listen to one of their songs I get something new out of it. Just trying to interpret their music is like putting a puzzle together. |

I think this song is an expression of his dissatisfaction with the way he lives. He is tired of letting society, culture or "the hive" drive his life. Now, he's taking the wheel into his own hands. Even if it means not being accepted by the hive or sacrificing a comfortable lifestyle, he wants to be the one in control of his life. |

I agree with RaVE but I also think this song is talking about how we use drugs to escape from the disorder in our lives. "Eating seeds as a past time activity"...opium, maybe? Whatever drugs we use whether we are workaholics, or internet addicts ("software 7.0"), or we use religion to put to sleep or silence the pain in our lives, disorder is still there.
What I don't get though is how the song ends on such an optomistic note..."When I became the sun I shone life into the man's hearts." |

Tom Joad is a character from The Grapes of Wrath (a great book about the Great Depression.) The book focuses on "man's inhumanity to man" and police brutality. Tom Joad ends up killing a cop after the cop kills his friend (the preacher who was waiting for the last to be first....)
This is a really eye-opening song. |
