The thing is is that nowhere in the song does it say that they are the last people alive. It appears that the earth is dying and they're also trying to escape oppressive policies (fed up with rules and regulations). So I can't agree with the idea that they're the last ones left. Also, even with a handful of people, you wouldn't stand much of a chance of extending the human race beyond about 45 or 6 generations due to inbreeding. | |

In my humble opinion, in terms of the lyrics, this is one of the most well written songs on Everything Now. The author is reflecting on the deep-set, seemingly irreconcilable problems within his relationship. Although their attitudes towards life and popular culture are different, they are drawn together by an ineffable, existential connection. Rather than feel love is achievable elsewhere, they have previously convinced each other that sustainable love is irreconcilable ("we don't deserve love") At the start of the song, the author is lost in a quagmire of popular culture. He seeks spiritual solace and fulfillment through television and music and is frustrated by his partner who sees little value in such things. The relationship, and the author's own self-awareness, leads to deep melancholy, which he tries to stem through alcohol and (possibly) drug use. As the song concludes, he realises that love isn't unachievable, it's simply the fact that his partner has deep-seated issues that she isn't prepared to acknowledge or resolve - "you tried to figure it out, you never figured it out". It appears his partners' parents were constantly arguing during her formative years, which leads her to think that relationships are forever irreconcilable. This is reinforced by her religious beliefs, whereupon Mary Magdalane fruitlessly pursues Christ. He concludes the song by encouraging her to realise the difference between fatalistic romanticism and a sustainable relationship and commit to what they have together; but we're treated to a sense that he suspects this may never happen. |

Eventually the old man stopped coming by (because he died), and therefore the singer felt remorseful, because the lie from earlier ("no one ever really dies") would have been comforting. Later in the song, we hear "Turns out what I figured out was I was wrong and you were right". What did the singer figure out? Perhaps this is just a vague hand-wavy line about conflict resolution, but on the contrary I think the singer decided that, despite his staunch agnosticism, there are advantages to believing little lies about the afterlife. |

The song has much deeper meaning especially if you are someone who believes in the coming kingdom of God. The first verse addresses the leaders of military juntas and corrupt democracies, the ones some call the 3rd world. The line "when the cat is away, the mice will play" carried the same meaning as the verse in the book of revelations that call Christ "the prince of the kings of this world". All men in political power work for Him but as He is away at the moment they just act the way they please, acting like animals. Like rats in a rat race; fighting,killing,oppressing. The second verse addresses the leaders of the so called developed world with their treaties and alliances and all the trappings the think guarantees their national security. The line "dont forget your history, know your destiny" is to remind them that all great and mighty empires of the past have fallen and if they will be honest with themselves their nations will fall too. It is far better to look forward and work for the coming kingdom of God that will last forever for "when they cry peace and safety a sudden destruction overtakes them" It is a very deep song pointing all men to things greater than themselves. |

| Heard this track again for the 1st time in years now re plussed on my spoty.. I've often wondered if the lyrics are to do with the Biblical narrative Saul's conversion (from the golden path) on the road to Damascus culminating with his astonishment and terror at his encounter with the risen christ at exactly 2.49 accompanied by angels in song, Saul (St Paul) is continually reminded and haunted in this section amidst the throng of agasp angels in praise, of Christs's suffering and the suffering of those Saul himself persecuted and how they suffered at his hands (the hard kind of bell toll at the beginning of each bar is a kind of give away that it is a divine encounter the way i hear it) . His voice being the only one left at the end suggests this is his second chance and the vision/event has passed. | |

I reckon the song could be about Albert Speer, Hitler's armaments minister. I keep coming back to this song throughout the years. The one verse that always get's me is 'You said tonight is a wonderful night to die I asked you how you could tell You told me to look at the sky Look at all those stars Look at how goddamn ugly the stars are' I have had moments where I have complemented suicide many times in my life, but as of recently I have found myself appreciating the little things. The stars, the trees, the ocean, etc. I always have appreciated these things, but I would find myself thinking things like 'it's a wonderful night to die'. Now I really how ridiculous that is! Once you're dead, everything that you found beautiful is gone. So now when I'm feeling depressed and have these thoughts my mind sarcastically repeats 'Look at how god damn ugly the stars are'. You may be so depressed that suicide seems like its the way out. It is not! Just like the sentiment of the song 'things will never be ok' and 'things will never work out right' you feel like this will always be the case, and from experience: a lot of the time it will be if you struggle with depression/anxiety/ptsd and so on. But life is a beautiful thing, find the simple things to make you happy, look at the beauty of the stars, the forest, the ocean etc, and realize that you want to stick around to experience all the little things that make life worth living. Our peers have a tendency to tear us down, hell for me even my parents did. Do yourself a favor and put all that shit on mute. You do you, we have one life to live, don't let anyone else ruin it for you. So go to school, go to work take a couple punches to the head, come home and look at those beautiful stars. I hope that someone someday will read this and think twice before ending their life. |

@[GregYan:22424] I agree. I am amazed at what some people come up with sometimes. The first response sounds like a response where that's what they want the song to be about, but I think it couldn't be more off base and is exactly the opposite. Religion, politics, law all create a lot of wrongs when you look at it pragmatically and keep emotion out of it. For example, partying, sexual deeds, etc. People do what they want and then are taught to punish themselves for it and others punish them for it. Is it really "wrong" because some one else tells you its wrong? Is it really wrong if it doesn't hurt anyone directly? I'm not answering that question, because I am not God, if there is one. Seems like it sometimes, but then again it seems like there isn't at others. But wait, It's simple, just have faith, right? Well, which religion do we choose from? Make the right choice, or you will be abominated. The abomination from others can cause the most pain and confusion for some. The right choice is learned or communicated by the people we are around. So, what's right may be different for a person living in the Middle East than it is for a person in the United States. But some people come up with their own religious beliefs for example regardless of where they live and go by them and are happy. My experience in life seems to have shown me that to a degree, the only way to avoid hurting people and pain and suffering is to keep your head down, your mouth shut and your eyes closed and turn your brain off and live a simple life. That doesn't come from religion, that comes from my experience. Catch is, that is much harder to do for some people than others, and that can be a biological/psychological/personality/soulful thing as much as anything else. To me these people are those who feel like "flightless birds" when living this simple life. These people are often creatives in a broad sense. They create new things that did not exist before, not just visual artists. I consider scientists creatives, not just musicians, to paint a picture. Without creatives, we would have no music and the world would be the same as it always was. I do belive, that those who feel like flightless birds must not believe in religion. I mean, how can you expect to go to Heaven if you go against your region? Take Christianity, make no question, there is Hell to pay as far as the Bible is concerned. But if you are an objective person, who is to say there is a Heaven? And who is to say living life like a "flightless bird" ins't hell on earth? But again, this is a mindf*ck that things like religion can create for an individual like that. What throws the entire song off in my opinion is where they speak of knowing good and evil. If you listen to the song "Heathens", you have to wonder if that song is personal to them. Well, I can answer that after watching an interview about it. IT IS. In fact, I would be surprised if he could put it any more clearly that this song 100% applies to them. Listen to the lyrics of THAT song, and you may be like me. What exactly do they define as good and evil? No judgement, it just seems a little hard to decipher any concrete message with that line thrown in there, because it seems that it was globally applied. |

This song to some extension relates to Ghost Story in that what did not kill just made me tougher. From Sting perspective he never wanted to live like his father. He wanted out. That to me appears to be at least the wound and his career the flower. When I hear this song I think of the mother with a child with a birth defect. As I was born with a birth defect, bilateral cleft lip and palate, I see much simile. I see the wound, I see the annoying birds and I see the flower The metaphor is profound. |

Ok, so I need to share this somewhere people might care. I used to love new pornos, but time went on and I forgot about them. Now I'm 29, and close enough to 30 to start having a little early 20s nostalgia...plus I am goin' through stuff. Mostly how accepting of my queerness I've become, and how most the people I keep around now are also queer which wasn't always the case. I am also having a hard time because a lot of my queer friends are going through something similar but different -- a loss of privildge they grew up assuming they were owed. I've constantly been someone's shoulder to cry one, because the assumption seems to be that my internal fortitude means I've not experienced trauma at all, which of course is far from the truth. I was grappling with this when the lines "the vantage falling from the ivory tower/I tried of imagine it/ I couldn't imagine it" I looked up the song, and realized what I once thought was contentless pretty words was actually a message that applied to my life directly. He counted on his own private Altamont --- a reference to a music festival that erupted into chaos. ie he counted on his life to be chaos, that was all he could really trust. He recognized his life was "stacked crooked all along" --- unfair or stacked against him, and knowing that gave him a kind of freedom and strength. In the chorus, talking about other people's feelings that he tries to imagine sharing but can't quite find that place of empathy. I'm not entirely clear what the "red light of the hours" might mean, but "the vantage falling from the ivory tower" is very clear imagery of someone losing some privilege, a feeling someone who's always felt life was stacked against them might never have. The tone suggests some gratitude, but also a longing to understand. The second verse talks delves into a relationship where he preforms a great deal of emotional labor. Untangling someone else's drama, likely thanks to dashed expectations, and rings out a little annoyed that every little thing this lover went through was just a big dramatic deal. Still the drama of romance is just part of a hard life, no big deal. Finally in the last verse he laments what he's been denied. It's actually pretty straightforward, don't deny I have also suffered, don't deny that I have weaknesses, don't deny how careful I've actually had to be this whole time although I've kept my cool. Most of all though, you better the hell let me click my heels together and say "there's no place like home". My expectations have always been realistic or less, so it follows I'm the kind of person who doesn't glamorize the past either, that doesn't mean I don't want to escape to the same fictitious "simpler time" you've been able to manufacture. For me maybe, there's no place like a new pornographer's concert in 2009. |

| The peacock is the biggest clue, because this song works perfectly as a dialogue for the Yazidi myth about the Peacock angel (Satan). It's very similar to the Judeo-Christian-Islam myth about the Garden of Eden with a few changes. When God makes man, he asks all of the angels to bow down to the creature he made in his image. Satan being a being of fire and light refused saying he would never bow down to a creature of clay. Satan was cast down from heaven, later passing on the fire of heaven to man (I stole the power form the sun.) It's this flame that let man be like God and gain knoweldge about all around him. It's his consciousness that caused God to kick man out of the Garden of Eden. So it's a mix of a curse and a blessing. Yazidis later have Satan reconcile with God and becomes a hero for mankind. But you can take this story as a conversation between Satan and man at that moment he passed the flame having been cast down from the heavens. | |
